I saw him at the N.O. arena he was sitting down at a table.
I stopped and did a double take. I was raised in New Orleans not far from his house but i never ever got the courage to knock on his door and speak to him until then also I figured he'd want to be left alone and so I did but I gathered all the courage I had and figured I lost everything in Katrina and it couldn't hurt to talk to him. He's a really happy person that smile you see isn't fake that you see on other celebrities.
What is this "Big Easy" that the interviewer mentions at :39, as if that were some kind of nickname for the city of New Orleans?? I lived in New Orleans for a year. It's been called the "Crescent City," and before Katrina, "The City that Care Forgot," but I never heard ANYBODY call it "the big easy" as long as I lived there.
@Qrayon I can't tell, was that sarcastic? "The Big Easy" has got to be its most famous nickname. It just barely edges out "Why the fuck would anyone build a city below sea level-- I mean, it's not like there's any advantage to doing that! I can't believe people were actually surprised when it flooded! Now, thousands are dead because of a poorly planned novelty!"
@loserbrett No, I'm not trying to hurt your feelings. Have you ever been to New Orleans? Well, I used to live there, and nobody EVER called it "the Big Easy" then as far as I know. "The Big Easy" was just a fairly recent Hollywood movie about New Orleans. I hope to watch it some day. As far as I can tell, "The Big Easy" is a nickname attached to that city by outsiders who don't know any better, just because they saw that movie. How can a fictional film change the nickname of a whole city?
@Qrayon "The Big Easy" nickname dates back to the early 20th century. It's origin is either referring to the ease that musicians were able to find work there at the turn of the century, or referencing the fact that the city acted as one giant speak-easy during the Prohibition era. It's also been used to reference that it was an extremely cheap place to live.
@loserbrett Thank you, LoserBrett. That's very interesting, and I don't doubt what you say. Again, in all the time that I've lived in New Orleans prior to the movie, and in subsequent visits to the city after the movie came out, I never heard anyone refer to New Orleans as the Big Easy. When I lived there, you weren't even born yet, and in the early 20th century, I was not born yet. I might contact people in or from New Orleans and ask them if NOLA natives currently call it The Big Easy.
Thanks for posting this. I've always loved his music... what a joy. FYI you can buy the album they're talking about on amazon now.
