Morgana King is an incredible singer and performer. She takes a song that has been done to death and breathes new life into it and filters it through her jazz artist personality and sensibilities yet remains true to the composers pop intentions. You can recognize and identify with the song. She adapts but never distorts.I have great respect for this singer and her instrument. Her "Sleepin Bee" is awesome
This is an example of how Jazz singers were trying to keep up with the changes in popular taste. Rock had replaced Swing as the dance rhythm of choice and it was sink or swim for many Jazz singers. Morgana, like the rest of them, tried her best, but Standards will always be her forte. A truly great voice, she always exhibited total control of her instrument.
@beatmakersuniversity Issac did a good job of arranging and orchestrating, which is where his true talents lie. He has never been more than a thrd rate singer in my book. It's the instrumental portions of his songs people remember not his vocals. Morgana King's only instrument is her voice and she plays the hell out of it.
I think there can be more than one fabulous, out of this world recording of a tune ... Cyndi clears the table as far as gut-wrenching and heartfelt ... but Isaac Hayes version still gives me goosebumps and touches my very soul every single time.
I think we have two bests here.
And Morgana breathes a totally different type of "life" into it ... she's remarkable for sure, just more specialize... not everyone is going to like the jazz styling.
Indeed...I feel the same as you express and also what do you feel when you listen this Heavenly Lady sing 'When The World Was Young'? And how about...'I am a Leaf'?...Her sounds just move me beyond this Earth...Thank you for your perfect comments...Blessings..
The magic of Morgana King's voice is on great display in this wonderful live clip...a loose and soulful version of "Walk On By" is also featured on her great "Gemini Changes" which sadly is hard to find like many of her other classics but if you can get the 3CD set on Reprise, don't miss it if you love great singing...it is the ultimate!
She can take something that has been done by every jazz singer, and give it new life, and another facet, that no-one believed was there....mmmmm!!!!!Superb !!!!!!!
this woman is a musical genius; what she does with is a tune is magic! I could never understand why she wasn't more well known; maybe she wanted it that way?
rainbowlou....you and I should meet for lunch because I put this video to my favs yesterday....as well I spent a great deal of time with nina simone....generational????....also do you remember Miriam Makeba? What a beautiful woman in face, spitit and voice.

too lesbian and too witchy!

@cay311 - Hey idiot, Morgana was married twice . . . both times to jazz musicians, trumpeter Tony Fruscella and Willie Dennis (trombone).
You're a schmuck for saying that ! ! !

Love this.
But Cyndi Lauper, after all these years, after all these artists, has the definitive verson of "Walk on By."
She strips it down to the bare bones and breaks your heart.
Which is what the song's about.
Not vocal pyrotechnics.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Morgana King. She can do things Cyndi couldn't touch.
Just not this.

Gotta say I half-agree, Beat. I LOVE Isaac Hayes' version.
I guess what does it for me is that Cyndi --
" -- strips it down to the bare bones and breaks your heart" as I said.
After Cyndi's newer version, Isaac's earlier recorded version sounds overproduced -- though it's still my favorite version on my R&B playlists.
Just personal taste. Cynci's minimalist thing knocks me out.

I think you forgot one little version by Ms Warwick(e) herself. Don't take the original for granted. It is still quite amazing.

The first part of the song is pure genius but the finish is a bit eccentric. Nevertheless I can't get enough of this lady's musicality.
