i was going to say grease the living shit out of it..you will never hurt anything by over greasing it,,and your felt liner at the back of the door that the glass rides on you can spray lithium grease on that too...any door i take apart for any reason i always grease everything..including the door latch..
@390merc65 Thanks for the tips. I just had to replace ANOTHER one a few months back. (Driver door). Crazy window goes up on an angle now. Not bad... just a touch... but enough that it doesn't close correctly when you put the window up all the way. Any suggestions on that? I adjusted the tracks, but that did nothing. Others are having this problem too, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Lazy Comic. Great video! I have just lost my rear window behind the drivers seat and looked into just keeping the window up. But your video looks good so I might attempt to have a go myself! hahaha you will like this one....my local Hyundai dealer told me it was $510 for the motor and regulator on a 2001 model! What a rip! Cheers again for the video too
@motown5150 There is a place online that I now use for the regulators. It is called 1-A Auto. They even have a YouTube channel. I got my latest front regulator from them for around $50.00 with free shipping. This was in the past couple of months. I put it in... and it works great. It's after-market, but who cares? The Hyundai ones are garbage, so what do I have to lose? Give it a shot. You'll be fine.
Thank you so much for both your videos - I had three windows on my 2000 Elantra that were broken, and I just successfully removed and replaced the regulator in one, using the existing motor. It was easy, and your video was so helpful. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you for posting this. I just bought a used Hyundai with a broken regulator (wire snapped) and suspected it was something I could fix myself. Didn't even think of using a pipe to hold the window up... that'll definitely help a LOT with the process. :) I own two Hyundai's right now and the newer one has been amazingly reliable, no problems over the last 6 years. The older ones seem to have a lot more issues/shitty workmanship. Maybe they saw your video, haha.
@unmemorableusername Here's the website for the replacement regulators for $47.00. 1aauto.com They don't have Hyundai on the list... but they do stock them. Call them on the phone and they'll get it together for you. Hope this helps.
@shally2186 yea confirmed how easy it was! thanks for the insight and LOVE how u shared ur mind bout what u think bout Hyundia.. Hers is all done and ALL GOOD! appreciate the vid!
During a very cold winter we used the regulators regularly in & out of a garage (key system). The window got stuck at down position in -30°C.
The local Hyundai service partner "solved" the issue by pulling the window up by hand(!).
The regulator broke a year later so it was hard to claim any refund for that action.
Thank's to your amazing video I gained courage to go through the process by myself. I bought a spare regulator for ~$50 & it took me about two hours (lots of mosquitoes) to fix. =}
I'm glad that the video helped you out on fixing it yourself.
Sorry I had no remedy for the mosquito problem though, but it sounds like you did okay even though you were attacked by the pesky, (or is that pesty), bugs.
I have a 2000 hyundai elantra gls and i will be replacing my regulator for the second damn time later today. Mine broke at the exact same spot as yours did on that white plastic pully part. These regulators are pure CRAP. And I'm positive that it will break within another 6 months just as the new one did... good tutorial though. Also make sure you are careful with your hands when digging around in the door for the window parts or loosening nuts/bolts since there are very sharp metal edges.
Make sure you grease the hell out of the cable and those nylon pulleys. It makes all the difference in the world. I used brake caliper grrease. It was real messy, but who cares if the regulator doesn't break again. Move around in the door real slow with your hands so you don't get cut. The regulator I replaced in the car for the video is still working fine. LOTS OF GREASE... I think is the key on this. Hope it helps you out.
OK. Stupid question. How long is the piece of PVC pipe you were using? I am going to replace my right front this weekend. I might just use the PVC pipe as a permanent fix for my left rear door. Thanks for the video -- I had the driver's front door done professionally, and don't want to have to pay that much again.
That's not a stupid question, but to be honest, I never measured it. I just worked at it to make it fit, but I still have it in the back of my car. I'll dig it out and measure it for you and get back to you with the answer. If you don't need the window to open in the back, the PVC pipe will do the trick. Can you believe how shitty those window regulators are built? They are some real garbage. I hope my video helps you on the installation.
Hey there thelazycomic I feel you pain lol. I own 00' Elantra and when I bought the car used it had two bad regulators drivers door and rear pass door. My issue was with the gears on the motor breaking. I fixed the driver side door and have yet to fix that back pass side. I wish I would have found this video a year ago.. O well easy fix IMO... how do you like those Exhaust Manifold cracking and upper catalytic converts crapping out?
I had the manifold replaced within a year of buying the car. I got a recall notice from Hyundai, so other than some time at the garage, at least that was paid for. As for the catalytic converter, I guess I still have that to look forward to. Right now, I've got some purge solenoid valve that has the check engine light on. This one looks like I should be able to do it myself. Hell, the car is 10 years old. I should expect these kinds of fixes.
Thanks a lot for this great manual/presentation. I had EXACTLY the same problem, the plastic piece broke off EXACTLY in the same spot, and looked completely the same. Thanks a lot again, great help!
thanx man ive been trying to figure this one out for a couple weeks. mine broke with my window down so i couldnt figure out how to get the damn thing up. come to figure out it was just those two bolts holding the window in. thanx again
Cool that the video helped out. Yeah, I've learned to try to not put the windows completely down. Leave them up an inch or two, so if the cable breaks, you can pull the window up with your hand to get it closed. Remember this. According to Hyundai, we have no window problems with their cars. Makes ya wonder what kind of Korean herbs they are smoking, doesn't it?
Glad to do it. The Lazy Comic, +1. Hundai Motors -400. (As in we just screwed them out of 400 bucks since you're doing it yourself). AWESOME. (Good God, I sound like I'm trapped in the 80's). AWESOME?
Thanks for posting this video. Both of the rear windows seem to broken on my 2000 Elantra. Is this process relatively the same on the rear windows as it is the front?
Yes, but you get new motors with the back unit. (Which is why they are so much more money). Sadly, the motors never die. It's just the crappy built hardware.
Wait, are you saying to make sure I get the motors with the rear units? Or are you just saying that it usually comes with it? I am seeing many for sale online without the motor.
Thanks for showing how to remove & install this! I own a 2000 Elantra & the front passenger side regulator just went out. In addition to the front passenger door needing a new regulator, there is another problem. The front driver side controls will drop the 2 back seat windows but won't raise them up. You can only raise the 2 back seat windows by reaching over & raising them from the backseat controls. What can that be? The backseat regulators can't be bad if they go up & down right? Thanks!
Sorry about the delay on getting back on this. I would suspect the driver's side control switches for your rear door problem. Either there is a wire off inside of the door panel, (highly unlikely), or those 2 switches are bad, which is what I would suspect, but check the wires first, since that is a free repair. Either way, you're going to have to take the panel off of the front door, and while you're in there, lubricate the metal track that your window slides up and down on. Just a tip there.
I'm a 43 year old female and I just replaced the rear left regulator on the 2000 Elantra that I bought for my 16 year old. Shop quoted me $324...I found the NEW part on eBay for $100 and replaced it myself in about 10 minutes (even before I watched this video!) It was easy!!! Got a few scraped knuckles in the process but well worth the $200 plus savings!!! If I can do it, anyone with a few basic tools and about 30 minutes can make it happen!
Thank goodness i found this video. This just happened to both my rear windows. Someone broke in and took the radio because the window fell down. So now i can finally fix this irritating problem!!
It also happened to the drivers side window about 8 months ago. Hyundai's.....
I'm glad this video can help you out with this repair. I really wish I had the cash to hire an attorney and get a class-action suit going against Hyundai on this problem. Your radio being stolen makes me reazlize how serious this problem is. I've also worried about somebody crawling through a "down" window that's broken, while you're in the car stopped at an intersection. And with all the robberies these days, that's not a far stretch of the imagination.
Funny expression... shit itself. That's great mate. Gotta remember that line. Yeah... I hear that all the time, about me being "angry"... but kinda funny at the same time. I just get so wrapped up in whatever mission/cause that I'm "bitching" about... and people crack up. I figure if I at least make them think about what the situation is, I've done my job. I was complaining the other day at the voting polls. They told me to contact my poliiticans. I told them, I should go bark at the moon first.
