The story of the good samartain can be found in Luke 10:25-37. It is a parable about loveing our neighbor as ourself and it was told to the jewish people as an example of love for your neighbor. Your neighbor is everyone!

this parable teaches the impossibility of earning one's salvation. The standard, which is perfect love, is too high. It holds up an ethical level for us to strive for, see Mathew 5:48. It attacks racial prejudices. It teaches that love is something you feel and do.

People would always be to religous on things that they would make them selves better than anyone else, and anyone in difference like Samaritains cause the Israelites despised them, or sinners. Jesus stayed and talked with the sinners and ministered to them and talked to them and helped and healed them. That is what this parable is all about.

One thing that most Christians are not aware of is that after Christianity became the dominant religion of western civilization, the Samaritans rebelled against the Christian Byzantine Empire. The Christian Emperor Justinian defeated the revolt and killed off and enslaved most of the Samaritans, almost to the point of extinction. Sad irony.

Obviously, Justinian was Christian in name only. Unfortunately, that's not uncommon. There are many examples of people committing atrocities in the name of religion - not just Christianity.
