LOL, There is no riser tube, and the water level is too low to pull anything, hence why it looks like a tube with an air-stone in it. Because that's exactly what it is. This thing is not skimming a thing.

@ ApexWestup - If you're skimmer isn't running 24/7, it's useless. Not something that you can just "turn off". Either run s skimmer, or don't. Skimmers work by building up slime layers of dissolved organic compounds. Turning it off, defeats the purpose, and starts it over again.

Understanding how a skimmer works is simple (depending on how concener you are of micro bubbles)

1. waterflow inlet ino cylinder chamber creates vortex.

2. water outlet AS LOW AS POSSIBLE from the same chamber.

3. WOODEN airstone creates hella bubbles.

4. bottleneck top of hte chamber creates what will appear to be an oozing foam volcano.

5. collection cup around it.

Water flows in, contaminants are attracted to air buble surface, float up and get collected, clean water flows from 2.
