Keep in mind that these guitar models will vary in sound from unit to unit, not just from maker to maker. All will not sound the same. And, not each is played EXACTLY the same way here in this video. Here's an interesting experiment: load the vid, play the HD at 00:43, play the Coll at 2:20, then play the SC at 3:37....you will hear an open strum that might give you a clearer example of the tone from the woods. AGAIN....not each strum is the same. My ears hear the score: #1 SC, #2 Coll, #3 H&D.
@yumpladukfoo WAIT....after another listen...I score it COLLINGS #1, HD #2, and SC #3. The Collings had an inescapable allure to my ears as if it were telling a campfire story with 100% honesty. A power to the people type story. I effin loved it....gotsta buy one.
@yumpladukfoo THE SCORE HAS CHANGED....#1 COLLINGS, #2 SC, #3, H&D. If you listen carefully the H&D has way too much emptiness in the midrange and that will get worse later when the guitar opens up. The Collings had a nice balance now, but....the SC just might open up with more character in the long run. Which feels better in your hands? The Collings, or the SC? Now go buy it.
All three guitars had something to offer, but from my perspective, the Collings won the battle, decisively. It had the deepest, richest tone, the best note definition, the strongest harmonics in the chords, without incurring muddiness, or from sacrificing any strength in the fundamental by scooping the mid-range voicing, or by incorporating overbearing bass, such as often happens with a scalloped-braced forward-shifted Martin.
I listened with some very expensive headphones and pick the H&D by a wide margin second was the SC and third Collings.
I play Collings guitars, I really need to go look at these H&D guitars.

+1 on the Santa Cruz it sounded best to my ears, I bet it weighed a lot less than the other two as well.

H & D, then Collings, then SC. I like the character of the H & D personally.

I liked the Santa Cruz the best, but I thought they all sounded great. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

I would put the Collings D1A Varn 1st, the SCGC 1934 2nd and the H and D 3rd. What about the rest of you?
