Actually none of the three parts were composed by Tommy. The first part is from an old piper tune called Bobin John; probably written in the 18th century, see, for example, Petrie's Fourth Collection of Strathspeys, Reels, and Jigs (1796). The second and third parts are from a slip jig called Barney's Goat (see, for example Ryan's). It is very likely these tunes were being played in the Potts household in Dublin. His father was an excellent piper from Wexford and would have known these tunes.
All's relative, he actually 'composed' the tune using two parts from existing tunes and a thrid of his own invention after seeing a butterfly skip from flower to flower in his garden. It's the original version, in other words.
