It is being overlooked that SS of Mtn is a country song - it was Hawkshaw Hawkins' theme song for Pete's sake - checkout the original (w/great electric guitar break). And for the record, I love the banjo players work - he's not trying to be JDCrowe (what would be the point of that?) - does anyone know his name?
@dukeofearlbanjo Dude where is your banjo solo? Any vid of you on Youtube? You know the old saying..opionions are like******** everybodys got one.....Just sayin.
The Osborne Bros. version is great, but Jimmy Martin's version is the gold standard, IMHO.
lovdanig, I liked your comment about the "bluegrass police". What's funny is that Jimmy Martin loved electric guitars and rhythm. He took a lot of grief for it, too. But he was a wild s.o.b. who did his own thing, kept coon dogs in his yard, and told critics to kiss his ass. Just like you did. Good on you!
BEFORE the "Bluegrass Police" were around my Dad and myself played in a band with a Fiddle,Banjo,Electric guitar, flattop guitar,ELECTRIC Bassor Upright depending on what bass player brought that night,We all respected each other, this was when Gibsons were still good flat tops even tho my Dad had a 1935 D-28 Martin,THese ASSHOLES make me PUKE most have bigger mouths than brawn I invited one outside after he made a remark about my electric bass everyone liked until he came! Bluegrass Police,Hehheh
Oh good grief...the bluegrass police have sure done a number in the comments section here. Why not just appreciate it as a song, rather than as some test of whether it's "true" bluegrass? At any rate, the real problem is that Dwight's voice sounds like shit. Maybe he had a head cold during this song.
I am a BIG BIG fan of the UPRIGHT bass and that of corse is what made this whole version doable, an electric would have ruined it from the start.
If it's not an upright it's not a country or a bluegrass band, PERIOD. It's obvious that these guys are NOT weathered bluegrass musisians accept the bass player he is the real one here, and without him this song would have sucked.
It's weak ass grass because he isn't attempting bluegrass. He's just singing a bluegrass song with what he's got. His guitarist probably didn't even play the mandolin until he hooked up with Dwight.
Btw, I am loving the new sound. It's rockier, yet more traditional at the same time. I'm not really a fan of the upright bass, but the guitarist more than makes up for it. Nothing against Pete Anderson, but Dwight needed a change. The last two albums have been fantastic.
This song is kind of hard to sing becuase of the sycopation, so give him the benefit of the doubt. It is weak grass though. Were the hell is the harmony on the chorus? Wheres the damn fiddle? Jimmy is rolling over in his grave or atleast cussing up a storm.
The version he does with Vasser and Nitty Gritty on the Circle album is f-ing perfect. Jimmy is like Hank.... you can do your own version of their songs, but it will be 50 proof.
Jesus ya'll are puttin to much thought into it...its a Jimmy Martin song...old school grass. Dwight did it and dwight is a country singer not a bluegrass artist.
You're damn right that says it all. However, Johnny didn't say anything we don't already know. Nobody but nobody can compare with either of these giants.
His voice is better than ever, compelling and a little more edgy each year....yet his trademark sound seems to have found more of that hard core country sound I look for , if that's possible..He is brutal in his recreation of these legendary songs...Dwight's voice is the texture I like to hear in country...sustained brillance!!!! Dwight could " make my day".

I think Dwight has always played a Martin (since the 80's when I first saw him anyhow) and I agree with jtraske, it's weak bluegrass.

Yes, he needs to record a bluegrass album ASAP. He should do some more recordings with Ralph Stanley too, they sound great together.
