@sparkomatic I totally agree that Bono's performance was emulating Jim Morrison here. That wasn't the issue I was commenting on. What I was responding to was the comment made that this performance must have been after the Oliver Stone Doors movie.
This and Ivisible Sun (with the Police) were the two highlights of that tour. (Oh, wait - there was also that fantastic Peter Gabriel rendition of Biko...) Amazing to think they were just on the verge of releasing Joshua Tree when this took place.
I think Bono had been watching too much of Jim Morrison in this stage of his career..Must have been just after the Oliva Stone movie (The Doors) came out...I spot a fake any day...Bono Morrison....
Um... The Doors movie came out in 1991. This performance was from the Conspiracy of Hope tour from 1986. People really should not speak on what they do not know
@ceallach67 There was actual footage of JIm Morrison doing this schtick. I wish I could remember from where, I would reference it. I was at this show, and at the time, I'd already seen the footage of Morrison doing this bit. But that's OK. Musicians "borrow" from earlier acts all the time. Angus Young does a variation of Chuck Berry's duckwalk. it's all good. I agree with the other poster that Bono was channeling Jim Morrison to some degree at this time.
I know this is not a great cover but it makes sense to me when im depressed! When i see seven towers but I only see one way out. When I need someone and nobody is their.
This is a amazing. The Joshua Tree was just around the corner... the Edge was already wearing a hat. The opening to Maggie's Farm is very reminiscent of the loop to Mothers of the Disappeared and Bono is using the spotlight an act he was to repeat on the Joshua Tree tour. A fascinating glimpse into a time when no-one could predict the awesome album they were about to release the next year.
Not bad, but what you're really looking for is the Rage Against the Machine version.
The music builds up, and as you feel the growing deception, you start to feel the anger starting to boil inside of you.
Besides, the "Turn out the light, mister" is straight from a Doors concert, just look The End song

Bono at a very young age was able to command a massive stadium audience. Pretty amazing stage talent.
