Malaysian people's language is the "formal" and "standard" (well most of them). Some bruneian languages sound like english words for example; we bruneians don't usually say "seluar dalam" (underwear), we say "spendet" it sounds somewhat similar to "spandex" :D

So, people from Kuala Lumpur whose language is closer to std Malay often say "pagi semalam" to mean "yesterday morning". But in Kedah and rest of North, the term "pagi semalam" is weird to 'em coz to how could it be both "pagi" (morning) and "semalam" (last night) at same time? "semalam" and "malam" semalam mean "last night" in Kedah but "kelmarin" is "yesterday"

Sorry Dude...actually there is no such thing as 'borrowing' words. The epistemology of linguistic or the origin of languages is often mislead. 'Adaptation' is more appropriate to be used. This is because the frequency of use and convenience of words adapted for easy understanding. The 'Malays' did not 'import' languages but simply used back words of travelers origin for communication. Some classic Malay words are difficult to be spelled by Roman alphabets or Arabic letters. That explains.

yes we do borrow some Arabic words, but those words we normally use in poetry and literary works.. I personally believe malays not only imported arabs words, but also Farsi, sanskrit, chinese, Dutch, Portuguese and English. However the basic vocabulary and the original words in malay such as akar, mata, telinga, lima, belongs to the Austronesian language family which has its most of its speaker from madagascar right up until Easter islands in the pacific.

Sorry for correcting this.

Malay started to borrow/absorb Arabic words around 1300 A.D or about 700 years ago. It can be traced on the first inscription of "Batu Bersurat Terengganu", written in Jawi (Arabic letters) on 4 Rejab 702 H, corresponds to 22 Februari 1303 A.D (Masihi).

Saying it was occured "before 1000 years ago" is not only inaccurate but will misinform the facts to people.

"702 H (Hijrah)" means Islamic year of 702.

After change it to the world standard year, it becomes 1303 A.D (M - masihi).

So, Jawi wasn't used before 1303 A.D.

Thus, Arabic words started to be used since 1303 A.D., not before 1303 A.D.

TO note, there were other places still not recognised Arabic words even the Jawi script in 14th century though Terengganu (in Malaysia) was using in 14th century.

For example, South Sumatra(in Indonesia). In there, some other people and places were using their own scripts and the local manuscript proved that there were "no Arabic words" there.

The different way is the accent which they are from.. Since in Malaysia we have a lot of state almost every state have their own accent... Some of the word use is also have different meaning from each other in the other state... The northern state (Kedah, Perlis and Pulau Pinang) has almost the same accent. Meanwhile Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Melaka basically use the normal accent.... Need to remember that in everyday words we like to cut off the word..For instance pergi (go) will change to gi

You are right, each state has their own accent, But is not a big problem. As long you used formal form.

Basically for accents it depend on the state that you are staying. However as long as you know the words it should be okay. By the way... for us Malay in many state we would pronounce the last word that ending with "a" to "e".. This is the different between Malaysia and Indonesia.... for example the word Me/I the correct way to pronounce is Sa + Ya.... but for everyday language we would pronouce as Sa+Ye (the e sounds like in the year)... But the writing has to remain the same as Saya.....
