This song has inspired me to go drive across the nation. Well, that is, made me have an undeniable passion to do so. If it happens, it happens, if not, well, I'll just make my place in the hills.
And of all the comments about what it's about, well, it's said right in the lyrics:
you people need to learn how to analyze things from an ambiguous perspective. He's not talking about utah or the bible, he's talking about the rock and roll myth of the open road as an escape from pain or boredom (listen to thunder road by springsteen or you don't know how it feels by tom petty if you're still confused).
moab is obviously important because its out west, where these fantasies (rt. 66) took place, its status as a bible story just adds resonance to its mythological importance.
What the hell does Moab have to do with Route 66? If you're going to spout off as if you're some kind of expert try to stick to a topic that you know something about.
This song isn't "Turn the Page" - it isn't about the trials of taking the show on the road. It's about leaving an old life behind and starting over somewhere else that is completely new, someplace that will reinvent you, and shake off all the remnants and debris that has become part of you.
It's about hitting the road to get become someone else, it is NOT about hitting the road to play music, and Moab was never a destination for Route 66ers...it's a desert escape for granola hippies who reject the City and all of it's modern synthetic roboticism.

i'm in agreeance with DerowEgen. I'm not sure if it's the fact he seems to have learnt to sing, or the music itself isn't as edgy. Lyrics are still good but the packaging of them is important. I did think that Cassadaga was pretty poor though too.
haha, i'm kinda surprised, i'd have expected harsher comments, but you really think this even comes anywhere near 'Lover I Don't Have To Love', 'Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh' or 'Amy In The White Coat'? Cos if you do, well then you sir, are entitled to your opinion.
people change and write new things. and its sometimes good to sound different from the lprevious albums. his music's evolved and keeps getting better.
This isn't Bright Eyes. If you wanted Bright Eyes, then listen to Bright Eyes. It says right there in the title who it is. Don't expect for him to do exactly the same as he had been doing.
I just love his music, it's so happy and feel good. Or at least what I've heard so far. I just recently started listening to him/Bright Eyes and I'm so glad I did, it makes me feel awesome and giddy. :D
No, I know he's really emotional and..well, sad back in the Bright Eyes days, but it still makes me feel extremely happy, and I don't know why. All of his "sad songs," and Bright Eyes' songs, actally make me feel like hugging everyone, and..I dunno. Ya know? Hahaha.
you can hate me but just love me in return...

Best lyric - So from 1-10, 10 is exactly what I am, zero being everything I'm not, tell me what you like? Is it less than 5?
Wow.

In my opinion.

My crackpot theory is that he's referring to Massive Ordnance Air Blast weaponry. Yup.

Honestly, I think this song is talking about how Elimelech and Naomi, in the bible, traveled to Moab (Jordan) when times in Judah became too hard.

I live in Moab, Utah and this song has absolutely nothing to do with this canyon country tourist hub.

I love this:
"So from 1 to 10, 10's exactly what I am, 0 being everything I'm not. So tell me what you like; is it less than 5?"
Lyrically he's always been amazing on every album. It's just the sound that changes.

Really? You're in for a nasty surprise when you reach his earlier stuff. I am glad, however, that he seems more cheerful these days.
