I just love this - it's as good as it gets. Great singer, great song, and one of the best bands of all time. The dynamics and the build from 3:30 to 4:00 give me chills, it's so good. No Auto Tune in this house. :) Bravo.
She brought the house down on this one...by far the best peformance in the whole show! I'd give her a standing "o" just watching the video!!!! The Funk Bros. equally sound superb throughout! The sound is so crystal clear...
This is the absolute best rendition of this song ever...Joan sings with a passion of having been there and makes the lyrics not only words but emotions. Thanks Joan
thanks man for uploading good quality track was stuck with bad one like others was captivated by Joans version of this song since watching funk brothers thanks man
I saw this tour a few years back. I knew it may be the last chance to hear this constellation live, which doubled the emotion. The acoustics were not great in Berlin, but I was still blown away..This song was a highlight..For those who did not get the chance to see the Funk Brothers tour I recommend seeing the film " Standing in the Shadows of Motown " in a cinema with good sound system.I was impressed and highly entertained by that also.
God Joans voice cuts straight to the soul....truly one one of the greatest vocalists ever, have listened to this a thousand times and everytime goosebumps. By the way, what kind of troglodyte presses "dislike" for this video??? Really?!?!?!
Definitely one of the greatest versions of this tune, absolutely love her vocals!!!!
(She's attractive also not really the focus just wanted to acknowledge) The musical arrangement is actually awesome! Love the piano, excellent percussion section, the horns and strings.
The bass and drums steadily laying down the foundation of the groove! Just an awesome rendition. Absolutely love it.
Incredible! An all time great voice! The Funk Brothers are fantastic! They allow Joan to unleash that amazing voice. You can tell she feels this song. I never really paid attention to this song but Joan makes you feel the pain, the hopelessness, the desperation! I can listen to this version over and over!
I've stood in the shadows of Motown since I was a kid. My book of love was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. For a beautiful while, it was my cathedral. I worshiped at its altar, my heart and soul lifted high into the vaulted heights of its gilded dome by the ethereal riffs of The Funk Brothers carrying the sacred voices of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Supremes – the celestial choir celebrating God’s perfect creation.
@vincedc55 Completely agree, I left school just as Motown as taking off, so most of my money went on records, what memories. The Funk Brothers were of course the unsung heroes, this is a fabulous rendition made possible by such fantastic musicians. I am in absolute awe.
The first time I saw this documentary I replayed this song over and over and over again, at least 10 times. You can never get tired of The Funk Brothers and you can never get tired of Joan's voice, specially in this song. Awesome. It's a shame that we'll never see music like this again; today everything is bullshit. I should have been born in the 40's, so I would have had the best of the 50's, 60's and 70's...
I love seeing Richard Pistol Allen and Uriel Jones in the back ground...Pistol was ill during this time but you'd never know it...smiling the whole time.boy this is just power from everyone....I think my fact is right about Pistol being ill...
@bealestbluesss all of the 'old guys' looked so happy to be playing together again. the whole time i watched this, i cried. berry gordy should just be ashamed of himself.
If you liked this, will probably also like another amazing performance. Check out Walking in the Sand version done by Imelda May and Jeff Beck ....can be found here on YouTube. I LOVE this Joan Osborn rendition of What Becomes on the Brokenhearted. Simply fantastic!
It is completely amazing how every single member of the Funk Brothers band is dripping with soul! Watch closely ladies and gentlemen, 'cause you're never gonna see another band like this one again.
Its a shame that there are singers like Joan in this world, yet every time I turn on the radio, & accidentally scan to a "Top 40" station I (we) get bombarded with popcorn fart, sugarsmack, bull shit "artists" that couldn't sing their way out of a wet paper bag.
The brain dead drones we call our peers are now the majority in this world. Because their dollar is worth the same as our dollar we will continue to get soulless music from soulless "artists" & there is nothing we can do.
I am just stunned fully and completely with her ending: "...I'll besearching everywhere just to find someone who cares." I don't have many moments like this.
i know many love her but i could love her, too!i do . she is so beautiful this Joan, her voice her womanhood, her love her grace, and the one dislike may as well get a colt 45 and put it in their mouth pull the trigger you so already dead anyway.

The definitive version of this song, no question. The way Joan's voice breaks up on the 'tell me' section near the end gives me goosebumps, even after watching for the 10th time. Thanks so much for posting this up.
@Philby359 I have had this doco on DVD for about eight or nine years, and I still always go straight to this song and get goosebumps. Glad I'm not the only one!
One of my favorite songs of all-time & what a great version. Joan sounds amazing! I seen the Funk Brothers Reunion tour several years ago & felt very priveliged to be there. Thanks for the upload.

That's how you sing a song. She's respecting the truth of the melody. No ego. She's inside it. That's how you sing.
