Because English is the current international language, so people who do not have it as their mother tongue need to learn it for various purposes (mainly business, but also travels).

If French was still the "big" language as it was a few centuries ago in Europe, for example, native English speakers (US or other) would probably learn it as a second language, for the same reasons.

Learning a foreign language is a good way to learn more about your own, though, and to open to other cultures.
