  • @zuiplap2 it's really about the port of antwerp, but "le port d'anvers" that didn't fit the rhythm as well as le port d'amsterdam :-P

  • Love the passion!!!

  • This is a song of mine country Holland, Amsterdam

  • Simone cowel would have trouble keeping his mouth closed in AWWW!!!! no word to describe how passionate it is!

  • "Try not to get chills watching this."

    Dammit I failed again!

  • holy shit... they don't make them like this anymore

  • Rod Mckuen wrote that Brel was the finest performer he had ever heard. Listening to this Its hard to argue with that statement. The Chills, yes I too felt the chills watching Brel on the tube. Thanks to Youtube, I now know what I missed never seeing Mr Brel live.

  • Dans le port d'Amesterdam il'ya des sanges et des bourgeois qui sont comme les cochons, etc etc etc

  • Wow! Just WOW!. Blow your socks off WOW! Now, I have owned the album "Jacque Brel is alive and living in Paris for years" and I consider it a masterpiece BUT listening to the maestro himself singing it is amazing. I have goosebumps. Thank you for posting this.

  • Tremendous performance, never heard this version before it really gets the emotions flowing. Epic it is.

  • genius. punk rock in a suit and tie with orchestra, 20 years before the sex pistols

  • The reason he leaves so abruptly at the end is because he just remembered that he forgot to skin the teenagers he had hanging in his basement

  • @robinvaucelles how the hell are they supposed to wear earplugs when they clearly cannot have any ears? ;)

  • Qué pasión y qué intensidad en la interpretación.

  • gets me every time, chills everywhere

  • Les auteurs-compositeurs-interprètes sont souvent les meilleurs pour rendre leurs oeuvres : ils les comprennent profondément. J'apprécie rarement les pâles copies à la modes des interprètes qui s'y frottent...

  • Another famous Belgian. He is great.

  • The poetry and passion--even without the instruments, one can listen to him sing so eloquently.

  • He just grabbed me by the collar clear out of my chair and shook the spine out of me.

  • His mouth must have had a metal key and instructions to wind and twist when it was first opened.

  • I believe every word. You never get that any more. Huge credit to the song writers and composers as well though, although it comes to life in all splendour thanks to Brel's performance. MAGNIFICENT

  • What is Fuck 9 Dislikes ? 1000 + Like Great!

  • Unreal! Its cool to see where ideas for the likes of Bryan Ferry and Bowie come from. You can see where they took some of their cues.

  • And the SLUTS that they tow beneath the Streetlamp.

  • Think I am pretty young here (at 41) :P But this gets me goosebumpy everytime I hear it.

  • @Yandarus1 I'm 21 and just discovered this song this week. Completely blown away! :)

  • @Englishlilly

I was 17 when I first discovered Brel in the mid 60's. He made just one appearance in London and I managed to get a ticket. I still have that programme and cherish it. One of the great musicians of my life - and now, I hope, yours too.

  • Don't know what to say really.

I have heard everyone from Alex Harvey to Scott Walker cover his songs. Genius probably describes it best.

  • I've only just started to listen to Jacques Brel recently. He's incredible!!

  • c' est fantastique! J'aime la version de David Bowie, mais il ne peut même pas s'approcher de ce mec

  • davanti a tanto artista il silenzio nn basta, bisogna necessariamente genuflettersi..

    Riposa in pace Grand Jacques!

  • Jacques Brel, el orgullo de Belgica, un excelente interprete francofono

  • Indeed, Brel was a belgian singer.

His father was from the West of Flanders and his mother was from Brussels.

    Brel lived in Brussels.

My english is very bad, so i hope you understand what i mean. ;-)

  • @Samooke Your English is very good. You made no mistakes whatsoever. :)

  • I recently was lucky to listen to a Dutch adaption of this great song performed by Rapalje ( v=JAtX9tftsew )

  • Merci, merci, merci!

  • perchè c'è sempre gente che deve mettere "non mi piace"?? almeno abbiate la decenza di spiegare a tutti perchè non vi piace: prendetevi la responsabilità di ciò che fate! aimè..

  • This is done with emotion

  • Magnifique!

  • lenda

  • Légende

  • @BeqaGeorgian

I think some people disliked this video just because of your comment :p

  • Brel loved Amsterdam because he felt free here....in the years he was in Holland there was a lot of alcohol and drugs - the good old stuff.....you have to live here to understand just how free the place is and no-one is much interested what you do. Tolerance level is exptremely high....Now, 2011 it has changed. More agressive and less tolerance. Unfortunate that the atmosphere from the 60's and 70''s got lost.

  • wonderful, especially when I live here in Amsterdam - he is/was from the south of Belgium - ''n Waal. in dutch. But he was very very popular in Holland. Still is. His delivery is amazing - he throws everything into it.

  • The beauty of Brel is that he not only tells a story but he also lives it!

  • Amazing! His emotional delivery is the absolute best I have ever heard.

  • @irreverentreverend I suppose that you don't know his other songs, many of them about Belgium, like "Le Plat Pays", "Marieke". He sang the songs he wrote both in French and in Flemish. At a period when rock and roll and the Beatles were the new wave in Europe, singers with meaningful songs had to have great talents to be able to survive. If you like this song, I suggest you get a copy of "Brel is alive and well and living in Paris" his songs sung in English. You can find it at amazon.

  • @markbargen Thank you for the information! I first heard 'Amsterdam' performed by John Denver, of all people, back when he first went solo. After that I heard versions by Pete Seeger and David Bowie but all the English versions seemed to be lacking when compared to the original.

I count Mr. Brel among the small handful of songwriter/performers that can translate feelings and emotions into music, along with Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. Amazing performances. I will look into the Amazon thing.

  • Where can I find the lyrics in English?

  • @lizclegg david bowie made a version. not nearly as good as this one

  • kakao.

  • legendary

  • Mein Gott, ist der gut

  • I never knew this was based on Greensleaves until I looked on wikipedia.

  • Perfection on stage....every singer in the world should see this

  • Probably one of my favorite live performances ever...

    Sublime, really.

It comes to show that there's much more to performing than just singing.

  • Now THAT'S what I call a committed performance.

  • C'est ma chanson et c'est mon pays la Belgique!

  • You Belgians are priviledged to have such an amazing song smith, truly world class.

  • I wish a few singers from present time could display half the passion this man did.

    Amazing!

  • Does anyone have an English translation handy? I love Brel's songs but curious about why he's so worked up about the stuff that goes on in Amsterdam ... when I worked there in 1977, it was all pretty progressive and left-field, and is probably more so by now. I've loved my encounters with Dutch folk ever since... Maybe a woman (or gentleman?) let him down..

  • @redcrowdemon scott walker has done versions of many of his song. this one included. id say he is the best man for the job also.

  • @redcrowdemon scott walker has done many of his song. this one included

  • @redcrowdemon ..the obvious answer is to listen to bowies version...though i dont know if its a true translation..its good enough for this sailor

  • @keef40 Thanks you guys (or gals). Good advice. I usually find Bowie's singing a bit anaemic and lacking emotion but his take on Amsterdam is surprisingly good. But to my ears, Scott Walker's is even better...

  • @redcrowdemon ..i wasnt making a comparison, just trying to help with a translation. personally, i find bowies singing is fucking wonderful

  • 5 are fans of bieber :(

  • und der franze angelt fröhlich weiter ...

  • I am from Amsterdam and this indeed gives me chills

  • The sad thing is, that if an singer wrote a song like this today the day, and acted the exact same as Jacques Brel did in this video, he wouldn´t be very popular.

    People would find him weird.

Maybe it really is true, that everything was better in the past.

In my eyes it sure was.

  • @TheWorldinProgress He'd be very popular if he was writing this now. Maybe even more so than 50 years ago.

  • I can never get enough of this.

  • rarely does one see such a "real" performance.

  • remember a few yrs ago the guardian decided that elton john, who didn't write lyrics!, was one of the great songwriters and didn't mention brel in the list!!!

  • wonderful

  • just amazing , people must learn french to understand this song

  • Worth learning French for.

  • those 3 dislikes can jump in a river.

  • Watching this video always reminds me of a photo of Billie Holiday taken by Dennis Stock. And both give me chills whenever I listen to their music.

  • Interesting. I don't understand a word (although I know the translation) but nevertheless it sends shivers down my spine. They don't make them singers like that no more.

  • amazing!

  • Who disliked this??

  • @liranel1 Probably someone who missed the 'like' button. ;D

  • mish en scene does this wonderfully.

  • I've never seen 400 likes against 0...

    Perfect!

  • @BeqaGeorgian so sad it's already over...

  • @BeqaGeorgian

    YOU BASTARD

NOW YOU WILL GET IDIOTS DISLIKING IT BECAUSE ITS 'IRONIC'

  • @rollokb2 chill out

  • klasse!!

  • klasse!!!

  • Superb

  • Heaven has got what we miss here on Earth. No Artist has ever reached Jacques Brel eversince.WHAT A PASSION!!!

  • This is fantastic - Do I detect an influence from "Greensleeves"?

  • @TheMoot1 Well it is Greensleeves.

  • I am speechless

  • Incredible. Just incredible.

  • this makes you feel sorry for todays performers

    amazing...

  • Really love all of his performances of this song and also Scott Walker's English version. I think this is the best filmed performance of it I've seen yet.

  • he is simply genial :o)

  • what a perfomance... this is a greek version of this song... not to compare, it's pointless...

    watch?v=Xk0gHyMUbSo

  • People like him NEVER die !!!

  • He is drunk by love. Great poet.

  • i would not have heard of this man were it not for ziggy

  • Amazing

  • Holy crap, the last verse is so punk rock. What a talent.

  • je regarde et regarde encore cette vidéo depuis des années, j'écoute et réécoute cette fabuleuse chanson depuis près de cinquante ans, et toujours, toujours, je ressens le même frisson, la chair de poule...

  • Fantastique!

  • OHH MY GOD

  • Art in it's purest form...

  • a star who turnt into a bright shining SUPERNOVER.Unforgetable!!!!!

  • I've obsessively watched this repeatedly for the last 6 months or so now, still my favorite performance of my favorite song by my favorite man

  • J`AIME BEAUCOUP BREL :)

  • J`AIME BEAUCOUP BREL :)

  • this song is soo beautiful

  • This is beyond singing, this is art in its purest form. I'm very grateful that i am named to this man.

  • Really pours his heart into everyone song

  • Anyone notice Jacques had huge hands?

  • @sudlkas and a big mouth as well. he was a hudge man, in fact

  • I hope everybody knows that Jacques Brel is not French but Belgian, from the french part of course.

He is one of the very few persons to make myself feel proud of my country, one of the most beautiful lyricists i know.

  • @JackyPommelo I agree... when I learned he was from Belgium, i felt an instant burst of pride. :)

  • @JackyPommelo he's actually from Brussels, he spoke and sang in both languages!

  • @carolinebacho

    That's true, my mistake :)

  • @JackyPommelo I don't get why he makes you feel proud of your country. yes, he's great at what the does and he's from belgium, but he isn't promoting belgium and the the government/country of belgium has nothing to do with his success. It'd be like saying you're proud of the vatican because someone who happens to be born catholic is a great soccer player.

  • @pcx34

    yeah whatever

  • @JackyPommelo you misunderstood. my best relationship was with a belgian. i love the country and its people. my point was if brel sang about his love of the country, its people and history, then i could understand your point, but he's more about the french language so you could say he makes you proud to speak french. but to say he makes you proud to be belgian is like saying he has black hair and so do you so it makes you proud that you have black hair.

  • @pcx34

    I repeat: yeah, whatever

  • @JackyPommelo I think i learned something from you. I guess it has to do with the size of the country. in a smaller country there will be fewer successes so just being from that country is enough. in a larger country, you can't possibly feel that way about all of them. I come from a larger country so unless a celebrity does something to promote my country, he doesn't inspire any feeling of patriotism. It's all a matter of perspective.

  • @pcx34

    Badunka-tshhhh

  • @JackyPommelo he might be from the "French part" but he's of Fleming descent. I hope you peoples can live together. As Jaques himself wanted, perhaps some sort of national service where you all had to live a year with a family from the other culture. Belgium, the country with the best beer, the best chocolate, and the best singer to grace this earth, you might justifiably be proud!

  • @JackyPommelo Actually, Brel isn't from the French speaking part of Belgium, he's from Brussels (which is bilingual)

  • @JackyPommelo AMEN! i'm from belgium. :)

  • @JackyPommelo

THE BEST lyricist who has ever lived, in my book! No one else even comes close.

  • @Babyhowdy233

How about Ian Curtis? He at least comes close no? :)

  • @JackyPommelo

NO, Curtis was good, but Brel is ASTOUNDING! :)

  • i wish i had that much emotion in my body as Brel did have in his left little finger..

  • tl;dr

    year? album? torrent?

  • Where are the Jaques Brels of today?
