Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was probably the worst of the trilogy by far. It was much too ''Hollywood'', mainly down to the involvement of Tina Turner.
Love this song! BUT, the "rock video" version (see list on right) is waaaay better...more hard driving guitar and percussion instead of mostly keyboards. Check it out!
Really sets the mood for the film used to own the VHS then then the Laserdisc then the DVD but there is no blu ray only for the 1st two movies i have just ordered the limited edition soundtrack by maurice jarre i already have a 12" version of this song and the album one of the best openings from an 80s movie
The crackle of thunder is integrated into the song so as to be part of the music. However, on the soundtrack it cannot be heard, which is disappointing. As with CONAN THE BARBARIAN, where, in the main title, a forged sword is being pounded on an anvil to the rhythm of the music, these sounds were not on the music tracks, but were on the sound effects tracks.
Companies that specialize in soundtracks should be aware of how important such sound effects are to the musical experience.
Yeah, I've noticed that this soundtrack seems different than the stand-alone version. I think movies and series tend to do this alot by altering soundtracks just specifically for the intro. Though this is one of the very few intro music I think should've had a full-blown version just like the intro to the sci-fi series Andromeda from the first season.
@NaziGOPBallmer Yep, songs are usually rearranged and remixed for soundtracks. Same goes for the single versions of most songs vs. the LP version, though for singles the song is just shortened to radio suitable levels (remove long intros and outros, instrumental breaks, parts of solos) and the mix is punched up to jump out of the radio better. A good example of a changed song from a movie is "The Hero" by Queen, which plays during the end credits, a bit different from the LP.
What's funny about One of The Living is that it's a rare song to find on CD (I believe one of her Import Greatest Hits comps has it) yet it won Tina a Grammy.
The best part of this credits sequence (other than the entire song) is just the quick bit of the wind blowing and then boom, the piano/drum beat and "MEL GIBSON". This intro don't fuck around and waste time.
@peterp21 Yes! That and the whoosh/bang noise when MAD MAX..... BEYOND THUNDERDOME appears on screen. It sent chills up my spine when I saw it in the theater as a kid :)
The laser disk had the best version and clarity in my opinion.. But the 5.1 digital dolby surround sound was awesome too, it just sends chills down my spine, the subwoofer just shook the house.
Thanks for putting this up. I was gonna myself had I not found it. I may still clean up the 'song' by fading out the end of the track I have.
It's a totally bad-ass tune. That it's so short is shameful. Actually, that this version has never been released is the shameful fact. I guess I'm glad to have heard any of it at all ever. The album version doesn't hold a candle.
I have to listen to this repeatedly in order to quench the thirst I feel when it's overtaken by the blowing desert winds.
Did you know? They were going to use the music somewhere in the middle of the movie for the introduction, but when they heard Tina's new song, they used it instead for the intro. Glad they did !
Having read that I wonder how much or what portion of the song would've been used, not to mention how. Would it have been featured prominently earning it a healthy position in soundtrack's release? Would it have been overshadowed or drown by foreground noise, a battle, petty conversation, heavy-hitting V8's driving down a highway? hehe
What we got is grand, but I feel someone misplaced their love for it or didn't tell the right people to release both versions of the song.
I have been looking for this version of this song for over 26 years. I was very disapointed when it wasn't on the soundtrack in this version. I always thought that someone, somewhere, someday would release this "up-tempo version of "One of the Living" because it really rocks! Alas, this I guess will always be my wish
@JPFAN5 Heck yeah.. when I first saw it at a movie drive in when it first came out it was cool then.. then when I got older and got some money I hooked up the Laser Disc version to a big screen and dolby 5.1 surround sound with a subwoofer it almost brought me to tears and sent shivers up my back.. .and the part where he says... Ladies and gentlemen.. Dying times here.

I will never understand why they used a different version for the opening than used on the soundtrack. I always liked this version better...
