"We cannot rely upon scripture solely..." The issue for me is why not? If Christianity is based upon the infallible Word of God, then why do we have to supplement the scriptures with interpretation and envision what was being said and the intent of it writers? The Apostle Paul in his 2nd Epistle to Timothy chapter 3 verses 16 wrote, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. Did it not? TRUTH!
This is a great debate; however, my concerns are over the biblical interpretive approach of most people not being consistent with what God and the human authors of scripture intended. It's really sad when men approach scripture as if they have no regard for what God and His human authors intended to the groups to whom they were writing initially. There's something to be said about Paul's counsel to his son in the gospel, Timothy, when encouraging him to RIGHTLY DIVIDE the word of truth.
Thank GOD, for Bishop Harry Jackson. Who speaks the UNCOMPROMISING WORD. Those who compromise and take away fro GOD's word, DO NOT KNOW GOD. CHRIST tells us there will be many who say they have done works in CHRIST's name and HE will reply that HE never knew them.
This to me is a non-issue. If you don't agree with marriage equality, don't marry someone of the same sex! As a school teacher, I don't ever recall reading/citing the words..."with liberty and justice for ALL" and seeing the word, "except". Separate but equal does not, has not and should not work. We can not "eenie meenie miney moe" through our neighborhoods and point to who is allowed marriage or not. As a christian and American, I am for equality, love, and acceptance for all human life.
Yes, Minister Irene. You are an amazing thinker and preacher. I can't wait to be able to hear you preach again........All my brothers and sisters you should watch this debate.
Anyone who DARE say they read in the bible that same sex couple should NOT marry is a DAMN liar! In fact the opposite is revealed in 1 Tim 4:1-3 wherein Paul prophesied that in THE LAST DAYS we will be forbidden to marry AS WE CAN CLEARLY SEE now with all the opposition against gay marriage! Also Jesus does not hate gays or object to gay relationship as the church FALSELY teaches! In fact Jesus taught a TOTAL different thing BUT the Church is too hypocritical to acknowledge & accept the truth!
News Flash: Gay Marriage is the only political issue black religious conservatives have addressed in the last ten years!
Meanwhile, in the African-American community only 31% of adult blacks get married, and 70% of all children are born to single unwed-mothers.
Black religious conservatives should be ashamed of themselves, and need to be called out. They need to worry about the pitiful marriage rate -- the state of the family -- in their own damned community. Pride goes before a fall!
Civil Marriage should be opened up for two people regardless of sex. I mean, it's civil marriage. Religious marriages would marry or not marry but what legislators are legislating about, and what courts are ruling on is not religious marriages but on civil marriages. Why is this so difficult to understand?
The state is not there to issue love licensesthe main purpose of civil marriage is to produce and develop children and insert them in the legal system in order to sustain and maintain society through the future. the same reason we don't allow same sex marriage is the same reason we don't allow incest and polygamist marriages. this is why its a privilege, hence the word "license",because the state does have a right to discriminate against those type of relationships for legitimate state interests
Nice opinion. But those are not facts. An old man and an old woman can currently marry and a man can marry a woman regardless of his or her fertility......incest and polygamist marriages are VERY different because the issue of consent. However two sane, adults can consent without coercion from muslim/mormon doctrine or lack of consent due to mental immaturity (like in incest).
Civil Marriage is one thing. Religious Marriage is another thing. Interfaith couples that are straight and can't get religiously married unless one of them converts can still get married through Civil Marriage.
The 'good thing': Rev. Irene Monroe put it so eloquently that anyone who wasn't a block-head could understand it. The 'bad thing': She was talking to Charlie Brown.
Jesus said deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow me. let not your will be done but mine. So that should end the conversation right their. If you follow Him first your heart will change and your whole paradigm will as well.
I normally find Bishop Harry Jackson unbearable but I could understand where he is coming from with how he interprets his faith. I think his civility here is a testament to Reverend Irene Monroe who is a beautiful woman with a great temperament and disposition.
She was beautiful in her responses and point of view.
