  • There's a Weezer song somewhere that totally rips off this track...just saying. haha

  • from 1:13 its mosh time!!!!!

  • To : Anyone who happen to be @ The Vatican , In Houston Texas, circa 89

the Show was magnetically beautiful,,the lightning effect .

At that time we were rocking against the corporate feeding of

"classic rock ,dance music, hair band heavy metal. and lennards kinnerds"

This was two years before "Never mind" so, to all you wannabe's ....

    and corporate suck ups..

    piss off man .

  • @wwgt Fix your grammar, dude.

  • Hombre mucho a Smells Like Teen Spirit no se parece,es como More than a feeling de Boston,el riff es aprecido, pero no igual.

    Mucho mejor NIRVANA

  • one time i was really drunk and totally passed out and this song came on tv and i totally woke up screaming "Pixies!!!!" and everyone stared. :truestory:

  • @TheDallyLama Idaho sucks.

  • @TheDallyLama Ha ha.

  • IT'S EDUCATIONAL!

  • Tu Polacy przejmujemy ten filmik :D.

  • cool

  • whoa. i was totally like number 300. (technically 296, and there were 4 dislikes)

  • A lot of musicians ripped off the pixies ... but that's okay, because it's a good song. And I'm sure they wouldn't really care.

  • they remind me of the murder city devils sometimes.

  • Holy shit! Stop talking about Kurt Cobain on a Pixies video! Nirvana is my favorite band, but I came to hear Kim Deal and Black Francis kick some ass with their amazing music!

  • Just love them, they are great.

  • It's EXUCATIONAL! Love !!!

  • Everybodys been ripping off their predecessors since Dylan first penned the immortal, " Blowin` in the Wind "....................if nobody had ripped off those that came before, we`d all still be wearing ill fitting suits and getting excited at lyrics like " walking my baby back home ".....

  • this is poor music idk how u can say this is easy on the ears.. this guy sounds like a drunk rambler.. not hating, just an honest opinon.

  • @Ogoley22 "it's educational"!

  • @Ogoley22 Go Bieber your ass.

  • How does this sound like Nirvana?

  • @MiniMousePoo2

softLOUDsoftverseCHORUSverse... somewhat nonsequitter lyrics...muscular drumming throughout...got a good hook... um, here we are now, entertain us.

  • All good bands rip of the pixies.

  • nirvana didnt rip off the pixies Cobain said when he was doing Smells Like Teen Spirit he was basically trying to be like the pixies, then he said "i obviously failed". Its not a rip off, its basically just an influence.

    Doesnt matter really

  • @321Green1Fork123 he may or may not have said "i obviously failed" for some reason i remember him saying that but idk hahah. Cant find the interview anymore for some reason either. But either way it doesnt matter, its not a rip off, its just an influence. A rip off is used loosely a lot. A real rip off would be like MIA using Straight to Hell by the Clash in Paper Planes. I like the song paper planes and i love the clash, so it doesnt really matter... just enjoy music i guess haha

  • Trompe le Monde was released on September 23, 1991.... Nevermind was released September 24, 1991. Teen Spirit was released as a single on Sept 10 & first performed live on April 17, 1991. U-Mass was not released as a single. Therefore any similiarity between U-Mass and Teen Spirit is purely coincidental, unless the Pixies happened to be at the OK Hotel in Seattle in April 1991 to hear Nirvana play SLTS live for the first time. Surfer Rosa however did make Kurt Cobain's top 50 album list.

  • Reminds me of Accepted.

  • Kurt Cobain: "I was basically just trying to rip off the Pixies". I love Nirvana and the Pixies. I don't dislike either band more because I know that Cobain was very influenced by the Pixies, to do that would be completely stupid. Just enjoy two of the greatest bands to ever grace the earth.

  • @160ofthe90s wise words man. But we all know there are more than two greatest bands to grace the earth :)

  • @160ofthe90s The only thing that was really sad about that was that it would have been nice if the pixies where 5 years later, or nirvana 5 years earlier, so the pixies could have enjoyed the full fruits of the grunge/indy mega that nirvana brought about

  • @MrShayneOneill But if Nirvana had come before Pixies, they wouldn't have been Nirvana.

  • @MrShayneOneill Are you for REAL? Good grief. The Pixies INVENTED grunge! Your comments make me shake my head sadly....

  • will someone explain where is the rip off?? this song isnt even close to smells like teen spirit - two different songs, Kurt was just inspired with pixies but it isnt plagiarism..

  • @Patrycz4k yes it is...kurt cobain said it himself

  • @McGovP doesnt matter what he says in interviews (he lied a lot and used a lot of sarcasm and irony) but just judging by myself you can say that there is not rip off, he could be very inspired by pixies

  • @Patrycz4k yeah cos falsely admitting plagarism is a sensible thing to do...

  • @McGovP lmao Kurt Cobain and being sensible...

  • Damn near every good band rips off the pixies

  • I guess this song was educational for Kurt...

  • In the first picture, Black Francis looks alarmingly like Syd Barrett when he visited the "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" session in '75.

  • Pixies (L)

  • sounds like teen spirit

  • influence is still going check out cage the elephant my niece was listening to them i thought it was a new pixies song

  • IT'S EDUCATIONAL !!

  • Like lots of things youve heard about it.

  • when i heard this i automatically thought nirvana had copied it with smells like teen spirit, but if they came out in the same year at the same time, hmmm its confusing

  • @starcraft108 didn't know they came out the same year i kinda doubt it but u could be right(To lazt/drunk to look it up haha). But on a side note cobain said one of his biggest influences was the pixies and actually said that some of his most popular songs were just him trying to write a pixies song.

  • @starcraft108 Apparently Nirvana were inspired by the Pixies :)

  • @95simonbrody oh definately, only reason nirvana exist, pixies were better though

  • @starcraft108

    Huh?

I can't hear Teen Spirit in this song at all...though I was pretty sure this album came out way after Nevermind, by a year or something close to that

  • @SuperSquishface..... quiet then loud.... dont get it?? Pixies were a major influence on nearly all of the bands which went after them and held guitars, the sublimely good Nirvana included.

  • @molbystwin

Oh right, yeah...no, of course, I am well aware of the influence, it's just that most of Nirvanas songs hold that dynamic so I thought that you meant that these songs share something in the notes of the music as you just singled out Teen Spirit...

  • @SuperSquishface Actually, U-Mass and SLTShave virtually identical chords at times. Granted, different guitarists can play the same notes in different ways. They came out at virtually the same time so it couldn't be a rip off, just an obvious influence. Kobain said in an interview that SLTS was basically their attempt to make a Pixies song and can be heard during a studio session worrying that Nevermind would sound too much like a Pixies album.

  • @SebastianSB

Oh yeah, I know all about that (got into Pixies through Nirvana...I was one of those Nirvana obsessed freaks as a teen=S) and undoubtedly, Nevermind would not of come out the way it did, nor of been as successful as it was without Pixies influence...though I still think that Nirvanas songs are original in their own right, not as much of a blatant rip-off as Kurt thought...in my opinion=)

  • Why didn't you feel comfortable writing cunt, cock and ass? They sing about it so what is the deal?

  • i was born and raised in new englan i fucking love the pixies

  • kiss me cunt

  • @pumpkins667 yeah but they weren't very good - except for bob mould

  • i hear an altered riff of smells like teen spirit in this song

  • @henhouse100 smells like teen spirit and alot of songs by Kurt were influenced by the pixies

  • @henhouse100 I think you mean that you hear an altered riff of U-mass in Smells like teen spirit. This song came first.

  • @henhouse100 smells like teen spirit riff is a ripoff of More Than a Feeling

  • @maxjordan90 Lol and here I thought I was the only one who noticed that! It's kind of sad that Nirvana's two biggest songs, "SMTS" and "Come as You Are", are basically ripoffs (or at least the riffs are).

  • @maxjordan90

But it's ok, because Kurt accepted that and joked with it.

    Just watch Live At Reading.

  • Fart.

  • I go to Umass. It is not educational.

  • @Budaphly Go to Smith on the weekends. That's where the real education begins...

  • @xagzaxien Except if you're a dude.

  • 1 dislike. xD

  • It's not even close to a rip off. Just because you have simular strumming on a riff it doesn't make it a ripoff. In that case thousand of other bands have been ripping off this song.

  • mosh time!!!!!

  • mosh time

  • Why is it, that Nirvana seem to get away with ripping off the Pixies(openly to!)? I like them (though majorly overrated), but if it was any other band, they'd be slated to death.

  • @OpenedCanOfWhoopAss It's because songwriting credits are not actually about the backing music so much as the vocal melody and the lyric. It's weird, but the main thing stopping people from stealing guitar riffs isn't so much credit as the fact that most things that are good enough to be worth stealing are already well-known.

  • IT'S EDUCATIONAL!!!!

  • i always wondered what song kurt was referring to when he says he ripped them off when he wrote smells like teen spirit, then i was casually listening to trompe le monde and i instantly knew he was referring to u-mass.

  • 1 person doesn't like this song, let's kill him!! :D

  • @polishkods nah, let's pity the poor deluded fool :)

  • Nirvana did rip off the pixies. They totally admitted it too. So, who cares? They're both awesome. And props to Kurt for admitting it!

  • @AngieIsAwful kurt had magic, just like the pixies...

he even admitted to ripping them off.. but in the end his compositions were also very unique.

and I am sorry if this offends any pixies fan, I love both nirvana and pixies.. but what kurt couldnt do that the pixies could, I DONT THINK THE Pixies could ever come up with some shit like "endless nameless" and gallons of rubbing alcohol fill the stip.

    TY :)

  • @odiumimbues That isn't what AngielsAwful's comment is about.

    Can you read?

  • @1776AmericaFirst

What are you talking about? This song has nothing to do with 9/11 or israel.

  • You know what I like most about this song... it's educational

  • did nirvana ripped it off for smells? i hear some similarities but its not what we call rip-off. if it was so, every song would be copied from something. saying "its ripped off, thats taken" is what mean girls in a girls room does

  • Pixies make bald people cool

  • @jiggy716

    Them and Bruce Willis.

  • I've just gone through a list of songs of every Pixies song ever made, and this being the last, as I've already heard other songs after 'U-Mas' (in alphabetical order such as Where is my mind and vamos) and I have to say, The Pixies are GODS man. They literally are the sickest band of all time - in line with Nirvana, of course :P

  • "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a "distant cousin" to this. Kurt was influenced by it - the same rhythm pattern & beat, also using 4 chords, but they're not the same chords or the same key, this one being in G and Nirvana's in F, and it's not the same chord pattern, as this one is G-C-F-Bb (1-4-7-3m) and Nirvana's SLTS is F-Bb-Ab-Db (1-4-3m-6). I'd call it an homage rather than a ripoff. A Nirvana song that's a definite ripoff is "Come As You Are", a direct ripoff from Killing Joke's "Eighties".

  • @BAMAMARV

Nothing is ever a rip off. Did the beatles rip off countless blue bands from the 50's for playing 12 bar blues?

Overlaps will occur, especially when rock music persists on using the dominant chord as the first chord, and repeating generi 1-4-5's, and 1-3-6's, and such.

  • @elipoop123 No offense, but I don't agree with your opinion much at all. There are many songs that use the same chords, yet most of them manage to differentiate themselves in some way. This particular song & cadence is not common in Rock/Pop music & it's obvious to me that Kurt was influenced enough to create a soundalike homage to it. As far as The Beatles ripping anyone off, their music was totally unique once it got past the 1st couple of albums, and even a few tracks on those were unique.

  • @BAMAMARV each song is its own. With the type of music Nirvana and the pixies played, chords, melody's, it was all just the vessel.

  • when is the umass band going to learn this? much better than playing for boston which is the bc song.

  • car dancin to this and i don't give a damn whos watching. love it.

  • Wow. Can't really blame Kurt Cobain for ripping off of this, its such a good song. (And don't flame me for this, he actually admitted it)

  • This song just makes me want to listen to this song some more

  • EVERY ROCK SONG SOUNDS THE SAME QUIT FUCKING BITCHING ABOUT TWO GREAT SONGS SOUNDING VAGUELY SIMILAR IF YOU HAPPEN TO CATCH ONE OF THEM IN THE OTHER ROOM WITH YOUR EARS FILLED WITH TISSUE PAPER AND BLOOD

  • wow the guitar in this song's chorus does actually sounds a helluva lot similar to the riff in smells like teen spirit. but whatever, i don't give shit! they're both good songs

  • you guys should all just rape each other and get over it. music is made to be listened to either way

  • Dave Grohl acknowledged in many notes that the song seemed to him a robbery of the Pixies, but has the metric verse-chorus-verse, there was a robbery actually visible to the indie band.

  • You don't need comparsions with Pixies to Nirvana, one gave us the other & we should be happy with either or both. Those of us lucky enough to have seen them in the Surfa Rosa/Doolittle days will know you have a reason to be proud, even if you're only one of many........

  • The Pixies didn't influence Nirvana,Kurt had Nirvana sound like he thought punk would sound. He read about all the punk bands but never heard any of 'em.The music stations where he was from didn't play 'em and he was too poor to buy the music.

  • @dale420gribble Kurt Cobain said Nirvana was just a Pixies cover band, Nirvana was hugely influence by the Pixies.Check out a book about either band and you'll read it.

  • Pixies has influenced Nirvana, it's like that...

  • influences against them is naive.

  • Without the pixies Nirvana never would have existed. Curt Cobain's favorite album of the 80's decade was Surfer Rosa. People should read up on what they tend to blab about as not to make asses out of themselves.

  • @bxymox without the pixies, there would never have been the pixies

  • Without the pixies Nirvana never would have existed. Curt Cobain's favorite album of the 80's decade was Surfer Rosa. People should read up on what they tend to blab about as not to make asses out of themselves.

  • Nirvana and Pixies are both awesome.

    End of discussion.

  • I can indeed hear Teen Spirit in it lol

Oh well though it may seem like Nirvana 'stole' that riff

it won't wreck my love for that song lol

this song rocks as well ^^

  • Of course Nirvana ripped off the Pixies, but who would blame them. The Pixies were Kurts favourite band. My favourite song though is Velouria. Please excuse my bad spelling. I'm not American.

  • Can't compare bands. The Pixies kick ass.

  • This song is awesome!!

  • @lorriem34470 and educational

  • The guitar riff in the chorus is the same that the one in SLTS by Nirvana!!!

  • I guess there is similarity between the chorus' in this and Teen Spirit, but I wouldn't call it a rip-off. They're definitely not identical.

  • This should be mandatory at every uni party.

  • can you explain me wheres the similarity with smells like teen spirit xd.???Time, riffs of the songs are completely diferent...

All songs of Nirvana are incredibible and 100 % originals.

  • @roller899

Well Man, Nirvana all most did not record Smells like teen Spirit because it was too much like The Pixies. Good thing they did!

  • i think this is the song that nirvana take the chorus and make smells like teen

  • @2405efrapix Kurt wanted to copy Debaser as far as i can remember, though you might be right.

  • @mrdfitz1 thats what kurt said about smells like teen spirit.

  • @thefinalgent u suck

  • i fuckin love the pixies of all people my 50 year old dad got me into them lmfao

  • You got a cool dad, then.

  • went to thier concert last night

    awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great!

  • 2:08 nice pic!

    Great song too!

  • It would absolutely no sense how anyone cannot get addicted to this song.

  • Kurt Cobain said outright that Smells Like Teen Spirit was written based on the structure of Pixies songs, i.e. that 'quiet, loud, quiet' sort of thing.

He ostensibly, and legitimately 'borrowed' from the Pixies - and categorically not the other way round. Besides, I think that Trompe le Monde also came out before Nevermind, so U-mass precedes Smells like Teen Spirit, albeit only by a few months (both released in 1991).

  • Trompe le Monde was released on 9/23, while Nevermind was released on 9/24. However, Smells like teen spirit as a single was released on 9/10. And Smells like Teen Spirit was being written before U-mass was released and vice versa. Smells like Teen Spirit is more borrowed by Debaser, while U-Mass is just simply the Pixies repeating their technique.

  • "Smells Like Teen Spirit is more borrowed by Debaser"?

    "Borrowed by"?

Bit confused here. Debaser is from "Doolittle", which came out in 1989, so how could it borrow from Nirvana?

Unless you meant the other way around?

  • yessir i meant the other way around.

  • No its not, Kurt never said that. If anything it was just an embarrassing coincidence for Kurt that SLTS sounded similar to More Than A Feeling.

  • i dont think Boston is a bad band though, definitely no where near as good as Nirvana or Pixies. Although they were a big mainstream sellout band, read the lyrics to "Peace of mind" and you'll see they arent so bad. they also do lots of charity work and are pretty damn liberal.

there are definitely worse mainstream rock bands out there...

  • Were you born without ears??

  • Maledetti idioti.

    Nirvana o Pixies???

Kurt disse che fecero smells like teen spirit per scimmiottare una canzone dei pixies...

E poi non si fanno classifiche...si gode e basta!

  • Pixes vs. Nirvana? What a stupid comparison. I'll take both, thanks.

  • @chadisapunkrocker NIRVANA ROCKS LOLOL.

  • @chadisapunkrocker While I can understand where you're coming from, I think many of the posters are just frustrated by the Nirvana fanboys unwillingness to accept that the Pixies were an immense influence on the band. Cobain himself admitted that without the Pixies there would have been no Nirvana. Music is about taking up and revising the past, the fact that Nirvana was influenced so greatly by a great band is not a negative, but a positive. I don't like Nirvana myself, but holding their

  • @chadisapunkrocker kurt was inspired by the pixies its a discrace u compair him 2 them after he thort he failed at writing teen spirit cause he wanted it 2 sound like a pixies song

  • @chadisapunkrocker No, pixies come on top even Kurt Cobain would say so. After all, he said that he was 'basically trying to rip off the pixies' when he wrote smells like teen spirit. Not that I hate Nirvana, I like some of their songs, but pixies definitely come out on top.

  • ten times better than any youth anthem. fuck nirvana. this is such a good song, one of the best ever, especially in summer, along with the pixies version of head on

  • nirvana is just as good as the pixies

  • i dont get it...fuck Nirvana because this is a good song? Just because you don't like Nirvana doesn't mean you have to bring them up in the middle of your praise of this song...just pointless

  • i like nirvana, but no, there is no comparison. i was addicted to nirvana in high school, then introduced to the pixies. i would give ANYTHING to see them live.

  • i just got tickets for the pixies next year!
