I always see a lot of complaining about gentrification and corporations on any video profiling Seattle. Hate to say it, but things change and that's life. Is Sunset BLVD in LA the Sunset of the 80's? NO. Is Haight/Ashbury the Haight/Ashbury of the 60's? NO. That's the way it goes. Artistic hotbeds have their moment in the sun and they fade to somewhere else - it's not always because of "condos" and "greedy businessmen". LOL, and some of us grow up and get jobs too. CH is still VERY cool.
I live on Capitol Hill and it's not where people go to "score". I'm sure that kind of thing happens, I'm not naive, but it's a great area to live in. I feel safe (north of Olive, that is, after dark). Vivace FTW!
When my dad was alive he lived on Capitol back in the mid 80's to very early 90's. When i was a kid back then and we would go walk around I remember seeing mostly punk rockers etc. When did this change? Also, does anyone remember Pagliacci's Pizza?

but...now it's like every other part of Seattle.... a gentrified vanilla suburban experience with super bitchy merchants and PC up tight know it all liberal mannequins armed with hot lattes and blackberrys. then add some Grey overcast and an unrelenting drizzle for 8 months out of the year.
need to update-Bailey Books is gone. in response to below--never seen sex in the bushes at Volunteer-maybe late at night-have seen a few homeless crawl out-a little boring otherwise-they need a dog park there. housing is overpriced crap. pretty dumpy actually.
Volunteer park is the "heart" if you mean a lot of gay guys meet in the bushes. But it's ok.
I get major street cred when I walk around with my faded copy of Das Kapital, on the way to my astrology reading/yoga/man's group seminar with a slightly vacuous non-judgmental, sensitive stare...
