  • Why can't country music get around to being country again. I hate the crap they pass off as country now.

  • @baddogcandles With few exceptions, country hasn't been worth a damn since 1990.

  • Fabulous singer, but when we saw him live my wife whispered "He;s a waxwork"! and people started laughing. Does he do anything but ker-plunk? Still like the tune and happily play it in the car.

  • I have always liked this song. Thanks for sharing!

  • I heard Bill Anderson wrote this on a napkin at a Nashville restaurant after some "self-righteous biddy" approached him about sitting at a table with a woman who was not his wife. Is that true?

  • He had some good ones. One of my favorite singers.

  • This one was one of my favorites when I was in the second grade.

  • Self righteous woman Lol...a good sticky beak song..!! good on ya cal x

  • whoa! microfrets! don't see many of them.

  • I hope mt nieghbors like this song!!!

  • This song should of mae Cal a millionaire....heard he is retired now...good for him.

  • yea bitch shut your mouth .. or cal will smack it shut

  • A nip from the flask before and a serious cocktail after are the three best things in life.

  • love this song

  • Well being a catholic I think I'm required to indulge in a drink or two or three etc.

  • AMEN....NO HYPOCRITES HERE.

  • Yes the Lord appreciates an honest man. So honestly i'd like another beer please. :) BURP

  • The Lord knows I'm drinkin and runnin around and he don't need your loud mouth informin the town.......Wooo Hoooo Preach it brother! :) Church made me Judge people and that was wrong. I try to mind my own business then I won't be mindin others. Thanks for a great classic. :)

  • greatest

  • There are a lot of people that I could dedicate this song to...those professed "Christians".

    Chuck Green

  • @SuperChuckgreen I'm a Christian and the bible does not say not to drink. It recommends you do it in moderation. It is very adictive for some people, including myself, for 9 years I couln't stop I started as a 19yr old and didnt stop. I don't drink anymore but yeah most Christians actually know what the bible says. I think the Baptist church has somethin in their charter about alcohol idk why.

  • @SuperChuckgreen Ya know ; that being a Christian means ; you ; Try with all you have to do it R I G H T ; if you fail you can be forgiven ; but first you must Meet the Lord God and accept his Son as your savior ! Not difficult after that ; except just keep the devils arz kicked and doing your very best ! Full time Job ; try helping instead of critizing ; if they are your Village people ; help them ; but don`t harp on it !

  • @SuperChuckgreen yes thanks. we all do wrong but the drunks get it the worst.

  • @SuperChuckgreen real christians how to party.

  • @SuperChuckgreen I'm a Christian and I still enjoy a bar with a band that can play good country music! As much as I can't stand "Country Bumkin" ole Cal Smith nailed this one!

  • @SuperChuckgreen AMEN Chuck!

  • singing the plain truth---

  • i love this song cos it speaks the truth, so many ppl love to stick their nose n other ppls bussiness

  • COOL SONG!!!!!

  • @1963kate new wine= grape juice

  • SING IT PRETTY CAL, YOU ARE A TALENTED MAN.

  • He tells it like it is .. love it! Great classic country!

  • But you see I see it this way I dont think drinking is a sin , Unless you drink so much you harm your body , or drink and drive and wreck and do harm to your someone els or your self, if you over eat its not good to harm your body, but we do need to eat, nothing to its self is sinful but its how we use it and , You can use a cain to help you walk or beat someone to death with but is the cain a sin its self ? or how we use it, just dont hurt people as you pass through this life seek charity .

  • @fromthispoint

Some people drink purely for recreation. You don't really need to get drunk for recreation. When I'm recreating, I prefer to keep a clear head. Besides, for medical reasons, I CAN'T drink. I think what you meant by "cain" is spelled "cane", but otherwise your argument about that one is right on the money! ("Cain" was the fellow who killed his brother.)

  • @A1l2l2e2n4 a cane ok..Thank you...sorry with I could spell better sorry.

  • @A1l2l2e2n4 I like drinkin" for recreatin" and procreatin"!

  • Well here is the catchy part if you live until later tonight , with every breath you draw in < it could be a breath you could use to pray right there and then , You may not make it to tonight, The Lord dont want us to sin now and say Ohhh I will ask forgiveness later , when you do this your a servant to what ever your doing at the time you do it, this song is missleading many country songs were missleading, that is why the bible says when you sing sing with the understanding.

  • Thumbs up if your 271,634

  • Were it written today, it would not be "You self-righteous biddy," hahah.

  • @Yakerina Yeah but it's more fun and classy that way!

  • @noirdamecom There are people who wouldn't know what "biddy" means, anyway! Heehee

  • @1963kate he sure did!

  • This one of those I forgot about until I heard it now

  • 6 people dont like the Lord knowing theyre drinkin'

  • @Everclearish i see there's 7 now, and i'm glad i'm not one of them! SET'M UP BARTENDER, AND HAVE ONE YOURSELF!!

  • @HGBJR1955 Yes it is 7 dislikes now. Well one of those dislikes is probably a Muslim rock n roller lol

  • Great song by a great country singer.

  • The Lord appreciates an honest man.

  • @tanksbb yes he does!

  • @tanksbb your are right. he already knows might as well be honest

  • I very much agree.

  • One of the great singers.

  • @1963kate Amen

  • amen and amen

  • My real dad was friends with Cal in the 70s.

  • bill anderson and his wife went out to eat and people from there church walked in and he said to his wife should we use these menus to hide our wine and she said why the lord knows im drinking true story

  • bill anderson wrote that song great story behind it to

  • great love this song

  • Thump!!!! that's the sound of a stone bouncing off anyones thick noggin' who thinks they are better than anyone else...I don't cast stones nor pass criticism towards anyone so why would anybody cast the 1st stone or draw the 1st blood... we all die & once you're dead you're dead regardless of beliefs...that will be the time of reckoning for all of us. In the mean time can we try not to speed up the process?

  • @MrGerard5510 You're a good person Gerard!

  • @jsilence418 Why Thank You jsilence418....It's always been my belief that silence is golden :)......A Wise man speaks when spoken to...a Foolish man never shuts up. I'm not religious man but most importantly I'm not an ignorant man.

  • @MrGerard5510 you do not sound like an ignorant man Gerard

  • @MrGerard5510 Oh " some times a conspiracy of silence, speaks louder than words" John Lennon.

  • Sinning ain't right...with a pretty young lass..I guess this applies to every one in that smoky, dimlit, hell hole they call a "bar". Especially true of those beer guzzleing back sliders propped up on the bar stools...shame, shame, shame !

  • Living it still to this day,,,

  • We had a Mrs. Johnson but... ours was Mrs. Hale!!!! lol

  • One of my all time favorite songs, and I'm old enough to remember singing along to it on AM radio.

  • Sums up Christianity in a nutshell without all of the extra wank supplied by atheist 'intellectuals'............

  • I've always completely hated country music, but this has got something to it. Maybe its just the popular crap today. Just like rock, rap, and pretty much any other genre. If you go back to the roots, its all raw and sounds much better than todays hermetically sealed garbage.

  • this is one of the best songs i have ever heard!

  • This used to be played regularly on the old Truckin' Bozo Show on WLW that ran from midnight-5 a.m.

    Great song.

  • where is the play button? I love this song and there is no way to hear it

  • He means for the hypocrite to shut it down.ROBERT

  • Is it just me or does he look like he could be John Elways dad?

  • need this as a ringtone

  • Talent like this is very much missed these days!

  • Now this is country at it's best. They just do not make them like this anymore. The performers of today would not know what to do without all the extra's that they use today. It used to be where you actually had TALENT.

  • Apparently those people that dislike this song are Sunday school teachers.

  • great song wich is also on the porter wagonner show 20 vol dvd set an what a great set it is

  • I think the point of this song is "judge not, lest ye be judged". The Creator doesn't need Mrs. Johnson's help in judging His creations. Leave that to Him.

  • @MrVidSnooper Yeah, you know it!

  • its not that he couldn't, he wouldn't

  • sweet tune

  • 6 people dont know the lord knows there drinkin

  • Comment removed

  • Great song. good comeback to all do good gossip spreaders.

  • All I have to say is the radio verson is better with the female choir repeating the chours as if in church.

  • its a song you dopw theres no harm in it it brings me back to my child hood to from thispoint

  • but God and I will have a good talk tonight, Amen

  • a great song for those that can't mind their own business

  • Is that an Epiphone?

  • We need many more songs like this. There are far too many self-righteous people nowdays who are so quick to judge someone else but have a huge problem taking a long, hard, look in the mirror. Thank you for this awesome piece of music Cal..!!

  • @52Mik Funnily enough, it's a common thing among atheists and anti-Christians to criticize us for being sinners. I stand guilty as charged. No one isn't a sinner. You have to be for Jesus's message to be worth anything to you. :) He came to wipe away sin and to make up for our human imperfections.

Hm. If Mrs. Johnson is so perfect, perhaps she doesn't need to go to Heaven then. ^.^

  • keep them coming.

  • keep er lit my friend.

  • This brings back so many memories. This was my Grandad Tatum's favorite song when this came out. He used to keep a whiskey stash hidden out in the shed and take a little nip upon occasion. Sometimes my Grandma Tatum would catch him and she'd give him grief for hours or even days. Thanks for posting this!

  • Good words to hypocrites...

  • I heard that Bill Anderson wrote this tune on a napkin in a Nashville restaurant when a nosey woman came in to find out what he was doing having dinner with a certain lady.

  • dont judge my vices untill you have none of your own. wait, being judgemental and hipocritical are both HUGE vices..

    CHEERS!

  • dont judge my vices untill you have none of your own. wait, being judgemental is a HUGE vice..

    CHEERS!

  • yet another classic by Mr. Smith.. i love it!

  • My all time favorite song.

  • @MegaGrizz123

I don't know about that MegaGrizz, It's a toss up between this song and Jeannie C. Riley's "Harper Valley PTA" another thorn in the side of hypocrites everywhere. Personally; I Love em both!!

  • @52Mik Don't forget about Hank Williams Sr.'s Mind your own business. "Well if you mind your business then you sure won't be mindin' mine."

  • @Yeoolies You are right. I did forget about that one. Great song also. Jeannie also did another less popular song called "Satan Place" that is along the same lines. I'm sure there are more but can't think of them at present. Having a senior moment>>>lol lol.

  • I LOVE CAL SMITH......

  • this has been a favorite since hearing it as a kid in the 70's. such a great job by Cal Smith, as well as the fact that most people either relate to it, or know a "Mrs. Johnson" they'd love to tell off in the same way. makes me smile every time i hear it. thanks for sharing!

  • if there less Mrs. Johnsons in this world itd be a better place 1000 fold

  • Why did Cal Smith's career tailspin after Country Bumpkin? I don't understand how someone with his talent can go from 0 to 60 and spin out.

  • @flashbell

Well, "Country Bumpkin" was his biggest hit, no doubt, but he had hits on into the late '70s. One that comes immediately to mind is "Come See About Me", a duet he recorded with Conway Twitty in 1977.

  • Why did Cal Smith's career tailspin after Country Bumpkin? I don't understand how someone with his talent can go from 0 to 60 and spin out

  • I'm not sure, but I always saw in this song an old love. As in, between the drinker and Mrs. Johnson. And she still loves him, and he knows. So he mentioned the 'pretty young lass' to rub it in somewhat. Maybe he still loves her, but they've hurt each other in the past. Maybe he sees her concern for him as 'preaching.'

Like I said, I'm not sure, but I like to think this is the case. It's almost romantic this way.

  • @nellowys

I never really thought of "Mrs. Johnson" as an old love. I always took the song at face value. Maybe the narrator in this song is someone that "Mrs. Johnson" perceives as a thorn in her side, an errant church member just like the song says.

  • this song straightens me right out, where i work there is nothin but grown men tadling on each other all day and itrs nice to see what another person would do when dealin with brown nosers. KEEP YOUR NOSE WHERE ITS BELONGS MRS. JOHNSON

  • What a great Testament! We all have our own Journey in this life, and no one should be pointing out anyone's iniquities--The Lord knows them already--and He doesn't need you to tell him...

  • i agree got to love that smile ohh and the music

  • love cals smile...............gorgous!!!!!

  • Five bucks says he's from Oklahoma!

  • @TheHonestMann

He is from Oakland, California. He is an Oakie transplant and, last I heard, is in Missouri. He is my second cousin.

  • @Aggrosj

Hats off from Canada! My son harvested wheat in Oklahoma. Some of the kindest folks in the USA!!

  • @TheHonestMann He's is, but I doubt he remembers much of it. His family moved to Oakland when he was an infant - he was raised there and played the bar circuit in San Francisco & Oakland for many years till Ernest Tubb discovered him and asked him to join his band.

  • My dad is Mrs.Johnson

  • My sister is one of those self riteous bitches that cal sings about. She drove her husband and many others to drinking with her loud mouth.

  • How many times have I felt like saying something like this to the people around me...............countless.

  • Cal smith says so much with very little movement. He was great!

  • @fromthispoint Why listen to country music? I got one for you look up Louvin Bros. Knoxville Girl.

  • This is true classic country music at its best.Great song and artist.

  • What if someone dont live until later tonight and dont get that good talk in with the lord? everyone is just a heart beat away from death ,,,,so if you know your doing wrong stop it rite now dont waite until the next minate you may not be alive to waite until later tonight, But if Miss Johnston is judgeing you and doing the same thing you are then Miss Johnston and you need to pray rite now dont waite ...you could not be alive in the next hour....this song was missleading to many people .

  • @fromthispoint good grief lady this is a place to listen to songs, not preach sermons.

  • @Yeoolies new wine, not old wine, what's the difference you say ?, old wine is fermented, new wine is not, you see, you need to ferment the sugar to turn to alcohol, but i wouldn't really know, being from rural southern kentucky , where some of my family tends to distill corn liquor, get er' did young man

  • @knoxcountykyman1 of course, everybody knows jesus' super powers couldn't have turned water into already fermented wine. that would be ridiculous.

  • @Yeoolies

Apparently YOU never read the book...nowhere in the BIBLE does it say Jesus drank! But this is a good song and has nothing to do with that...just a fun song...but you're dumb and wouldn't know.

  • can anyone send me this song? Ive been looking for it forever now haha

  • love it

  • Country music at it's finest! Graet song. Timeless....

  • Mrs. Johnsonson needs a high hard one! XD

  • This is REAL country ! Lord knows I'm drinkin' right now...

  • I love it.

  • GREAT song; five stars!

  • I love this!

  • Excellent!! This stuff from the late 60's and throughout the 70's puts todays country to shame.

  • This is a song I have liked since I first heard it and it continues to be a great one...

  • this is country !!!! country today sucks !!!!

  • Oh yes, the old country music that I grew up with. Just love it.. Still have the bitty's around - just mindin' everybody else's business but their own!
