Ants build hills, termites mounds. Our self-organized paradise, conceived in the minds of gray men, were houses upon houses, sundered from the heart of the city, as if to touch one another were a grave disease.
I get such a nostalgic feeling when I hear this song. It's like the song takes me to a different time period of my ancestors. I dunno call me weird but that's just my take on it.
i started listening to them a long time ago but i guess sometimes it just takes some time to figure out how awesome a song really is, now this is on repeat for 2 days haha
I still remember the first time I heard this song. The moment I heard the first couple of chords I knew that I absolutely loved it. I can't describe how immediate the affect was. It was unconditional love at first listen. That was in October of 2010, and this is still one of my favorite songs of all time.
This song reminds me some much of my best friend a couple of years ago back in high school. We lived in these god awful suburbs in Dallas, and we thought it would be cool to grow our hair, and always tried to find something fun to do(which was hard) but sadly he joined the Army, and we lost contact, but why would canadian bands(rush and AF) hate the suburbs; all the houses look the same, all the stores are the same, all the people are the same, wait nevermind
@MrticTac921 Not every song on The Suburbs is anti-suburbs, and not this one. BTW I often wondered if 'you cut your hair, I never saw you again' is not a style statement but a reference to joining the army and becoming a casualty. If it is then perhaps Win is still in Neon Bible territory. Which wouldn't be a bad thing.
@ManinManchester Nice way of looking at it. I think it is a style statement but I also see what you mean, has made me see the song in a different way. xx
This song has messed me up... It reminds me on my past and it wakes my nostalgic side. Perfect synthesis of lyrics and melodic is so breathtaking and heart touching and AF proved again that they can touch my string and I'm thankful for that. I wish I could express my feelings to one special person through this song and hope that this song's energy and atmosphere will reach her. Thank you Arcade Fire, thank you guys for listening to good song and thank you special person for your existence.
This song is universal... i'm from Colombia, i don't know what the hell a suburb looks like -except or movies-. But it simply brings me back... to somewhere...
@Mozbrada Is there a Smiths/Arcade Fire similarity that I am just not hearing, because my best mate also loves Arcade Fire and The Smiths. Personally I don't like Morrissey or the Smiths, but Arcade Fire are so awesome :P
@UniverseIsPacman Hahaha I see no similarities either (sound wise) other than both bands are filled with lyrical geniuses (in my opinion). They both provide meaningful worthy music to me.
@Mozbrada I definitely agree, I mean I wouldn't characterise The Smith's music as unmeaningful not by a long shot, I just find it irrepressibly depressing and cannot enjoy it on the whole. That having been said I do like, 'How Soon is Now' leastways I think that's the song I like, I don't listen to them very often so I may be forgetting the name tbh.
Damn song describing my first real relationship!! Fuck being brought back to that.. Great song however :) gonna have to find more arcade fire maybe if all the lyrics are like this. musically this song is a tad empty at times but i love the sound and stuff.
@theocho666 I believe it's open to interpretation, but I see that section (3:19-4:30) to be that "war". The suburbs appear to be so tame, so boring, nothing rebellious. And that section (could) represent that breaking away.
@windstarford Never heard it played in the UK though Ready to Start and We Used to Wait are popular on alt and occasionally the BBC. Just proves how lazy some radio DJs can be.
Love the fact that "war" in the context of a suburban semi-charmed life isn't that tragic, the themes play out with much simpler things like music choices and circles of friends and dress shirts and haircuts. This album is brilliant.
This summer I discovered how much I enjoy riding through my suburban town on my bike. This summer I also discovered the Suburbs by Arcade Fire. Combining the two is absolute perfection. Thank you Arcade Fire! :)
This is just so beautiful. I remember when me and my friends were teenagers... we were sitting in a bar and one strange guy came in and told us... enjoy the times you are together, because when the high school ends you will split up and nothing will be like its now. ... he was right, the high school ends, and only nostalgy remains. It was the great times, when we were together, enjoys our music... till everyone left... greetings from slovakia !
"The music divides us in to tribes. You choose your side, I'll choose my side" GOOSEBUMPS. Actually reminds of all the Gaga freaks who took the internet by storm when Arcade Fire won for best album. I'm on team music!
@shootgoats But it's also reminiscent of the Arcade Fire fans putting down popular music, acting as if their love of Indie music makes them better than the next person. I think Arcade Fire is consciously addressing their own fan base, subtly admonishing them for pretentiousness. Great song, by the way.
Hmmm, I was just going to post that while I love this song the "choose your side I'll choose my side" theme is pretty silly but when taken from your point of view it makes sense.
@pancakeofdestiny just to throw it out there, judging from their music video for the song "the suburbs" which is pretty similar (some lyrics even the same) i figured the 'sides' thing was about being one of the kids who was ignorrant to life outside the fenced in *safe* suburbs, vs. being aware of that (In the context of the video)
@pancakeofdestiny Interesting point. But you can't disagree that what Lady Gaga fans displayed afterwards was embarrassing. I'm quite open to all music - you should see my collection. Great song indeed. Cheers.
