  • I love her

  • i wacht this on a bus back yo home

  • This doesn't even look like a tabaco commericial

  • I agree with the driving instructor. I don't think there is a day that goes past that i don't think about stealing a Ferrari and driving it into the horizon, or a brick wall. Yeah life, it really sticks the knife in and breaks it off. Good movie though.

  • She reminds me of Stacey Solomon for some reason :)

  • I find the character greatly unbelievable. It's like she lives in her own stupid world of candy clouds and paper flowers...

  • Only reason I checked this is because it had the golden tomato 2008. Never heard of this film, they should have promoted it more.

  • I paint monsters for a living, write stories about distant galaxies and I own a large beard. Honestly this is my favourite film.

  • @MeetTheCryptid Liar

  • @qwertyuiopdan1 Man, there was no need for that. Why the hell would I want to lie about that? I'm not going to get into detail about how I'm not lying, because I don't wanna fill this thread with my shit.

But if you actually want to know what dude, throw me a message I'll get into detail. :)

  • Sally should be cast for the role of Amy Winehouse's life story! .....she looks just like her!

  • The ending was kind of... unfinished though.

  • @21xxx21 that's why it's perfect, you just want more

  • Love the optimistic attitude only wish people could be more like that about life. The constant giggles and twitches made the character a little unbelievable until we saw the little serious sides to her but the giggling at everything spoiled it a little. Likeable person though no harm in her and only if there were more people like her!

I would probably watch this movie again if it is repeated on TV or film 4.

  • The only british film i like.

  • i loved it ñ_ñ

  • EN RA HA !

  • This movie is going to be on TVONE in New Zealand on sunday night, nice change from all the American killing movies they always have on!

  • @yarrowworks it just started :)

  • very nice movie

    I like Sally :)

  • This movie had a weak plot, but it was a very good and fun film, that girl is so cheerful and dumb! Its a great movie.

  • Life is sweet

  • what is the name of the song at the end?? this looks amazing :)

  • @alliekat4 Lily Allen - LDN :)

  • Poppy's personality is POSITIVELY lovely!

I mean, the opening scene for her is darling. "I like your hat!" She says to the cashier while looking through a bookstore and then going outside to find that her bike is stolen, but responds with a carefree smile, "Oh NO! :) It's didn't even say good-bye!"

After that, I knew it was going to be a fabulous movie :D

  • this is great !! going to watch this in webmovietube

  • Poppy reminds me of Imogen Heap, am I the only one who think so?

  • my oppinion this movie looks crap

  • Lily Allen LDN is perfect for this show

  • and its embarrassing the way British film makers are changing everything they do just to suit the braindead American market

  • @AnagramISP Oh cheer up and watch a wider variety of films, you miserable git.

  • Films these days just seem to be a long series of adverts strung together to resemble a film

  • - don't u wanna have a baby?

    - no thanks i just had a kebab!

    me: rofllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • Please do check out my interpretation of a HGL scene on my channel. Obviously not a scratch on the great Mike Leigh, but an attempt.

  • I almost turned this movie off after the first half hour, cause i found Poppy to be an irritating ype cartoon character, but it got better later on.I love the drivers ed instructor cause Im a lot like him.

  • Thumbs up if you think this is one of the most underrated films of all time! :D

  • @VincentBrooke1

Well At least it got a nod for best for screenplay at the Oscars.....

  • @VincentBrooke1 no its one of the most overrated. everybody was telling my dad that this was so great and all the critics said it was great, and we watch it, and it was a BIG disappointment. Sorry, can't say i don't get it, cause i do, just that it wasn't good.

  • @myfacesp Never mind, no such thing as a universal positive. Was there anything specifically you didn't like about it? Or was it just, 'I didn't like Poppy, she was annoying, blah blah...'?

  • @VincentBrooke1 haha, I think that's a legitimate reason not to like the movie, but yeah, specifically, there was no plot, which I think can still make a good movie, if it is done correctly, it was just done so poorly. The stories were so boring and the characters were uninteresting.

  • @myfacesp Not really; her hightened happiness is juxtaposed with the dull normality around her, which is what makes the situation funny, her annoying, and sometimes the atmosphere tense. But anyway, I think it did have a plot: her attempts to seduce and also to help the instructor predominantly, but largly it's an observation of her happy life; her casual polygamy and bisexuality, her play at school (not without its sadness), her enjoyment of her own silliness. I like it. But to each his own. :)

  • @VincentBrooke1 Yeah, I can appreciate that. Agree to disagree.

  • @VincentBrooke1 How's it underrated? It received EXTREMELY positive reviews, dumbass.

  • So glad I watched this movie before seeing the trailer I hate Lily Allen.

  • this movie sucks

  • @dutchgirl90210 Nah... You must be thinking of Avatar. ;)

  • @VincentBrooke1 no i love Avatat this movie is stupid and a waste of mine time

  • @dutchgirl90210 XD Your grammar and spelling makes me laugh, please feel free to send me another hilarious message.

  • @VincentBrooke1 ow fijn dat ik je aan het lachen maak... probeer hier maar een grammatica of spellings fouten in te vinden. wie denk jij wel niet dat je bent om zo te doen English is not my first langues you stupid tssss

  • @dutchgirl90210 HAHAHAHAHAHA! Thank you so much for your comment. It really made my day! XD

  • @VincentBrooke1 fijn voor je dat ik je dag goed heb gemaakt maar uh je weet nog eens wat ik tegen je zeg dus je slaat echt onzin uit

  • @dutchgirl90210 And an ookedy bookedy wookedy to you to, sweetums!

  • i actually felt really sad near the end, when after pulling poppy's hair and everything, scott said something like "same time again next week/sunday?" then she goes no.. heartbreaking :/

  • I really love this inspirational film. I feel blissful happy every time I watch it. It teaches me about openness and love and about being happy.

    Amazing!

  • yatta!!!11

  • I wish i could be happy as Poppy.....loved this movie!!

  • Insidious. I noted middle aged ladies in the cinema not realising when the joke had gone too far to see a disturbed man as object of amusement & ridicule, was perhaps a little too much like cathartic revenge on men because they so often failed to bring about the happiness promised by the spirit of 68.

  • @Xenostrobe So, this is indeed a movie intended for a female audience, right?

  • @PollockQT A particular type perhaps. The type who are into deliberately goading, and when you bite they go "Whhhoooooooooo!! Now, now!" or (all innocence) "What? You're over reacting!" I think it's often because they want to sleep around with unsuitable men without feeling guilty, they goad men, who are unfairly marginalised by the culture they perpetuate, into being 'nasty sickoes' who 'deserve' to be marginalised. Truly wicked.

  • @Xenostrobe Yeah, I had a gut feeling it would be exactly like that, thanks for saving me time and emotional distress... Just the trailer gave the feeling that this may be a movie to avoid, regardless what most female critics are saying (surprisingly enough) now I know for sure.

When a movie is portrayed mainly from a clearly subjective female perspective, and most positive critics come from women, it's usually because they are praising hatred against men while excusing themselves from it...

  • @PollockQT Well, I'd be telling a lie if I said I didn't derive at least a little smug satisfaction from your response... however, just maybe if you did watch it, you might find yourself thinking 'What was he on about?' "over reacting, indeed". I don't think so though. There is a scene on youtube where the guy flips out... that might be worth a look; if you haven't already seen it. Ms Potter, now there's a film I enjoyed, with a strong female portrayal (I thought Bridget Jones was trashy).

  • If you want to see a proper movie with heart, comedy and optimism, why not try something like: 'The Worlds Fastest Indian' bitof a curve ball I know. But it has a high feel good factor. Maybe not as soft as HGL. Or I dunno... About Schmidt. The complete opposite! You don't have to be a miserable git to enjoy watching one. Or 'Stand by me'? ...ANYTHING but this pillock-fest!

...hehe 'pillockfest', that just made me piss-laugh!

    I kill me! ; )

  • @DirectedBySteve Pillockfest is my new favourite word, I quite liked the film though. Sorry!

  • The key to understanding Poppy is not with the appellation of "happy go lucky" (an outsider's view of her, I think is what Leigh means it to be). It is that she has made a conscious decision to be OPEN. In other words, she forgoes the kind of common defenses everyone possesses in order to keep the world at bay. This is not to suggest that she is naive; she clearly has boundaries and has a very solid sense of herself.

  • isit me or is the woman a right stunner lol

  • good old, strong and Great Britain now look like this lucky (or stupid) teacher for black and brown children. This is the end of the West

  • in what way is she retarded?????

  • she's like stacy from x factor

  • this is the perfect woman for me...all the time loving and happyness and not some blond bitch from this days that spit you in the face after sex

  • Agreed, she's certainly a lovely soul in this film, if only more were like her in real life.

  • and before too

  • OMG...poppy....that was me 10 years ago. Loved this movie. It was nice to be reminded that it's OK to be happy and positive...and FUCK OFF to all the poeple who can't handle seeing others happy and having fun.

  • really good movie. Got to be a success if it's reaping a 'hate Poppy' attitude. The fact that you either LOVE her or HATE her indicates a job well done here. We all know people like her in life and have the same attitude towards them, eh?

  • If you are looking for quality, then you should get the Blu-ray copy, but for now you can watch it at [CINEMACENTRAL]dottinfo . Enjoy, Pete01!

  • i hated this movie :|

it really got on my nervesss

and btw me hating the movie doesnt me that i hate being happy in real life.

  • people who say they bitterly despise Poppy throughout the movie are probably as angry and cynical as the driving instructor in the movie

  • @oxyvince my thoughts exactly. I'm glad I don't live in the dark world that the driving instructor lives in. I'd rather be like Poppy!

  • you live in a dark world you just edit it to how you WANT to see it. try tell the millions off iraqis who have been left homeless or the hundred of thousands that have been murdered that it is not a dark world. its down to the many ignorant retard characters like 'poppy' that we dont give a shit and to few people like the driving instructor that is capable of critical thinking. (in essence) Not allowing wars to continue by protesting against government. Films like this are 100% PROPAGANDA

  • @sammysnakejones the driving instructor was hardly a "critical thinker". He was a conspiracy theorist, afraid of the world. There's a huge difference. I don't want to be that way.

  • I agree!!!! Poppy is not portrayed as a dummy. She's a teacher who is kind and intuitive enough to recognize when others are hurting and actually give a shit. If that makes her "annoying", then so be it. I'd rather be annoyingly positive than like the driving instructor.

  • @sammysnakejones

So it's wrong to enjoy life in the face of adversity? XD Yes there's horror, yes there's devastation, yes there's blackness sin and evil in the world, but if you let it drag you down then you just become another part of it. Living your life in the midst of all that /crap/ (war, poverty, prejudice) and retaining a positive attitude is really courageous. People like poppy are the ones who start can drives and feed the homeless. The driving instructor is just a bigot.

  • @oxyvince Ha.youre right.I couldnt stand Poppy for that reason.

  • @oxyvince I don't know if I'd agree. I found the film was very warm and Poppy was not unlikeable, but I don't think she was believable, Leigh went over the top with her quirkiness and she appears gormless and slightly not all there a lot of the time. I love Mike Leigh, I just didn't feel he pulled it off with Poppy.

  • Why are people scared of happy people? I want to understand?!

  • Love this film so real and attitude

  • shit movie wanted to punch her the whole movie through

  • me as well

i was glad when her instructor wacked her on the head

  • @oreo44991 LMAO!

  • This is a fantasy film on a micro budget. Only Mike Leigh could pull that one off. This is 'Pan's Labyrinth' without the fancy effects. "The Road to Reality? Don't want to be going there".

  • This film is wonderful :)

What I want to know is the music in the first minute of this clip, where can I get it, it seems to be non-existent, and it is a lovely piece of music :)

  • What is the song at 1:05

    thanks

  • Lilly Allen - LDN (london)

  • poppy talks just like stacey solomon!!!!

  • This movie is Satanic

  • Another movie that tells you it is better to be stupid and happy, than smart and mad. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.

How about smart, get mad, do something about it, and then get happy?

  • Being mad is obviously not a monopoly of the smart.

Oh and i think you meant to write "Snark. Snark. Snark."

  • @virgy45 but Poppy IS smart. She's smart and happy.

  • I watched this movie yesterday and I really liked it. I wish I had a friend like Poppy.

Btw, is the driving instructor meant to be the abuser of the little boy at Poppy's school?

    That's what I thought...

  • It got raving reviews...

I don't get it... nothing happened in it. The girl is unrealistically happy... and just fucking annoying to be honest.

She starts taking driving lessons with a polar opposite miserable git of an instructor.

She finds a boy friend and the driving instructor gets very angry and jealous.

    She stops having driving lessons.

    The end...

Unfunny dull and annoyingly predictive innuendo dialogue.

    FUCKING SHIIIIT!

  • @DirectedBySteve ... LMAO.. you sure you aren't that driving instructor... i wonder if he was based on you..... LOL!... its not that you are wrong that it doesn't seem to be about anything specific.... but its was different to see a film about someone who is so unbelievably happy...

  • @afrochic68 As long as you don't mean I LOOK like him??? ; )

Erm, you're sure right about 'different'...

Cummon, the film was rubbish and you know it! lol

Poppy is just the reincarnate of 'Wendy' from 'Life is Sweet' ...another annoy Mike Leigh character. I don't know much about Mr Leigh, but after seeing both these films, I don't think I could pluck up the courage to see another.

  • @DirectedBySteve looool I don't know what u look like! looool what other reviews of films have u written about? I wanna know if they are as succinct, rude and funny as this one!!! ??

  • @afrochic68 I hope I didn't offend you ; )

To be honest, I've not really reviewed many/any films. If I do it's usually in an email to a friend. Usually a one word email: "Shit" or "Cool" lol - with this new l33t sp33k, do people even still use the word 'cool'? I dunno?!?

  • @afrochic68 cont. I don't usual make rude remarks, at least not with my 'public' hat on. I'd hate to be one of those people that offends. But this film... THIS FILM! Urgh. I just HAD to SPEAK OUT. The public have the right to know when film makers are getting away with murder. ...Some people are just ill-informed and they just passively like something because they know little else.

..it was on TV, so at least I didn't pay to watch it. ; )

  • I watched it last night too by mistake, and what a mistake. Some people are actually like Poppy and just don't know when to stop.(for me) the question in this film is...who is worse? Poppy for being constantly optimistic or cynical people? Unfortunatley in this world, its the latter. Everyone is different and it just shows how intolerable this world can be to people who are happy :D

  • SmellySagittarius - I'm a paid film reviewer. I can see what the film is trying to achieve but unfortunately the film falls unbelievably short of the mark. The audience is immediately alienated by Poppy, who is a little more than slightly irritating along with the rest of the supporting cast. There is no jeopardy in the film and as a result is exceedingly dull. Nothing is resolved or learned and anything that annoys the viewer for 90 minutes can not, in any sense of the word be considered good.

  • @PinballTV Thanks ; )

I wish I could be paid to review films. How do you land a gig like that?!?

I like to think I know when a film is good or not, unfortunately, I don't think I could be as eloquent as you. In my defence, I did post immediately after watching the film... erm you could say I was fuming? lol

  • saw this last night on tv - it was brilliant.

  • A friend of mine attended me to this film yesterday. He said the film is about me, that I should get the credits for using my life for this film. lol Can't wait to see it.

  • The characters were neat but boring and kinda sad...:(

  • Lovelyyyyy! Poppy's great!

    Don't forget Enraha!!

  • Aww man, I love that girl XD *hugs her* I'd take her for a drink, then we'd go to salsa lessons and then off to the park or something! We'd get on XD

  • i love this movie, wasnt to sure what to think of it at first, but its different and i think it has a deep underlining of contrast of characters that we encounter, from poppy to scott being completely diverse. But not every film you see you always like.

  • I hate this movie ;x I slept watch it yesterday... so boring and I don't like it ...

  • For all the people who don't 'get' this movie, it's simply about questioning people's differing opinions about what happiness is & how relative it is to each individual. She is only conveyed as slightly irritating/retarded in the film in order to show how alienated people are from happiness in their everyday lives (to the point where it seems unnatural to be as happy as Poppy in the film). It's not meant to have a plot-centred storyline at all.

    What an amazing film.

  • Everyone's entitled to an opinion, so while it's an interesting comment on our dissatisfaction as a species, ultimately it comes off as unrealistic and yes, very annoying.

  • I ope to god your going into psychology cause god know we need gifted therapists in the field.

  • @SmellySagittarius Couldn't have put it better myself. If I smiled as often as Poppy does, I'd be placed in a mental asylum by teatime.

  • Comment removed

  • @SmellySagittarius This is not at all a knock, against you, but the fact that you're trying to explain this film, to people who don't "get" it, rather scares me.

  • I just didnt get this movie, there are parts really out of place, and sorry Sally but your snub at the Oscars was well deserved, and give back that Golden Globe!!!

  • This looks really good, think i'll give it a go.

    Like Sally Hawkins.

  • Brilliant movie and brilliant interpretation by Sally Hawkins, she's really, really good !

  • she's always happy even in the bad times, movie has a critique of society who are always in a bad mood!

"You keep on rowing, and I'll keep on smiling."

  • if the main character wasn't so awfully irritating and retarded, it would have been a good movie...

  • i am watching this movie now-- and i totally agree with. i find her really annoying. the way she laughs is just irritating.

  • thats the point! At least that's the way I saw it. I think she is pretending to be much dumber then she actually is. It's only at the scene with the bum that she shows a bit of her "true" self. And later on with Scott. But otherwise... why do you think she surrounds herself with kids? To keep herself as a child too.

  • This movie was lovely. :D

    I loved it very much.

  • please i need the song of the trailler do you know ?

  • LDN- Lily Allen

  • lilly allen - ldn

  • driving instructors arent usually like eddie marsan. they ask you questions. eddie marsan is also in hancock.

  • calling this 'the British Juno' is an insult. This is MIKE LEIGH ffs

  • i love that movie!

  • Comment removed

  • when i was watching it i didn't understand what was happening really. it doesn't have a plot. and i didn't know that the ending was the ending.

it was fun to watch however.

i think they should of turned it into a series or something.

that would have been good :)

  • Sally Hawkins! <3

The look of this reminds me of a british Juno. Without the teenage pregnancy. XD

But just the feel of it.

I want to see it, it looks great and cheerful. XD

  • Halfway through the movie I was wondering where it was going, but then I just sat back and got immersed in it. At the end, I actually loved that there isn't a 'PLOT'. I think it would have made it a bit too contrived considering Poppy's and Scott's characters.

  • Well, the movie does not really have a plot, but the point is that you see how beautiful life can be without complications...

  • i LOVE this movie too!

and needless to say Sally hawkins in this movie is so amazing.

    super pretty :))

  • oh god i hated this movie so boring.. lol i almost fell asleep

  • Fantastic movie, with a bravura performance by Sally Hawkins (who was robbed of an Oscar nomination for her stunning work.)

  • i love this movie

  • A lovely film that's grown on me immensely after repeat viewings. Mike Leigh is one of the best filmmakers working today.

  • i don't really get what the movie is supposed to be about...

  • There really isn't music of an overall plot. It's mostly just a series of vignettes, and you either buy into it or you don't. I personally loved it (it was my favorite film of last year), but I know quite a few people found the character of Poppy and the general lack of plot to be extremely aggravating.

  • What da fuck happened to Mike Leigh?!

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie! Sally Hawkins is sooooo cute and adorable as "Poppy". This movie ALWAYS makes me feel good after watching it!

  • I laugh.. and laugh.. and laugh... a very nice movie!!! I would see it again!!

  • Amazing movie. thanks Mike Leigh

  • I absolutely loved this movie. LOVED it. I relate a lot to the character and people think I'm a dumbass. :) I don't care because they just don't see how great everything is. Mathew 18:3. You can't reach enlightenment until you become like Poppy.

  • Very nice movie and Sally Hawkins is such a lovely lady :)

  • Movie was decent. Hard to figure out what is going on and because of that it drags on. Some parts of the movie are ROTFL funny =^-^=

Worth seeing if u have seen every movie and need some thing new to watch :)

    *CHEERS*

  • Hate the movie...

Trailer looks good, but the movie is awfull

    Well,for me

  • agree.

  • aaah, this movie is so mind 'gasmingly good!

sally hawkins (her name i hope to god)

is really truly a credit to the human race.

you rock my socks off. ~James

  • This movie struck me as the English Amelie (in a way). It's much earthier, but its love-of-life message is similar. I was very impressed with how the main character, Poppy, wrestles with her happiness when she sees how it brings up other people's pain. A deep film for all its superficial fluff. I loved it.

  • I agree! I immediately thought of Amelie.

  • It is quite similar

  • This looks like the type of movie that will drag on but keep you interested at the same time?

I can't quite work it out but in all fairness I think you can't judge this movie by it's trailer, so I'ma watch it from beginning to end (hopefully). :)

  • Comment removed

  • I LOVE THAT MOVIE!

  • i liked this movie. my ma rented it, otherwise probably never would've watched it, she told me this chick was in layer cake. I thought the guy playing the driving instructor was especially good in it. i like how her character just sort of kept a good attitude no matter what life threw her way. It was a nice change from some of the crap that goes in the theaters lately, so down and miserable most movies these days.
