I'm teaching my 9 month old border collie, Tessa, this trick and she is having trouble targeting both of her paws to my feet at the same time. If I ask her to target one paw to my foot while she has her other paw on my other foot, she will move her paw that was already in place. We have been stuck on this step for awhile, do you have any suggestions?
I love this video. I am training this to my dog right now. Will post a video when we are done. This is really such a cool trick. What command do you use for it?
Thanks for this video! I started with wide flat slippers thinking they would make a larger target. After switching to runners, I found it easier for the dogs to stand on as it is a firmer surface. Just thought this might be a helpful tip for someone! LOL!
@zsianz1 We've been having a blast training this today! It's interesting how each dog 'got it' in her own way. Despite being the same height and only 10lbs difference in weight, they each feel very different on my feet and fit differently between my knees. Love this!
thanks always great to see others do things and I tell my puppy people to look at utube as it is so helpful I will certainly get others to look at your channel
@ZebraZ1234 I like to have my other pups in the room while I train but it's down to personal choice, I don't find that they get confused about the clicks, they understand that when it's their turn the click is for them and when it's not their turn it means nothing. I have a video: I have a video "how to get a dog to stay back while another dog trains" which is a tutorial on how to get other dogs to stay back :)
i love love LOVE your vids! they are extremely helpful! and do you have any tips on border collies? were getting a 8 week old puppy soon and i would like to be prepared. thanks!
@Hmenzi222 just to make sure you puppy proof your house (make sure ALL wires are out of reach of the puppy, because odds on a BC puppy will chew!) and think about maybe doing something fun like agility or something to keep them busy, oh and don't think your BC will EVER let you slack off! hehe! they keep you on your toes 24/7, that's the whole fun of them though :) enjoy your puppy :)
How long did it take you to do this? I was thinking about training my border collie german shepherd mix this as she gets really anxious when she is not learning something haha
You are really good at this! :) Good jobb whit the dogs! They are sooo sweeeet! :3 I traind my sheltie youre way whit this trix and she got it in 7 min :)
Hi, I'm dutch so my english is not perfect, but I see you are training your dog with another dog staying in the same room, I'm doing that to, but one of them is à draf dog so hè is used to lightning flits and the other dog the clicker, but some people saus, you can't have another clicker trained animal around, but I'm not sure of that, I thinking I would try it to if I had to hearing dogs!
She is so beautiful! and you are amazing!! i'm getting a border collie on january, a black and white baby girl and i'm sooo going to get a clicker and follow your videos :) congratulations!
Sian - Hi. I am teaching my pit/boxer mix your feet on mine. I can straddle him and he firmly places and keeps his left foot on my left foot. I am a bit at a loss on how to get him to put his right foot on my right foot. When I start over from the very beggining to try and get him to target his right paw on a cassette tape or wallet, he still uses his left paw. Any suggestions?
@milosteven this can happen if you only reward one paw when you start training the targeting. I would suggest that you start from scratch in a different room with a different object to target and don't use any of the cue words you have used in the past, a change of location and object might get you somewhere. Reward ANY movement of the right paw also, don't wait for him to target if he's not offering that then make sure you catch any movement of the correct paw. what happens if you wait him out?
@zsianz1 Thanks - I have started over as you suggested. He will now target with his left paw with the cassette on the left and with his right paw when it is on his right. Will keep working with him a little bit a time. It may take awhile, but we keep at. Thanks for your suggestion. I will send you a video once we finish, but it will be a while.
@milosteven that's good progress. I would suggest that you very heavily reward any tiny pushes off the ground with the second foot when he already has one on your foot. you can also hold a treat to his nose and move it about to shift his weight and cause him to lift his second foot up. keep at it, I'll look forward to a video in the future :-)
Amazing! I have a border collie myself, and was looking for new tricks, so thank you very much for the idea and for your great video! We started at once, and worked it out to have one foot standing on mine in about 5 minutes? Borders are just incredible :)
Found your channel from the link in Kikopup's 'Cop-Cop' video. Have now subscribed! I loved watching your other dog in the background s/he starts off so interested, 'I could do that! I could do that!', then creeps forward a bit tentatively 'I ~could~ do that', and then on the sofa almost bored, 'Well of course I could do that but who's asking ~me~?' LOL!
Is it possible to teach a dog this trick if they are used to targeting with their nose? How do you teach them to distinguish paw targeting and nose targeting?
@deadonekazi yes, my dogs know both. look at them like totally different tricks, use a different object and if your dog is getting confused then train it in another room (putting the dog into a different situation might help) check out my video on "High Five Clicker Style" for more tips on training targeting with the paw. hope that helps :-)
I was so fun to watch this again, thanks to Pam for posting! I think Mi might actually be up to learning this now. How long did it take Mabel to learn? **************!
@tehrenberg oooh, sorry for the late reply tracy!! if took Mabs about 3 weeks, I didn't train every day on this though, I like to train something new a lot for a few days until they have the idea and then have a break from training it and go back after a week or so, it's just a routine I have got into with it. I might add that this took Biddy less than a day to learn!!! and took Holly a couple of months, it seems like it just depends on the dog! I'm training Vinnie this now, or trying to :D
Excellent...love this trick one of Inca' favs. although have to say i started training this trick with my feet already in my shoes...lol! Its great once they get the hang of this trick you can walk together forwards, backwards & round the bend..its so cool:)
it's hard to say because I trained it on and off but she had it down pretty good in a couple of weeks, but I didn't train it every single day. the hardest part is to get BOTH their feet on yours at the same time, after that it's pretty easy going :-)
oh ok thanks thats reli helpfull im goona try and train it but i like gettign tricks done within like an hour but ohvuesly it doesnt work like that. your videos are so helpful. do u thin you could do this trick well i have a rabbit and its so hard for me to catch it and i want chase to kinda heard it for me like chase it towards like a corner where i go one side he waits the other side so i can catch lol! and i want to knw how to teach beg .
hey! I'm not sure that I would recommend this with your rabbit, however if you would like to train beg then I have a tutorial on this, how to train sit pretty/beg. hope it's a help :-)
I simply say "in between" for her to spin and back up between my legs and then "on my feet" but she follows the visual cue of me turning my feet in also.
Hi, thank you for your comment :-) I have posted a reply on the comments on my channel, you can find it by clicking on my icon picture and looking through the comments. hope it helps and get in touch if you have any more questions :-)
wow! great video! i will try it also with my border Lana. What food do you use for treats? I am affraid that if will give her to many treets she will get overweight.
I use real meat, beef, chicken or ham or liver. I take the amount of treats I use out of their meals so as they don't over eat, I only do this when I'm doing a lot of training though. thank you for your nice comment.
This is such a creative trick for dogs. But when my dog out's his paw on my shoe he takes it off again. Do you know how to solve this problem? Please reply, thank you. ;-)
click as soon as your dog puts it's paw on your foot, keep doing this over and over and over, reward with repeated treats if your dog keeps it's foot there slightly longer (this should happen given enough time) you could also try waiting a fraction longer each time he pops his paw on your foot before you click. last idea is get some squirty cheese (cheese in a tube) and when your dog is touching your foot squeeze the cheese gently into his mouth and when he removes his foot remove the cheese!
FINALLY!!!! Someone who knows how to create an INSTRUCTIONAL video on the process of teaching the trick rather than just showing off that their dog can do it. You, my dear, are truly an inspiration and tremendous help to me and others still learning to teach our dogs new tricks. Thank you ever so much for being so kind in doing this. God Bless You and your precious doggies.
Wow!! Is still lovely training or what!! I would rate your videos 10 stars if that was possible. You are such an excellent dog trainer! I wish to be like you some day!!
It is one thing to watch a trick, but to have the learning technique explained is of far greater value to dog owners want ing to teach their dogs what they have seen. Thank you. My dog Sarah (Durkee) is going to love this. She climbs trees. (I put her on her leash and then put her ball in the tree) She also walks on pipes. She fell off the first couple of times, and still does occasionally but she loves it.
Do you have a video on how to use the clicker? Thank you so much. Thank you
hey, thanks for your nice comment :-) When I turn my feet in when she is between my legs this works as a non verbal cue and then I say 'hop on' but I think she uses the feet turning in as her cue more than the verbal cue :-)
Awesome videos! I've been watching them all - and it's very inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos, edit them, and post them! You work so hard with your dogs!! :) I'll definitely be checking out all of the tricks you post.. thanks again.
thank you so much, it means so much to me when people take the time to watch, comment, rate and/or subscribe to my videos. I really appreciate your encouraging words :-)
Hey, I find it hard to put a time frame on it because I never know when to call a trick finished! I'm still working on this now to get her to stay on for longer and longer and in different places with distractions and with less treats! to get to the stage at the end of the video took around 2 weeks though.
that was great!! Your dogs are really sooo smart, I love it!! I just got my pup to do 360's pivoting an a book thnx to kikopup's video, that took a week or two, (the hardest part was gettingn her to keep both paws on the book, once she got that concept, spinning was easy),this is so the next BIG trick we learn, how long was that start to finish a few days or longer? I think since we've been working on paw placement this will be a good one to move on to...THANKS AS ALWAYS!!
thank you so much for your lovely comment! I always find it hard to put a time frame on a trick as when do you call a trick 'done' I'm still working on this trick now, in different places and keep going without a treat and going backwards too. it took the longest to get her to place both feet on mine, about a week of 2-3 training sessions of 5 minutes a day. I had been training this for around 2-3 weeks at the time of this video. but some dogs will pick it up faster and some slower.
THANKS! I know what you mean "done" ...phhh, some days my pup would fetch the moon if I asked...some days, I can't get her to sit! still, thats exactly what I was wondering,,It took 10 min to take my dog to spin in circles, or 3-4 lures around me till she understood 'circle me' perfectly...this looked like what i call a "big" trick,, where it can take weeks just for the dog to "get it" never mind be reliable doing it, forget w/out treats! THNXS YOU! & i'll let ya know how it goes!
I would just like to let ppl know that you can also 'mark' the desired behaviour by saying a particular word when the dog does something right instead of using the clicker. I say 'YES'.
Also, I wanted to ask if you came up with the paws on feet thing yourself.
good point, so long as you say it the same way each time marking the behaviour with 'YES' works too!
I got the idea for the trick from a video by yolle555 here on youtube, she did it in a couple of videos (I have no idea if she was the first to do this trick) I had no idea how to train it so I played around with a few ideas and found this way to work best so I thought I would share with other people. I really wanted this to be a video response to yolle555 but she didn't accept :-(
good question! the click marks the behaviour at the moment it happens, there are times when the dog will only offer a behaviour for a second and that's when you should click. you always follow a click with a treat and the dog comes to realize that whatever they were doing at the moment they heard the click was the right thing and they have earned a treat. it's very hard to feed a dog a treat the second they are doing the right thing so the clicker makes things easier!
Oh my goodness Sian!!! I cant tell you how brilliant this is!! Your such a talented trainer, thank you so much for making this, im going to try it with Samson :)
Ooh and Holly and Mabel are stunning! I love how Holly sits in the background :) 5* and *favs* xxxxx
Ah! I've got the point where Sparky is standing between my legs and he'll stand on one or the other foot but when I try and get him to do both he removes the one he has on before moving the other! Help?
Does Mabel offer to stand on your feet at all sorts of times and places? Jett does, I don't discourage it and am glad he feels comfortable enough to do it:) Do you remember I mentioned it seemed to be taking him some time to understand hind end movement? He's got it now! I stepped up the times we tried it to several times per day for a few clicks instead of once daily and that helped alot. Thanks again for all your videos/help:)
yes she does! it really hurts when I have bare feet but I don't like to ask her to get off because she thinks she is doing a good thing! I just sweat it out and have scratched feet! haha! oh, well done on your breakthrough, yes doing shorter and more frequent training sessions is a great way to get more out of the time you spend training! keep up the good work :-)
it's going to be a bit more difficult to train a smaller dog this but as you have to bend over quite far anyway to point at your shoe I don't think it would be too different. I think smaller steps would be in order though!! the youtube user WinnietheCorgi has this trick on her tricks video and her Corgi does a great job so you might want to check that out :-)
ok, this is great! I have been working with my puppy Jett, now 6 mo. old already! He loves to target my feet and will really stick! Also he walks forward with me between my legs, has one paw on my foot, now working on both, perfect timing with your video! Thanks for another great one:)
Love love love this! Can't wait to see more from your channel.... this was my "maiden voyage". Thanks for the inspiration. And very nice that you gave credit to your fellow trainer for the idea :-) Keep it coming!
ohh look at how big & smart our little Mable had grown :) you're really doing grreat with her! ohh every video just amazed me :) I will definitely try this on Happy after my stitches can be taken out. haha. I saw Holly was behind & wondering.. is it my turn yet! haha :P keep the videos coming~~ =)
This video has given me a good chance to look at Mabel's eyes, they are beautiful!! I love her face so much, it's so sweet and I love that blue/gray coloring. :)
What a splendid way to teach your dog how to walk with it's paws on yours! I'm sure many people including myself will find this video to come in handy. :) I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you are a fantastic dog trainer!
Absolutely FANTASTIC!! Very clever way to break down this trick. The standing with your feet inward was a wonderful tip ;) Mabel is gorgeous, she has the perfect border collie ears (I love the rose ears, they are just too cute! ) Wonderful song choice aswell, I love that song. 5* ~Heather and Jesse~
thank you so much Heather! it took me quite a while to realize that turning my feet in would help, I tried leaning this way and that to encourage her to put her other foot up and all I had to do was turn my feet in! haha!
Oooh that was so cool, Mabel is very clever and I love the end walking up the hall, it was terrific!! I also loved near the start Holly watching on the floor, quietly trying to edge up a little!! Well done, 5 ***** : ).......I don't think Banjo's feet would reach that far......haha!!
hehe, it's funny how Holly sits and watches, she won't leave the room when Mabel is training but she never interferes, bless her. thanks so much for your lovely comment :-)
Very good tutorial, Sian! Mabel does a great job with this trick! It took me forever to teach Ricky, but I didn't do the foot target. That's a great idea! Ricky can do it but not nearly as well as Mabel!
5* and a fav! I started teaching this to Kaine ahile back using foot targeting, but we never took it any further than that. I will be sure to practice this with Kaine for sure and post a video response hopefully soon:). Mabel is getting so big! Fantastic tutorial and you are a pawsome trainer!
Wow awesome! Whats the song btw???

Hi Sian,
I'm teaching my 9 month old border collie, Tessa, this trick and she is having trouble targeting both of her paws to my feet at the same time. If I ask her to target one paw to my foot while she has her other paw on my other foot, she will move her paw that was already in place. We have been stuck on this step for awhile, do you have any suggestions?

I use real meat, beef, chicken or ham or liver. I take the amount of treats I use out of their meals so as they don't over eat, I only do this when I'm doing a lot of training though. thank you for your nice comment.

when my dog puts one paw on my foot, he doesn't push off the floor to get the other paw on my foot. Could you help me solve this problem, thnx
dalyamou123 2 years ago
who inspired you to do this trick?
dalyamou123 2 years ago
yolle555!
zsianz1 2 years ago
This is such a creative trick for dogs. But when my dog out's his paw on my shoe he takes it off again. Do you know how to solve this problem? Please reply, thank you. ;-)
dalyamou123 2 years ago
click as soon as your dog puts it's paw on your foot, keep doing this over and over and over, reward with repeated treats if your dog keeps it's foot there slightly longer (this should happen given enough time) you could also try waiting a fraction longer each time he pops his paw on your foot before you click. last idea is get some squirty cheese (cheese in a tube) and when your dog is touching your foot squeeze the cheese gently into his mouth and when he removes his foot remove the cheese!

thank you sooo much for solving this problem! :o)

wow i can't belive this, i hope sometime i can make a training prosses vid with Taz!

Thank you

that is a vey cute trick! It would be great i you post more videos ! By the way, what's the verbal cue for that trick?
dalyamou123 2 years ago
hey, thanks for your nice comment :-) When I turn my feet in when she is between my legs this works as a non verbal cue and then I say 'hop on' but I think she uses the feet turning in as her cue more than the verbal cue :-)

Zsianz1!!! That is totally AMAZING! A lot of fun to watch! Good training.
Please continue to post mor video.

How long did it take you to FULLY train your dog to do this trick?
StuffStudio 2 years ago
Hey, I find it hard to put a time frame on it because I never know when to call a trick finished! I'm still working on this now to get her to stay on for longer and longer and in different places with distractions and with less treats! to get to the stage at the end of the video took around 2 weeks though.
zsianz1 2 years ago
that was great!! I think since we've been working on paw placement this will be a good one to move on to...THANKS AS ALWAYS!!
chuntoon007 2 years ago
thank you so much for your lovely comment! I always find it hard to put a time frame on a trick as when do you call a trick 'done' I'm still working on this trick now, in different places and keep going without a treat and going backwards too. it took the longest to get her to place both feet on mine, about a week of 2-3 training sessions of 5 minutes a day. I had been training this for around 2-3 weeks at the time of this video. but some dogs will pick it up faster and some slower.
zsianz1 2 years ago
THNXS YOU! & i'll let ya know how it goes!
chuntoon007 2 years ago
haha, my dogs are the same!! oh yes, do let me know how you get on :-)
zsianz1 2 years ago
I would just like to let ppl know that you can also 'mark' the desired behaviour by saying a particular word when the dog does something right instead of using the clicker. I say 'YES'.
Also, I wanted to ask if you came up with the paws on feet thing yourself.
PrettyLoather 2 years ago
good point, so long as you say it the same way each time marking the behaviour with 'YES' works too!

Aww I love this trick, it's adorable. I'm definitley going to try this with Chaos. I love your tutorials, you break everything down perfectly. :]

zsianz1 2 years ago
What is the purpose of the clicker if you are giving her treats?
hockeydiva93 2 years ago
good question! the click marks the behaviour at the moment it happens, there are times when the dog will only offer a behaviour for a second and that's when you should click. you always follow a click with a treat and the dog comes to realize that whatever they were doing at the moment they heard the click was the right thing and they have earned a treat. it's very hard to feed a dog a treat the second they are doing the right thing so the clicker makes things easier!

Oh my goodness Sian!!! I cant tell you how brilliant this is!! Your such a talented trainer, thank you so much for making this, im going to try it with Samson :)

Ah! I've got the point where Sparky is standing between my legs and he'll stand on one or the other foot but when I try and get him to do both he removes the one he has on before moving the other! Help?
Great video, as always.

I'll send you a quick mail about this as I've run out of room for my comment here!!
zsianz1 2 years ago
Does Mabel offer to stand on your feet at all sorts of times and places? Jett does, I don't discourage it and am glad he feels comfortable enough to do it:) Do you remember I mentioned it seemed to be taking him some time to understand hind end movement? He's got it now! I stepped up the times we tried it to several times per day for a few clicks instead of once daily and that helped alot. Thanks again for all your videos/help:)
TERVULOCITY 2 years ago
yes she does! it really hurts when I have bare feet but I don't like to ask her to get off because she thinks she is doing a good thing! I just sweat it out and have scratched feet! haha! oh, well done on your breakthrough, yes doing shorter and more frequent training sessions is a great way to get more out of the time you spend training! keep up the good work :-)

what happens if u have a small dog how do u teach him or her how to walk with u with out u having to kneel down.......
dogagility100 2 years ago
it's going to be a bit more difficult to train a smaller dog this but as you have to bend over quite far anyway to point at your shoe I don't think it would be too different. I think smaller steps would be in order though!! the youtube user WinnietheCorgi has this trick on her tricks video and her Corgi does a great job so you might want to check that out :-)

Aw Sian, this is fantastic!

JustJesse197 2 years ago
thank you so much Heather! it took me quite a while to realize that turning my feet in would help, I tried leaning this way and that to encourage her to put her other foot up and all I had to do was turn my feet in! haha!
