Beautiful flying which used to be even more beautiful when gliders were launched with the help of rubber ropes util 1970-ties, when the top of the ZAR mountain was levelled to make place for a reservoir of water for the local powerplant. Those days it was a true "bird" flying. I made my 5h solo flight requirement for "silver" soaring there on a wave at almost 3000m. Arc Rajtar

thermal lift is the actual correct wording: being "thermal", it implies the reason for the lift: differnce in temperature. warmer air is lighter than colder, therefore it rises - if the temperature diffence is high enough.

"wave" is created by mechanical change of the airflow direction, most commonly by obstacles like mountains. you can get nice wave in conditions without any "thermal" lift , e.g. air getting warmer at higher altitude -typical warm front.

Can someone please explain what the term "Wave Soaring" means? I have very little understand to gliders other than they have no motor.

@dbull78 wave soaring means a special way of flying in thermals. normal thermals are going up in something like a pillar or tower. waves are thermals which are stretching out over a long way. you can fly a long distance while you are climbing. in waves it is possible to reach altitudes above 10.000 ft MSL. height records are flown with the helps of waves.

@segelflieger08 "waves" are not thermals . thermals result from thermally rising air : hot air is lighter than cold air. waves are created by obstructions in the airflow, similarto waves in a flowing river with stones and boulders creating "waves" above and behind the obstacle.

of course waves are created in an other way than "normal" thermals but the air is rising up in a wave and in a thermal - so a wave is a special form of a thermal, i guess

Good Luck! Gliding is the cheapest way to learn to fly. So you should start off there.
