Utah looks gold. Can you tell the difference though in terms of snow dryness to say more coastal areas in the states? California seems pritty dry to me but Utah said to be dryer.
@atraherne Dry snow can be found the world over on any given day but Utah's snow is consistently the driest and we get a lot more of it. The combination of 80 miles of Great Salt Lake and the surrounding deserts creates an average of 500" of snow annually. The 2010/11 season was over 700"!
@snowbirdskiresort What makes snow dry? I have heard maybe a 100 different explanations. The most convincing was that its important that not only the air temp is below but the ground is below also. Some say inland is better but Hokkaido & Norway are not inland and consistently get extremely dry snow.
Dry snow comes with dry, cold, air. Warmer air can hold more humidity and that means the snow will be wetter/heavier. Snowbird sees some storms that originate in the southern Pacific that have very wet heavy snow but our northern storms are much drier. Altitude change is very important also. This affects the air's temp and ability to hold water.
Look at the science of how air holds water/humidity. These basic laws all apply to snowfall.
Those shots are from Mineral Basin on the run called Junior's Powder Paradise. It looks tame in the video because of the wide angle lens but it is an advanced intermediate/expert run.
I swear it asn't that good when we were there those seasons.....Guess Iw as wrong, hoping for a good bunch a snow when we get there in January!!!! The Aussies are invading!!!!!
The "missile blast" was a recoil-less rifle firing avalanche control rounds. During periods of heavy snow Snowbird Ski Patrol regularly uses recoil-less rifles, Howitzers and explosive charges for avalanche control.
The Bird is Sick... Nothing like it. Not for the faint at Heart. Been going to the Bird for 9 years now. Colorado is good for the family. The Bird is for the boys! Looking forward to pounding some POW POW!!
I've been stuck in North Carolina for 20 plus years and I had to drive 8 hours one way to the nearest decent ski resort (Snowshoe, WV). This year, I just said "fuck that shit"!
I'm moving to Sandy, Utah and I'm so gonna blaze a trail at Snowbird on my shred sled!
Can't hear the music, anyway - speakers died. :( Oh, how I miss Snowbird ... lived in SLC in '80. Putting this in Wanna Goes playlist, 'cause I wanna GO! back to Utah! 5/5 stars!
thanks for this video powderhounds, great stuff
