Was he welding or cutting? Neither he was using a process commonly know as "lancing".
He was freeing up a jammed tooth and they usually just "pop" on a crusher but this piece shot off from the force and went through his chest - he sadly had no chance :(
How do I know? I worked for the shop and after this happened the owner himself does all the lancing from now on. He was young (21) and died instantly. My regards to his f
I'm takin welding at school too and in welding class is where I saw it...it was on some chicks PowerPoint presentation...any way do u know if that person is ok?
@cwtjps that orange fireball was his head that went flying across the screen. My welding instructor at my school heard this tory and that was his head that flew. He couldn't find the video but i found this and this was the one.
That Orange thing wasnt his head -_- First of all, human body parts dont glow blazing orange like that when they heat up to that point, it would burn to ashes if anything. Secondly, a blast like that wouldn't pull his head off his neck sending the head flying in one peice. That impact would have exploded his head. I hate to go into detail like that, but you clearly do not know what you are talking about, nor does your welding teacher. That orange glowing thing was a piece of metal.
@Tanaen it wouldnt be his fault as he is just the welder! who ever asked for the job to be done or the person who is meant to check it such as the health and safety manager at the time would be held responsible! same thing happend near where i work, a welder was asked to weld a petrol tanker, was told it was cleaned out and no fumes in there, as he arked up BOOM and there was nothing left of him! heart goes out to his family!
It looks like he set his torches down near or on the hot work surface or a hot bit of slag as others have mentioned. If you watch when he moves his torches down, and look really close you can see the explosion starting from his side and not where he was cutting,it deffinatly looks as if his hoses melted through and ignited. Even though this is an old video my prayers go out to him and his family, and I really hope he survived. no one deserves this for just doing his job supporting his family. IC
Unfortunately there is no way he lived if you play the video over and over you will see a glowing chunk of steel fly out and hits him in the head, that is what threw him back not the explosion itself. God rest his soul
The first and most important thing that I have taught new people around a crusher is that the most dangerious thing to do is get tramp metal out of a stalled crusher. there are many ways to do it way less dangerous than this guy is trying and reguardless of the welders fate the supervisor should be held responsible. I encourage and welcome replys to my comment !
My prayers to his fam ... I almost died welding but it was the ungrounded temp power that caused me to ground out ..I'm so happy to go home everday now an live my life to the fullest.. Were jys trying to make a Living an I wish the assholes with the jerk comments would have a little respect... Local 1506. Josef hate -stay safe
@krimif yes or thier just such jerks that don't even have the slightest clue and common sense to realize how awfull this is, and how bad, quickly and easily something like this could happen to them. These people are either just acting like Idiots just because they can behind a computer screen where thier confortable, or thier heartless bastards that don't care about anyone but themselvs. The world dosn't have room for either far as i'm concerned. Good comment mate. IC.
@josefh8. even smaller welders can do it... i got grounded in a metal container with a 250 amp arc welder and wasnt able to let go of the stinger, someone was right there and was able to shut it off before i did go into cardiac arrest, it was extremly painful. if also had slag pop on me, burn through my welding jacket, and into my skin through all the tissues and rest on my bone.. its a dangerous job but i love what i do so im going to keep doing..
As far as I'm aware, he was welding with an arc welder, while also having an oxy-acetylene welder in there with him. According to the rules regarding entry into a confined space, you should never have bottled gas in there with you, except compressed air for breathing. As he finished the job, he put the hot welding tool down on the oxy-acetlyene lines, burning through them instantly, causing the explosion.
Looks like he was preheating something with a torch, but there was just an explosion, no gas or smoke, and a big chunk of steel? maybe a small boiler explosion
Doesn't look like a chemical reaction...no smoke. I agree with maxpower...looks like an explosion material. Reminds me of welding over brick pavement in the winter...boom. Hope the guy wasn't hurt. At least the standby man was on his J-O-B
looks like a rock crusher for a coal mine he probally got some crap on his welding rod and it caught on fire and when he dropped it it must of set some more on fire and the confined space made a cannon with a large piece of rock as the ball
PS. lol to XJproto: i think a bit of slag in the eye is the least of that guys worries :P every welder cops a nice 6000 degree peice of slak to a sensitive part of the body at least once in their life and alot of people who havent been trained correctly gets the brass eyeball
*aka* welders flash (makes ur eyes feel all fukn kinds of messed up hence the name the brass eyeball) ive never had it myself but ive come close once when someone bumped me & i nearly arc'd the electrode with my sheild up
haha i bet ya got a nice flash from it, not to worry i know guys who dont even use a welding mask, they just squint (god knows what kinda damage theyre doing to their eyes) but theyve been doing it that long that they can handle it. ive never had a flash myself. i concentrate alot when im working, lack of concentration is the main ingredient in a recipe for danger
its the guys own fault, i dont know about anywhere else but in my country you have to do occupational health and safety training before even picking up an oxy torch and a very difficult confined spaces exam. what he should have done is checked his regulators before starting work, then set up some form of ventilation blowing away the acetylene gas (which is heavyer then air so a big fan or something would be needed) and also something to suck away the fumes caused by oxy acetylene welding.
Highly dependent on whether his gas actually caused the explosion.
There is a chance he was actually electrocuted as he was thrown quite a distance yet no smoke to indicate a gas ignition however a hell of a lot of sparks, possibly from arcing. Also no audio to confirm a boom from a gas explosion.
Apparently electric shocks can throw you many feet as your muscles are forced to contract so hard.
I don't know specifics of either but know not to jump to conclusions without all the facts.
@Treblaine it wasn't really an explosion at all it was a steel chewing tooth in a crusher causing it to stall he was oxy-lancing it out and it was under a couple hundred tons of pressure that released and it shot a very hot 30lbs tooth at him he was turning off his oxygen when it finally gave from what ive heard
@yesac101 Your right I revoke my previous assumption about lines catching and exploding. I clearly see now the chunk of steel crusher tooth or a rouge chunk you talk about hitting him in the head. If only he had stayed sitting down for a couple more seconds the brunt of it looked like it would have went over his head. Very unfortunate, this is tough to watch for me :(. The inches game makes me so upset, I just wish he was a few inches lower and back:( All the best to his family.
@adztegb18c yes, oxy fuel cutting uses both oxy and acet. ( i've been in the welding trade for 20yrs ) but a oxy. lance ( is the tool in used in this vid. ) use high amps and pure high pressure oxygen
@treblemc you have obviously never worked for a large company that requires jobs like this done fast, i know there are rules in place for such things, but where lost money is concerned, and as most companies call it DOWN TIME, iv seen so many guys do jobs that they just should never of been asked to do! try telling the owner of a rock crusher thats loosing $85000 an hour your just popping over to the work shop to get the ventalation equipment, AAhh no your not!! get that fucking thing running!!!
@MrWebsie Ain't that the truth.Try telling the yard head that you need him to shut down some overhead lines (running product so rocks wont be rainin down on you) while you fix a cone crusher or someting else. You get a fix it or leave we ain't shutting nothing down. My fav. was patching chutes ( inside the chute no outside access), underneath the mill that seperates rock to run to smaller crushers, in a fucking thunder storm.

If there was too much oxygen then it probably would of exploded when he he began cutting. He wasn't welding he was "gouging" Cutting medal with a carbon rod and most likely either cut something that was under extreme contortion and when it got hot or was cut it unwarped itself.
First off he was Oxy Lancing. Thats what he was turning off a supply of oxygen. The reason why that explosion happened was because there was probably a tooth from a bucket loader lodged in the crusher. After cutting it the incredibly huge amount of force on the tooth let go causing it to shoot off out and at the head of the operator there. I honestly recon he didn't make it which is a shame. Teeth are a regular problem in crushers.
@mattsbarra indeed crusher are dangerous monsters of equipment..... although convertor barrels can be dangerous around new crane operators beware the crane!!
That guy died. He WAS cutting. When you weld, you don't have a torch that you have to shut off when you're done. When he starts to get up, you can see that he turns it off. When you stop welding, the arc is broken immediately. There was hot slag or somethin sitting on the hoses and burned through.
