@143tbone Applying pan & crop won't affect the audio. But if the video file is mp4/mov and you allow Apple to apply a quicktime or itunes update, it is possible the new quicktime codec is not compatible with the older mov/mp4 file. If that is the case, uninstall quicktime, and install an older version.
@143tbone No, sorry. I was actually replying, I thought, to your youtube settings video. I applied THOSE settings. By the way, thank you for all these videos.
@BuildingCastlesMusic You pan by creating a keyframe as shown in the demo, and changing the zoom or pan at the point of the keyframe. Works the same whether zooming or panning.
Also, when you click the pan/crop button, under position, i'm used to a masking tool so you can cut an image out of the whole image, can you do that with vegas movie maker 11 pro? because that is what program i am using...
@MrSlyFox581 The event pan & crop button appears at the very end of a video clip. If you don't see it there, right click on the clip in the timeline, and you'll find an event pan and crop option there.
Like, how do you crop something out of the picture. per say you wanted one guy out of the picture. I have seen many people do it. I believe it is also called Masking? Not sure, but I make Animashes (Not sure if you know what they are) and it really comes in handy. Please help.
ok i have sony vegas movie studio hd 9. at 1:06 you tell us to click on the top button for pan/crop, but on mine it only shows the event FX tool. do you know how i could get to it?
For some reason, although I've been using pan and crop tool for many months, out of no where it won't let me crop with precision. Instead of letting me move in the video by about a centimeter, it makes me move it in over an inch. could you help me please? I'm using Sony Vegas Pro 10
@TheknifersfromHeLL On the left side of the pan & crop window are icons including 'move freely' and 'lock aspect ratio'. Make sure these aren't clicked on or off causing the problem.
Also make sure 'maintain aspect ratio' and 'stretch to fill frame' settings aren't causing the problem.
@563raptor Delay in Pan & Crop is usually related to lack of resources (RAM, CPU speed) on the computer, or problem format with the video (mp4/mov). Try converting the video clip to avi or wmv and try pan & crop again.
How do you literally crop the image? I have a clip that I want to take a zoomed in section of, crop it, and place on the corner of another clip. I can make squares and rectangles by doing what's on the video, but it's always centered because I'm really only moving the perimeters of the preview and not the video itself, and when I do that it changes the magnification at the same time. If you understand, I would love some help, and if you don't, I will try to explain it better.
@guerillabill Alright, that helped with the moving part. But how do I physically crop the image so I only have that portion to work with? I know that you can zoom in on it, but what if I wanted to just show one person in that picture on the TV screen?
@timburtonlover369 If you want to remove all other objects except one person, you'd have to use masking whici Sony Vegas Pro has, but Sony Movie Studio doesn't. In Sony Movie Studio, it would be better to use Photoshop Elements Magic extractor to remove what you don't want in the photo, before bringing it into Movie Studio.
@nelle077 I show how to convert video to widescreen and remove the black bars in my YouTube video 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio'
Thank you for the excellent video. However, I cannot figure out how you make the Event Pan Crop window do that preview! You say you put your mouse over a scroll bar arrow, but my cursor never moves! Thanks for any help.
@verity9000 On the pan & crop window, there is a 'sync to cursor' icon to the left of the keyframe icons. Click it to make the curson in pan & crop sync to the display in the preview window.
@guerillabill I am aware of the Sync Cursor switch. The problem I am trying to describe is that the Pan Crop Cursor does not sync with the Main Window Cursor in ANY case. All the PC cursor does is jump to wherever I stop, but it never follows/scrolls as things are playing, which makes it very difficult to know where keyframes are kicking in. In your video, your Pan Crop window plays along at the same time!
In mine, ONLY the main window scrolls. Any ideas? Thanks!
@verity9000 When you scrub the player in the pan & crop window, it syncs with the preview window and the timeline. But if you use the timeline player, it doesn't sync with the pan & crop window. If it did, you would lose your cursor position in the pan & crop window.
Use the pan & crop scub control to move and sync with the timeline and preview window.
@guerillabill Thank you for your responses. Maybe I have to think differently about the process, as I don't understand the logic of what you're saying, but will try it out.
@barbershop22 The video velocity envelope is only in Vegas Pro, but there is an easy way to speed up or slow down video in Sony Movie Studio. See how to do it in my YouTube video, 'Speed up Slow down portions of video in Sony Vegas Movie Studio'
My pan and crop isn't working. When I try to change the aspect ratio to 16.9 and then move the tool to zoom in, rotate etc.. it just switches back to untilted and wont work.
Hey Bill, im having a little bit of trouble with the pan/crop feature. When i move my image in the pan/crop , i can only move it side to side, but not up/down, diagonal, or freely across the image like you can.
Hi, thanks for your videos, your videos are very helpful.I have a doubt about pan-crop and no one seems to know. I want a still gift image move from outside one corner of the screen to another, in the effect window looks fine but in the video it appears as if it where appearing from bellow a curtain or something , it looks like the first secs of " Hetalia Assassins creed Ezio hatafutte parade ending" here in youtube . Why is that and how can it be corrected?
@balamstudios If you don't set your project properties to match the height and width of your video, when you apply pan & crop, the edges of the pan start with the video size in the project properties, not the video clip on the screen. So set your project properties before you apply pan & crop, so you'll get full screen coverage.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I have seen this done in other programs but did not know till now (after owning this program for YEARS) that it could be done in Vegas. Good on ya mate!
@waderpl You've probably docked the pan & crop window behind another window or tab. See my YouTube video 'find lost windows in Sony Vegas' for solution.
Hi Bill, when I'm editing with sony vegas for some reason on my preview monitor the video is not playing smooth it pauses a little bit and then it will play good for a while and then again it won't play normal again, it does that more with the transitions, it's not playing in real time, is there something I have to set or adjust to the software? Thanks.
@jloza98 The smoothness of playback is dependent on your computer power, Ram, video card ram, and format of the video you are editing. Mov/mp4 is more unstable on playback, while avi & wmv is the best.
You can set your preview window settings to 'preview, auto' for better performance. Or get a faster computer, more Ram, better video card.
Is there anyway you can save a whole timeline for pan/crop? Because I have a pan/crop I want to save, and use it for other videos, but when I save it, it only saves the first keyframe. I've tried highlighting all of the keyframes and saving it, but it still doesn't do it. Please help!
Hi dude, i have a question. You know adverts that appear at the bottom of your videos? Im trying to create that effect in Vegas movies, but i cant seem to make the images get any smaller, or if i do, it cuts bits out. I want it to be like the adverts that appear at the bottom of your video. Please help me! :D
@jokingpenguin Start by setting project properties to match your desired render aspect ratio. Then use pan & crop and turn off 'maintain aspect' and 'stretch to fill frame'.
This will allow you to resize and position the 'pan & crop' image to suit your needs.
@XRockZilla You've probably docked your pan & crop window behind another tabbed window in Vegas. See my youtube video 'find lost windows in sony vegas'.
@guerillabill that's no what i mean. some ppl scroll their mouse on their desktop to make the picture smaller or bigger so that you would have more room to crop it even smaller
@patt7000 Click the 'pan & crop' button on a video clip or photo. That brings up the pan & crop window. Use the zoom option to zoom back till you see the f.
hey mate, is there any way you can make the keyframes move the same speed at all times?
cause for me it starts slowly and then in the middle between the two keyframes it goes fast and then just before the next keyframe it gets slow again..
hm i was hoping you could help me with an issue i accidently clicked the magnify glass and made the entire thing small the problem is i cant go back to other way and editing it is darn right impossible right now
@allodspvp Use the + sign on the bottom of the timeline to horizontally expand the timeline. That usually creates room on the clip on the track for the pan and crop, and video effect icons.
my pan and crop wont work it pops up but it doesnt come up... did i disable it or something im uninstalling but im worried itll do it again eventually
Do you know how to make it so it doesn't zoom when you create a new keyframe but it instead is instantly changed to the new keyframe, no zoom effect. Please respond if you know? Thanks mate!
Erm, i used Chroma Green Keyer on my animation, and when i try to pan and crop around it, sometimes it looks like there is this invisible wall, and i found out it was the Pan and crop | F | thingy i dont know how to explain heres a picture....
h t t p : / /i51(dot)tinypic(dot)com/ngxbbm(dot)jpg
Youtube doesnt allow other websites so replace the (dot)s with t. and backspace the spaces in the h t t p : / / Thx
@Golddust21 Set project properties to 720p. Then use pan & crop for each video clip, right click in the center of the pan & crop window, select 'match output aspect ratio'
@NanoHart Each image file is treated as a separate event, and each event has its own pan & crop. So no, you can't pan across several images using pan & crop.
But you can use a program to convert all the images into one long strip. Then put that on the timeline and pan & crop that. I show an example of that in my YouTube video 'Cool effects with Sony Movie Studio '
@guerillabill Thanks a bunch! :) It would definitely be useful to be able to pan and crop multiple events by just selecting them and panning and cropping right there. I'd use that all the time for animating frames and such.
@NanoHart You could use Picture-in-Picture video FX to place photos on the screen and use "making composing child" to an "empty" parent track above them. Use the track motion in the parent track to move from one pic to another.
If you want I can prepare a tutorial but it'll take me some time.
@dramadelli The masking effect is found in pan & crop. Place a check in the mask box on the timeline, then use the mask tool (looks like a pen) to draw the mask.
@TheWiseRat22 You've either docked the window behind another, or moved it completed off the desktop. See my YouTube video, 'Finding lost windows in Sony Vegas & Movie Studio '
Hi! Some how my Pan/crop "hotkey" from the end of the clips disapeared and I have no Idea how to get it back. Could you help me out with this problem? There is still the Event FX button and I can use Pan/crop with rightclick but its till harder than with hotkey.
@killpops Just click the 'move freely' icon in the pan & crop window. To see how, view my YouTube video 'Solve Pan & Crop problem in Sony Vegas Movie Studio '
@MyThIcaL343 When you use the S key to split a video, you are only splitting it on the timeline. The original source video is never modified in Sony Movie Studio.
You can use 'undo' to remove a split immediatley after it is created, or you can use Group, New, to group the split back in with the original video
@guerillabill not like an accidental split..but i mean what do i do if i want an effect to last for more than one video (i mean through a couple of split videos)
hey man, I have 2 options, either I buy a 2gb ram or buy a new laptop just to get my sony vegas to run better, but I really wanna get a 2gb ram but I dont wanna risk a rip off that it still didn't work, I have a Toshiba windows vista laptop, and this kid has a toshiba windows 7 laptop and his runs like crazy, what should I do man : (
@FierceIndian07 To keep it the same position, put your mouse on the keyframe, right click, select copy, and then move to the point in the keyframe timeline where you want movement to start again. At that point, right click and paste the copied keyframe. The video will hold position between the two keyframes that are the same.
wow Im so confuse about what those key frames mean, what Im trying to do is pan crop the muzzle flash on the gun in the video and its so confusing, could U make another pan crop tutor video to explain it better?
@FierceIndian07 Each keyframe represents a movement to that pan & zoom size and position in the timeline. I do have other pan & crop tutorials on YouTube.
@DontBeAPrick You need to click the 'movement' icon in the pan & crop controls until you see 'move freely'. See my YouTube video 'Solve Pan & Crop problem in Sony Vegas Movie Studio '
@Spigs0964 That is a very famous photo of the Wild Bunch - Wyatt Earp. Doc Holliday. Butch Cassidy., the Sundance Kid. 'Hanging' Judge Roy Bean. Jeremiah Johnson.
grr, first when I try to turn the giant square, it won't move, except for rotate and I tried using all the tools including normal editing tool to make it move, then I try to hit the plus key frame thing, and it's not adding any frames. i just click it and it does nothing. pissing me off to no end....
@LooneyTunerIan Yes, you can do a left to right pan without zoom - if the image is wider than it is tall. And you can use the keyframe timeline in the pan & crop window to control the speed of the pan
When i Pan and Crop and I try to drag One side it Pulls the whole entire box, and Makes it all smaller? How do i fix this? I can't only select one side to move in, it moves every side equally. Please respond!!!
@StormTrooper305 You can only pan & crop one image at a time, But you can use copy to copy the image, and then paste the attributes on any image to apply the same pan & crop - or create a pan and crop preset and use it for each image
@guerillabill Thanks! One more question...I have a load of images on my time line. And I want to render it HD without the black bars. That means I have to 'crop' out the black bars, so that its wide-screen. Is there an alternative way, so that I don't have to pan and crop every single image?
sorry, but the event pan/crop window is not hiding anywhere. i checked everywhere very carefully and it still does not show up. i even moved all the windows around and still nothing. i've even done the control/shift thing and still nothing. do you think i need to uninstall it then put it back on? thank you for the help
i really need your help! my event pan/crop button will not work! i've been clicking it many times and the pan/crop screen will not pop up at all and i am getting very frustrated! can you please, please help me!
@SallyandKayleeShow You may have moved the pan & crop window off the windows desktop. In that case, you'll have to set your windows display settings so that more of the desktop shows, and then drag pan & crop back onto Movie Studio.
hi. i did more experiments with this technique. i had one idea i couldn't do though... here's what i had in mind:
using your still photo, i'd like to create a vertical crop w/c will cover the first 2/3 portion of the photo and will leave the last 1/3 visible. effect would be to show only the 3rd guy sitting.
now, i'd like to transfer this bit of cropped photo to the left side of the screen...
i tried all toggle buttons and moving cursors, but i can't seem to make it work. please help. thanks.
@ewemeboth You can highlight the clip in the main editing window, click the 'loop' option near the play button, and play the clip in the preview window as you make changes to the pan & crop window
hi bill you have always awnsered my questions in the past so now i come to ask another one. Today i accidently clicked the little magnifer button by the scroll bars.. everything got super tiny and clicking it again dosent do anything. Do you know what to do to make everything big again?
Click the + sign above the magnifiier to increase the magification of the timeline. You may have to click the + several times to get the size you want
thanks man this is my first 4 weeks using vegas9 chck out my videos
also before i usually use pinnacle 14 to edit pretty good software but it doesnt allow much of the manual labor and creativity as vegas and it is really cpu intensive and slow. u almost need a super computer to edit.
Thanks! This helped sooo much! My panning and cropping before was horrible, just the average zooming in & out. But this really changed my videos! Thanks
I used all your recommended settings and then when I went to play the video there was no audio. What am I doing wrong?
143tbone 2 weeks ago in playlist GuerillaBill
@143tbone Applying pan & crop won't affect the audio. But if the video file is mp4/mov and you allow Apple to apply a quicktime or itunes update, it is possible the new quicktime codec is not compatible with the older mov/mp4 file. If that is the case, uninstall quicktime, and install an older version.

@allodspvp Use the + sign on the bottom of the timeline to horizontally expand the timeline. That usually creates room on the clip on the track for the pan and crop, and video effect icons.

Thank you sir. That was great. :D I was wondering how to do that.
huyked 1 year ago
Do you know how to make it so it doesn't zoom when you create a new keyframe but it instead is instantly changed to the new keyframe, no zoom effect. Please respond if you know? Thanks mate!
TheMercifies 1 year ago
@TheMercifies To do instant zooms using keyframes, put a unzoomed keyframe just one frame away from the zoomed keyframe.

@Golddust21 I show how to get widescreen at YouTube in my YouTube video 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio '

@Golddust21 Set project properties to 720p. Then use pan & crop for each video clip, right click in the center of the pan & crop window, select 'match output aspect ratio'

I know how to pan and crop, but do you know if it's possible to group mulitple pictures/videos together and pan through that entire set? Thanks!
~Nano
NanoHart 1 year ago
@NanoHart Each image file is treated as a separate event, and each event has its own pan & crop. So no, you can't pan across several images using pan & crop.
But you can use a program to convert all the images into one long strip. Then put that on the timeline and pan & crop that. I show an example of that in my YouTube video 'Cool effects with Sony Movie Studio '
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill Thanks a bunch! :) It would definitely be useful to be able to pan and crop multiple events by just selecting them and panning and cropping right there. I'd use that all the time for animating frames and such.
NanoHart 1 year ago
@NanoHart You can, using a Chroma Keyer...
GoldenChalk 1 year ago
@NanoHart You could use Picture-in-Picture video FX to place photos on the screen and use "making composing child" to an "empty" parent track above them. Use the track motion in the parent track to move from one pic to another.
If you want I can prepare a tutorial but it'll take me some time.

guerillabill 1 year ago
@dramadelli The masking effect is found in pan & crop. Place a check in the mask box on the timeline, then use the mask tool (looks like a pen) to draw the mask.
guerillabill 1 year ago
@dramadelli Sony Movie Studio doesn't have video masking, but you can use chromakey to replace solid background with image or video of your choice.
Sony Vegas Pro does have masking.

Is it possible to create a circular video clip in Sonyvegas?
Cheers Baz.
Bazdavies1 1 year ago
@Bazdavies1 What do you mean by circular? Do you mean looping?
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill HI Bill--not looped I mean a round video clip--kinda like a spotlight effect.
Cheers Baz.

@Bazdavies1 Yes, you can do that. Use the bumpmap effect, choose spotlight up, change the size slider, and lower the intensity

@guerillabill i got one question, if i cut a video in two pieces..like with S or whater it is on 7,0, can i merge back together?
MyThIcaL343 1 year ago
@MyThIcaL343 When you use the S key to split a video, you are only splitting it on the timeline. The original source video is never modified in Sony Movie Studio.
You can use 'undo' to remove a split immediatley after it is created, or you can use Group, New, to group the split back in with the original video
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill not like an accidental split..but i mean what do i do if i want an effect to last for more than one video (i mean through a couple of split videos)

FierceIndian07 1 year ago
@FierceIndian07 To keep it the same position, put your mouse on the keyframe, right click, select copy, and then move to the point in the keyframe timeline where you want movement to start again. At that point, right click and paste the copied keyframe. The video will hold position between the two keyframes that are the same.
guerillabill 1 year ago
wow Im so confuse about what those key frames mean, what Im trying to do is pan crop the muzzle flash on the gun in the video and its so confusing, could U make another pan crop tutor video to explain it better?
FierceIndian07 1 year ago
@FierceIndian07 Each keyframe represents a movement to that pan & zoom size and position in the timeline. I do have other pan & crop tutorials on YouTube.

quick question how do i get the preview to display in 1280x720 not 640x360?
mannsinnx 1 year ago
@mannsinnx Connect your computer to an external monitor, and set the preview window to display on that monitor.
You'll need a lot of RAM (8gig or more), and a video card with at least 1028meg, in order to preview 1280X720.
Once set up, set the preview window options to 'best, full' to view at full project size.

Is there a way to make a left-to-right pan without any zooms? If so, can you change the speed of it?
LooneyTunerIan 1 year ago
@LooneyTunerIan Yes, you can do a left to right pan without zoom - if the image is wider than it is tall. And you can use the keyframe timeline in the pan & crop window to control the speed of the pan
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill Can you d a tutorial video of it? Just to be safe? :)

How do pan and crop a number of images at the same time? please reply!! :)
StormTrooper305 1 year ago
@StormTrooper305 You can only pan & crop one image at a time, But you can use copy to copy the image, and then paste the attributes on any image to apply the same pan & crop - or create a pan and crop preset and use it for each image
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill Thanks! One more question...I have a load of images on my time line. And I want to render it HD without the black bars. That means I have to 'crop' out the black bars, so that its wide-screen. Is there an alternative way, so that I don't have to pan and crop every single image?
StormTrooper305 1 year ago
sorry, but the event pan/crop window is not hiding anywhere. i checked everywhere very carefully and it still does not show up. i even moved all the windows around and still nothing. i've even done the control/shift thing and still nothing. do you think i need to uninstall it then put it back on? thank you for the help

i really need your help! my event pan/crop button will not work! i've been clicking it many times and the pan/crop screen will not pop up at all and i am getting very frustrated! can you please, please help me!
SallyandKayleeShow 1 year ago
@SallyandKayleeShow You've either docked your pan & crop window behind another, or moved it completely off the windows screen.
Find solution in my YouTube video, 'find lost windows in Sony Movie Studio'
guerillabill 1 year ago
@SallyandKayleeShow You may have moved the pan & crop window off the windows desktop. In that case, you'll have to set your windows display settings so that more of the desktop shows, and then drag pan & crop back onto Movie Studio.
guerillabill 1 year ago
hi. i did more experiments with this technique. i had one idea i couldn't do though... here's what i had in mind:
using your still photo, i'd like to create a vertical crop w/c will cover the first 2/3 portion of the photo and will leave the last 1/3 visible. effect would be to show only the 3rd guy sitting.
now, i'd like to transfer this bit of cropped photo to the left side of the screen...
i tried all toggle buttons and moving cursors, but i can't seem to make it work. please help. thanks.

Thanks, but is there another way of running the preview in the Keyframe timeline other than draging the slider bar across ?
ewemeboth 1 year ago
@ewemeboth You can highlight the clip in the main editing window, click the 'loop' option near the play button, and play the clip in the preview window as you make changes to the pan & crop window
guerillabill 1 year ago
How did you run the preview of the Keyframe timeline at 2:40 ?

@ewemeboth Uset the slider bar at the top of the keyframe timeline - its the small bar on the same line as the time ruler in the keyframe window
