How the Fuck do you noy know there is a Salt Mine there? Like seriously , not sarcastically , i know this was 1980 but was no seismic testing of anykind done?

They knew the mine was there. They made several calculations of where to put the rig, with the intent of not hitting the salt mine, but one of the points they used was off, so they hit the mine.
Luckily, nobody died in this disaster.
