Simple. Since he became lead they went to the top of the charts and stayed there. If he hadn't had such a big head and tried to get along and had been from the neighborhood, I think Berry might have called them David Ruffin and the Temps, just like Diana and Smokey.
Love all things Temptations and all Temptations- past and present (Paul is my fav). David was good, the last piece to the Temps puzzle, but he WAS NOT an ORIGINAL member. It boggles my mind that he could/would ever think of changing to David Ruffin & the Temptations. After all, he didn't make them, they were The Temptations BEFORE he joined. He added something to the group just as Dennis and each new Temp added to the group. That is why the hits just kept on coming.
@dimbrown1 ...as a witness to the era, you are correct DR joined later, but they hit it BIG when he took lead, he sang lead most of the time, and that sound you hear with DR singing is the defining Temps sound. It just was. Ironically, the groups sales were stronger when Dennis joined in late '68, but that really was past the magical period, a diff Temps singing great songs. I'm biased because DR was my fav though. Anyway, luv those Temps.
I can tell you are a true Temps fan. We admit our bias (my is Paul) but we continue to support them all. We disagree but respect the others opinion. My favorite group is the Classic Five but I like to listen to some of the Psychedelic Temps only because I hear more of Paul on the songs-not because I like the songs themselves. (I know, I'm just crazy about Paul) Keep loving those Temps.
Paul Williams Jr is a apart of Dennis Edwards' Group. And David Jr., Paul Jr., Melvin Jr., and Richard Street Jr., are putting something together as a group.

I can tell you are a true Temps fan. We admit our bias (my is Paul) but we continue to support them all. We disagree but respect the others opinion.
