  • All of this rejecting taxonomy bullshit needs to stop. Every band is identifiable within set genre or genres, even Opeth. I don't know why so many sycophantic fanboys need to insist their favorite band is uncategorizeable so the band sounds cooler. Opeth is my favorite metal band. And you know what? They play a mixture of prog rock, death metal, acoustic folk and blues. If you try to deny that, you don't have a right to ever classify anything else again. Stop pretending this is fucking hard.

  • @JBT24 Well said. I am also irritated with Opeth fans who think it's a compliment to say that Opeth "don't make metal, they make art." If this kind of nonsense doesn't stop, then one day Opeth will be the most hated band ever, they'll end up like Final Fantasy VII, which reputation's been completely obliterated by fanboys and haters alike. Opeth ARE the greatest metal band ever to exist, of this I have no doubt, but there's no need to contrive bullshit "compliments".

  • @JBT24

Ya.... And then you listen to their new song and they've thrown metal completely out the window and are now a Jazz Fusion band.

Opeth isn't uncategorizable per say. They just cover about 30 different genres.

  • @Nubnut 60% of their music is progressive metal. They mix in rock/blues/jazz/folk/pop/ambiance and maybe a couple more. Having a metal song with diverse influences or a rock song with diverse influences doesn't make a band impossible to categorize. And if you're talking about The Devil's Orchard, there's barely anything jazzy about it, it sounds like generic prog rock, or an Anekdoten rip off.

  • @JBT24 And Anekdoten is HEAVILY influenced (some say a ripoff of) by King Crimson, so essentially you're saying that it sounds like King Crimson, which was commonly described as both Prog Rock and Jazz Fusion.

  • Comment removed

  • @Nubnut You also forgot that KC and Anekdoten are definitely not "unrecognizable", and even with the whole death metal element, Opeth has as much variety as those bands.

  • @JBT24 Very true, I guess what I'm saying is that I would call them a prog rock band with metal leanings rather than a death metal band with prog leanings these days.

  • Burden is one of the best musics of opeth

  • wtf do you care??' Do you only listen to opeth retard???

Stfu and next time try to answer with some head @retorique

  • Opeth is cozy and brutal as hell!!

  • its an interview with Mikeal Akerfeld not Opeth :D

  • @Niwron94 haha he IS Opeth.

  • I don't get why you people insist on creating genre confusion in order to proclaim a band good. Genres have definitions, the blues is an element of metal in the first place, as jazz is of progressive rock. Those things don't need to be said, they're implied by definition.

Opeth: Obscenely good Progressive Death Metal. And they're good enough that they can further hybridize without destroying their core sound. Why make shit up rather than recognize that kind of mastery?!

  • which music is this??? OPETH ROCKS!

  • @jpfmsantoz Proggresive De... What the fuck, is that a Nickelback video on your favorites?!

  • @jpfmsantoz @jpfmsantoz Progressive De... What the fuck, is that a Nickelback video on your favorites?!

  • @retorique

Not everyone has to close their minds to all but one genre ^^

  • peter ,lopez....we will miss you...

  • @icketypickety i miss lopez...not peter....but i was pleased with watershed ^^ so im still a fan hehe songs still have the same feeling and depth ^^

  • omg....love this band! been listening to them since i was in the 8th grade!!!

  • I hate how some people won't give Opeth credit because they've come a long way and have joined the mainstream a bit. They're still a fucking amazing band. I still listen to their music in awe. They deserve more praise than we can give them. They truly ARE musicians.

  • He is a musical genus

  • there is no genre for them, theyre just opeth \m/

  • No guys they have their own genre called "amazing"

  • "i've always wanted to be a musician."

when i first heard opeth live i thought "man, this guy is BORN to do metal..." and yeah bon jovi should be grateful!!!!

  • @herfstval This is true.

  • Bon Jovi should wake up grateful every morning because Mikael hasn't killed him yet.

  • "Mikael Akerfeld"

  • id classify'em musicians gods!!

  • i would classify them as good music.

  • They're an extreme polka/tango experimental electronic band. Get it right you guys.

  • A lot of Opeth's other stuff does contain harsh death metal vocals as well as clear melodies. I would class them as an extreme metal band with prog rock roots.

  • Progressive death metal I think, especially if you listen to MAYH, BWP or Ghost Reveries, those sound a lot more like death metal than 'extreme metal'.

  • Nice handle, my three favorite bands...

  • opeth on lowlands 2009 :D

    im gonna see them :D

Nice video, I like it alot!

For all those who don't have a populair or such a nice video and still

Send me a pm, i'll take care of it!

  • I guess my english is too poor to bring my true idea... all I'm saying is that, Opeth is and can only be categorized under the title "Opeth". just like dream theater belongs to only "Dream theater" and Pink Floyd to "Pink Floyd".

  • your english is fine, your point is debatable.

  • I agree with you cause i mean if you gonna say that Opeth is jazz , blues, Ambient black, progressive, death , doom metal every time someone wonders i whould get pretty sick of it.

  • You could call pink Floyd Progressive and Dream theatre and Opeth Progressive Metal, maybe. You're making things to complicated. I mean its all rock one way or another or heavy rock but you're right, they are very unique bands. Your English is also good.

  • I don't care about the line-up. They still sound so....unparalleled. I can't even classify them. Neither can any of you who make an attempt to classify them. Any attempt at this at all will ALWAYS result in an understatement. Opeth=Opeth. Thats the only statement that can be said without it being an understatement.

  • No, they can be categorized. And their categiry is Opeth. just like Pink Floyd and Dream Theater.

  • Thats basically what I said when I stated that Opeth=Opeth.

  • Forgive me for my poor choice of words, but I mean there syle of music is not metal, or punk, or pop, but a category called Opeth Music.

  • That's better.

  • Uhm, I don't hear any grunts/screams in DT and PF... However I DO like DT, PF's just not my stuff. So those two are NOT the same either. So they don't form a category, that's comparing apples to pears, as we say in Holland.

There is one thing in common: long songs, but for the rest, they're different, just accept it

  • OR , in other words, Opeth is the same as DT and PF, in a sense that their music is simply unique, original, and distinctive. It's not about whether there are gruntings or not. Forgive me for misleading you.

  • Lot of Pink Floyd influences like Mikael said himself, anyways Opeth rules.

  • @reezokazov They deserve the "fantastic" credit you and I wish we could give them but there is some simplicity to how to categorize Opeth, as awesome as they are and even Mikael would prefer to be called : PROGRESSIVE. Period.

  • @reezokazov

very good way of putting it.

  • Stop the bitching about the Peter/Martin L.-Fredrik/Martin A. switch, I actually like both lineups!!

Whining about it won't help shit.

  • Peter was never a very important person in the band, musically. He seemed like a very amiable guy, but Akesson is a great guy too. It doesn't really matter since Peter is fine without Opeth and there are no hard feelings, nor with Lopez. There is just no denying that Axenrot is a great drummer, just different. As for "chemistry", there really wasn't any... If you watch other interviews, Peter was pretty much just there. Akesson seems a lot more involved.

  • But I think that musically there was chemistry even if the interviews were a little one sided. Still both of them are great guitarists.

  • whY DONT they won p3 guld and grammis fucking stupid jury

  • Why everyone voted this comment down? I think it´s great to improve your taste of music. Also, I think you can´t do anything with it. If you don´t want to listen to metal music anymore, that´s it. You can´t do anything with it. Actually, for me Opeth is also one of the few 'extreme metal' bands that I listen.

  • anyone knows the name of the synthesizers? I forgot but they are realy cool

  • mellotron?

  • Opeth is the best band still today. But I do hate that Lopez left (I love his jazzy way of playing) and especially Peter. Devoted fan but I'm on the fence about them now.

  • shut the fuck up.

and peter wrote like 2 solos. think it was wreath and deliverance first ones. he didn't do anything else.

  • Go to hell, you little bitch. There's chemistry between them. I've been a fan WAY longer than you and I am used to seeing both guys in the band. And if you're talking about Wreath, then you sure don't know shit about them. He did a lot more. One of the best guitarists ever. You're not a fan if you don't appreciate, you stupid little cunt.

  • Grow up.

  • Go to hell.

  • You're a fanboy anyway. Probably JUST now a fan if you're hating on Peter. Go listen to your little Emo music b/c you're not an Opeth fan.

  • *love* ty
