  • this guitar tone is marvelous

  • DAT TONE

  • what guitar is that man

    i want it

  • @69biatchslap Bernie rico jr. jykll model i believe

  • Just watched an interview with Tosin Abasi before this, and it makes this guy look amateur and dumb

  • @barneycockburn This guy did Tosin's first album with him. Apparently Tosin doesn't think he's amateur and dumb.

  • this sounds like veil of maya, born of osiris and stuff but those bands aren't called djent i think?

  • that is some ugly ass music.

    def not for me.

  • @caesar09 I can agree in some cases, it really latches on to you though, especially with a full band. Since djent came around no one has come close to perfecting the style as good as Meshuggah, but Periphery is close up there. I can respect Misha for what he does, as bizarre as it might be to a more traditionally trained musician.

  • How the heck did he learn guitar?

  • @elisprague he is resorting to it. but it is intuitive.. excellent genius musicians such as mozart just heard certain progressions and then they used the theory they were born with to calculate the rest.

this guy is a musical genius

  • @chinaclub misha mansoor a musical genius? LMFAO

  • @GhostsNSt00f he is...

  • GREAT NOISEGATE ON MICROPHONE, GUYS.

  • @Tordah26 he just really likes gates and compressors! ;)

  • @Scarbak123 "Gate EVERYTHING!" - Bulb five minutes before this interview.

  • Maybe you're not good at alternate picking because you hold your pick like a retard.

  • @PeaceDisturber He's holding it in a way that's comfortable to him and works. Now leave him alone and play your guitar.

  • misha mansoor and travis orbin = cool

  • I have the same strap at Misha.

  • best guitar tone ive ever heard

  • This is how music was born, some one who didn't resort to theory to write.

  • @elisprague But surely having half an idea of what youre doing is a bonus. The amount of time its taken him to break these riffs down proves it :P

  • @elisprague people have this misconception that music theory is just a set of arbitrary rules. no. music theory came when people said "ok, we know this sounds good, lets try to understand WHY" thats all it is. the science of music essentially.

  • 2:40

    wat

  • great tone.

  • lol .. to the people talkin bout theory and self taught.. the more you know the better you are.. learned something doesn't hold you back from ANYTHING its the decision made to say hey.. i'm going to write a song using theory which will hold you back.. bad decisions lead to failure.. also if you want a life in the music industry you need to know theory.. its like math.. you'll never need it in life but who's gonna choose someone who doesn't know theory vs. the line behind you who does know it.

  • @peoplesnyukka3 I feel the less you know, the more creative you are. I know very little about the theory ( obviously, you pick some up along the way) but I feel that the more you know, the more in depth you become in dissecting music. I play Prog Rock, a lot of time sig changes and ambient sounds, but i just play what i believe feels right. that's just my way of seeing it, and i'm not saying that you're wrong, i'm just expressing an opinion that works for some people.

  • That tip about hitting every note as a hammer on when tapping is quite clever. I learned something today :)

  • What's the song in the beginning of the video?

  • @JHKHSVJSSRV Buttersnips :D

  • this has been very useful and enlightening :)

  • 3:15 Sonic the hedgehog!!!!!

  • anyone know what his set up is? i have a 7-string ibanez on a line6 spider 3, and my tone suuuucks.

  • @nsted2ba That's because you're using a Line 6 Spider 3 and an Ibanez guitar. I had the same set up at one time & the main issue is the amp. Too over bassy & kinda picky to EQ. and Ibanez guitars are nortorious for being on the cold & sterile side as far as tone. Unless you paid like $1000 for it & it came with EMGs. And as for Misha's set up, He's using a Bernie Rico Jr. 6 in this video but he uses an RG2228 also. And his amp I dont know exactly but it could possibly be a modeler or rack preamp

  • @BeDjentleAZ thanks brah! any suggestions for a new kit?

  • @nsted2ba He uses an Axe fx. Any tone line 6 can provide will suck. Get a new amp brah :)

  • @lazycrazybastard what amp would you recommend? money is no object.

  • @nsted2ba I'd advise getting an axe fx, with a poweramp and run it through a cab.

  • @nsted2ba he uses an axe-fx.....no cabs, no heads...pretty crazy imo but it works for him...too bad they cost like 3 grand lol

  • @HatecrewWarrior666 what's crazy about using a set of hifi powered monitors for your direct sound? even the big metal acts have been running direct with just big empty cabs behind them for no good reason. and the typical cab design is so flawed acoustically. if misha weren't such a gear head i'm sure he could pack all of the guitar rigs into a minivan and still seat 4 adults. think about the logistics of that and then ask what's crazy.

  • @intrepgun lol, calm down dude, i just meant its crazy that he gets his sound from one processor. i think your taking these comments personally for some reason haha

  • @HatecrewWarrior666 sorry. personal stuff with a band that refuses to let go of what they call 'real gear' [shitty crate 412 cabs with half rotted speaker cones] and they're pissy with ME because i have a boutique DI [the darkglass B7K] and no 810 fridge for my bass. meanwhile i'm optimizing a macbook to run 90% of all live show aspects from projected visuals to guitar effects patch changes. i didn't mean to come off like i was taking it out on you, friend. sorry.

  • @intrepgun haha all good. and yeah i play tube but i know how good processors can sound some people are just too old school lol

  • @HatecrewWarrior666 i understand exactly what people love about tube sound. it's pleasing to the ear. however, the mythos that goes with tubes needs to die. the whole '5 tube watts is like 200 solid state watts' and all that kinda stuff. just doesn't hold any water with all the new acoustical science that's been done since pete townshend acquiesced to his roadies demands and the 412 cab was born all those decades ago. i want my sound to come from the heart but with SCIENCE!

  • Me and him have the same guitar strap!! *squeal*

  • @BenjaminLOfficial well you asked what they use, thought id help

  • @BenjaminLOfficial he's uses axefx, its a digital amp thats absolutely amazing sounding. They don't even use cabs, just plug straight into the pa system. Look it up, pretty cool.

  • what pickups (bridge and neck) is he using in this Rico Jr?

  • @EntityAudio I believe he's using Bare Knuckle Aftermaths but I could be mistaken.

  • I would like to apply to be guitarworld's camera guy. Gets to watch great guitarists all day. I'm sure there's actual work to be done also.

  • 2:23 Acid Rain intro - Liquid tension experiment <3

  • @skalmortis true

  • what tuning is he in?

  • @smashingpoop drop D, then downtune all strings a further two frets, so low to high it's CGCFAD

  • Bulb is probably the guitarist that brought the most frustration:

First by wanting to get his tone, which is impossible (tweaked for years on my pod, don't know how he's doin' it. Despite I got his patch)

Second by trying to learn his songs, which is freakin hard. There's just so much goin on. The hardest is finding the intervals he lays down in his chords. When you try to do it, there's always one note that you won't get and that sounds "in between" two notes, like quarter tones... Crazy shit !

  • Misha's a boss!

  • I wish I was that clean :|

  • @CyValkarion than take a shower hahahahahahahahaha

  • Such a sick djenre of music

    ;)

  • theory is great, so is non theory.

  • it just depends on what your playing, and how your mind works. if your playing over hectic jazz changes, theory is nearly an absolute must. however, if your just writing music and have a good ear and are creative skys the fucking limit. I did a music degree and use theory like a mother fucker, cause most my solos are improvised, and most the music my band plays is diatonic, so its handy to just be able to solo at any point on any riff and know every scale position and note that will works.

  • Theory is not necessary but it does help. Tosin abasi went to school and he's a phenomenal guitarist but if it wasn't for misha a lot of the song on the animals as leaders album would've sounded different. And again, misha has little knowledge of theory. You can learn all the theory available but if you lack creativity you won't go far as far as writing goes.

  • I like this guy..He doesn't know a shit about theory and plays some crazy stuff...

  • I really hope he doesn´t use reverb when he´s playing with Periphery :p...

  • 1:00 ....That was half of a riff? :head explosion:

  • Good exercise!

  • LOL @ 2:41!

  • You know he's good when he tries to make something sound bad, but makes it still sound good.

    2:37

  • @Levi790

I just started laughing my ass off at that part.

He's like, "Yeah, I'm not just throwing random junk in there." *Insert kickass fill here*

  • @Cycon0 Obviously you have no idea what math metal or Technical death metal is These are genres of metal that rely on scales and arpeggios

then you got steve vai joe satriani and malmsteen who made their living mostly on relying on technique, scakes and arpeggios. then same thing with Jimmy page albert king bb king might wanna think that over people who say that people who rely on scales arent creative are people who dont know how to play guitar and thats my opinion.

  • ^_^ \\m//

  • JE TE PETE LA GUEULE PORTOS

  • I wasn't talking to you fool. But maybe I should have been. Learn how to read and evaluate what's written before you critisize.

  • Sounds like a dog dragging his ass on a fretboard.

  • Ok... I LOVE Periphery, but I'm kinda tired of all these guitar players going against pull-offs now, JUST BECAUSE Allan Holdsworth doesn't like them. That thing that Misha says about pulling off and getting a "nasty" tone is just lack of practice making sure that the notes come out nicely. Same thing goes with the "bending while pulling off." Lack of practice. A lot of players try to pull off while stretching and they end up unnecessarily bending the string. Pull offs sounds great. JUST PRACTICE

  • @panamanian911 Im not saying they are bad, i was just saying its a general rule i have for myself and for my style specifically, honestly there are no rules when it comes to music, so you should do whatever sounds good to you haha!

  • @Periphery Yeah, I understand.

  • hes still and idiot~ and im still better then him~

  • Pfft, reason he cant alt pick is because of the way he holds the pick.

  • @Blagaquondo probably

  • does anyone else love how big his cutaways are :D

  • Did anyone else hear the subliminal messages?? "Like.. Like.. Like.." I think he is trying to brainwash everone to "Like" his video! Just sayin'! Nice guitar though!

  • @metalphuck666 He didn't say it that much.

  • @metalphuck666 Damn! You figured me out haha! So far it seems to be working well though!

  • Filthey Djent !

    my love ! <3

  • It's Rebecca black "it's Friday" on a guitar world instuctional

  • Hahaha look at the like to dislike ratio. That's fucking horrible.

  • That being said, Misha is an phenomenal musician and this is a cool lesson.

  • @Silverwolf90 lol...I bet you like dog food dont you?

  • In my opinion everyone should know theory and have chops. And everyone should know how to throw them out the window when needed. Sometimes things make no sense theoretically and they just sound cool. And sometimes things need to be sloppy or else it feels flat and stale.

They're both totally important tricks to have in your bag. And music will be easier to create if you have both. Regardless of whether you decide to use them or not.

  • I'm amazed at the amount of intollorent people raging and bitching about absoloutly nothing important on this vid. lots of tiny dicks whining about their own personal preferences is all i hear.

Thanks for the lesson Meesh, this is one of my favorites!

  • I needn't prove myself to anyone I'm not the one posting what's supposed to be an instructional video that deals more with how he creates his licks. When I post a video than we will discuss my talent. I'm not the one on display. Where I'm from in the good old us of a we s are entitled to speak our opinions and that's just what I'm doing. Thak you very much for your intrest I'm sure you might be able to scrounge up $0.99 someday to buy a song on iTunes. Hahahaha

  • @heavymetalmastr Prove what you have said otherwise I will have to believe you are a jealous 14 year old muppet talking utter bullshit. That will be all. :)

  • kinda gay considering he doesn't seem to have the slightest clue of what he's talking about

  • @mytagisWVU69lolz lol @ this faggot.

  • @brockerhoff you're stupid

  • misha number one!

  • Music theory, is just that. A theory. A thought on how things in music are explained, and or should be done. What if I have my own theory? Music is feeling, and emotion. There is no explaining that or forcing that.

To people who care about the theory involved, instead of bitching in a comment about a video that was shot already, keep listening and use your brain to provide the theory. Don't knock someone for not knowing it, some people just do what they do well regardless of "teachings".

  • @cycon0 Sigh. You have a right to be mad because of the stupid people who see music theory as an absolute necessity. Truth is, music theory doesn't tell you how things should be. It simply tells you what things are and how they are related to other things. It is a great tool to understanding sounds and how to better manipulate them to create your music.

  • @cycon0 I definitely agree with you but I would go to argue that the more you know or are taught expands what you can do with your feeling, no matter what. The more you understand scales, shapes, picking styles, tapping, theory, dynamic, sound etc. : the better you are equipped to portray your feelings.

  • @cycon0 Yes, but music theory explains why certain things sound harmonic and why others sound very dissonant, whether you like it or not. Gravity is a "theory" but there's no denying it really...I agree with your general notion that music theory shouldn't be followed mindlessly, but there's no harm done in knowing some.

  • @cycon0 I agree with everything you said, except i just thought i should point out that it's not theory as in "I think there may be aliens", it's a theory as in a scientific one. Such as the theory of evolution, it's not just something someone made up out of nowhere

  • @cycon0 hellz yea, look at Jim Root for example... The guy can't even really play the same thing twice, and people can say what they want about his skill or lack of it... But he's getting paid to do what he loves while other people work jobs that they hate and then hate on other people because of it.

  • @cycon0 As a great guitar player once said, "Learn Music Theory, then throw it all out the window!" The problem some people have is that they do not know how to break the rules, think outside the box, or think for themselves. Theory is good practice, but it won't help you write a good song. That falls on your creativity, my friend! Folks who rely on scales alone, are not that creative, in my opinion. Not that my opinion matters anyway.

  • @MrSlayergod88 Charile Parker said something exactly like that, but applying to learning every aspect of your instrument. And it's a true story, brah.

  • @itscoolbro2 I think that's who I heard it from originally, man!

  • @MrSlayergod88 You can't think outside the box if you don't know what the box is! You can't break the rules if you don't know them. And Misha almost always ends up playing the same chromatic scale.

  • @amjan The same chromatic scale? What other chromatic scale are you playing?

  • @ShredST I'm playing the quarter-tone chromatic scale. :)

  • @MrSlayergod88 I agree with your statement to some point, but theory definately does help with song writing along with solo writing. Obviously it is not a necessity, though.

  • @MrSlayergod88 while i agree with you, theory can be a huge help for people that can get trapped in boxes. and if you know how to use modes, scales, etc and ETC you can really make amazing music AND know how you're doing it. Even if you don't know how you're making a sound when you write it, theory helps you figure it out, which in turn will make working with other musicians and producers a hell of a lot easier.

so i agree with you, but at the same time i don't :P

  • @MrSlayergod88 id have to disagree i understand what youre saying completely dont get me wrong if you just stick to boring repeticious writing styles then thats self determined writing according to theory to me again just me, simply makes it easier for you to put the ideas you hear in your head on the guitar thats it, I use theory solely to give me ideas on where to go with a riff or what to try that will give it the sound i want. I use theory only to guide creativity essentially

  • @MrSlayergod88 thats fuc*kin true man!

  • @bqpetrucci i agree with 100%

  • @MrSlayergod88 The most important thing about music theory is not for writing, but understand what you're writing so you can repeat the same idea again. It's best for analysis. But theory helps you when you don't "feel" the next note or resolution: you have the rules to rely on and move from there.

  • @MrSlayergod88 You have a good point besides saying that theory won't help you write a good song

  • @MrSlayergod88 But sometimes knowing theory can help spark the creative juices. I know with my writing, I like to know what is going on. It doesn't hinder my creativity at all. If it wasn't for theory, I don't think any of the music I have written would exist.

  • @MrSlayergod88 But knowing which notes and which frets link together to make a melody help you write creatively because giving yourself limitations forces you, (at least it forces me) to be as creative as possible within those guidelines. If i'm still not happy with what i wrote, i split the chords i'm using to get a broader range of scales and notes i can use.

This goes the other way too, knowing what i'm playing i know where i can go to sound good. IE more time to explore the things that work

  • @MrSlayergod88 Your opinion is great, buddy.

  • @GameKid98 I guess. Haha! It doesn't really matter. I'm just sayin you should learn basic theory, but not rely on it too much.

  • @MrSlayergod88 Learn what you'll use.

  • @MrSlayergod88 do you not know what accidentals are? boxes are for people who don't know theory.

  • @MrSlayergod88 I've heard this before ! the breaking the rules and stuff part.. was that Guthrie?

  • @MrSlayergod88 Very true, Ive left the guitar for a while to focus on my creativity that's in my opinion the best advice someone can give , to learn to have fun with it , to not be afraid of making mistakes or wanting to make everything perfect... overall working on your individuality and self esteem will lead you to better decision making which will not only help you on guitar but in life, Think on your own otherwise u will destroy your creative imagination, have fun inventing.

  • @MrSlayergod88 "You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail." - Charlie Parker

  • @MrSlayergod88 Page Hamilton?

  • @MrSlayergod88 i wouldn't throw it out the window, scales are very good warm ups, chords are the basic structure of music in of itself, but hey if you know your fretboard by heart and have perfect/relative pitch, assuming you get the best out of your theory, then yeah i guess that would be a good idea..

  • @MrSlayergod88

Thank You ! You Got It Right ! You have found your creativity & it is Not Found In A Book. I've been stressing that same point ! Self Taught Is Self Expression. The whole Idea is finding your style of playing. It's taking what you learn in a Whole New Direction. I say "Dare To Be Different"? You Got It Friend. That's why I joined YouTube.

To express "The EAR Is A Terrible Thing To Waste". Props To Ya My Man !

Let Misha be Misha, & You be You. PEACE..............!

  • @MrSlayergod88 I agree, but a bit of Theory does help. Learning theory won't make you any less creative unless you play nothing but scales.

Don't shun theory, but don't dedicate to using it either.

  • @DJMC141 music is a language. you can say infinitely more meaningful things if you know the language, just like with english. the more theory one knows, the more musical ideas and expressions [!] one can participate in. the people who are strictly anti-theory are holding others back from learning how to communicate in a more meaningful and DELIBERATE way. how someone can think that will stifle creativity is beyond me.

  • @MrSlayergod88 Opinion matters to me! haha I'm trying to learn guitar myself, but can't afford lessons. Anything you can recommend for me or websites that help? Thanks a lot.

  • awful noise gate on his voice..

  • @skezness Yeah GW really fails at that, haha.

  • @skezness i dont get it haha whats noise gate lol

  • i also suck at picking, and i also do hammer-ons as my shortcut! i suddenly feel better now

  • @skezness as usual :P

  • haha when he said random notes it almost sounded like tony danza tapdance extravaganza

  • no it sounds like noise. doesn't sound that cool.

  • I fuckin love that guitar.

  • love seeing a bunch of youtubers who couldnt write/play half of what misha can, yet still talk shit

  • this guy is fckin awesome (guitarwise and chiilwise), i wanna meet him

  • he's a normal dude. why is that so fuckin hard for some people to get? at least he's doing what he wants and is getting something out of it.

  • LOVE PERIPHEY!!!!!

  • more Misha !

  • That noise gate is set on 'kill'.....

  • I have a similar problem with alternate picking-how do i fix it?

  • @pajathetrut practice

  • What guitar does he use? It looks sweet.

  • @RandomGuitarist96 A Bernie Rico Jr.

  • I think the music is very fluent and has some great ideas, but the singer... Ughhh. I can't stand that kind of scream. Too much "-core" for me.

  • Who's that guy?

  • To all who watch this. If you are interested in an actual lesson skip this it's useless. And to the diuchebag who said listen to their older stuff I heard freak the gods and it sounds like a band of uneducated deaf mongoloids beating on a perfectly out of tune peice of wood strung up with animal intestines.

  • @heavymetalmastr coolstorybro

  • @heavymetalmastr LOL ...This is coming from a guy who has Michael Angelo Batio and "The worlds biggest flying V" As his two favourite videos. 2 Unmusical Gimmicky as fuck videos. You believe you are "just a successful" as Misha/Periphery? Nice bro, where abouts are you touring at the moment? where is your Guitar World column and Bands Cd at my local store? I'd love to check them out. And this isn't a general guitar lesson, its showing how Misha plays the Periphery song "Buttersnips". Fool.

  • @username102030405 ok dumbass. im touring the east coast right now were in maryland tonight delaware tommorow and my music can be purchased on itunes. ive been a professional touring musician for almost twenty years ive released over 200 songs on i tunes. your dumber than you sound if you think im gonna ruin a good thing by having a war of words with you. this is my sixteen year old sons acct i was watching videos on his ipad. so before you go judging some one maybe you find out who they are

  • @heaveymetalmaster A) I've never heard of you . B) You have a 16 year old son, this makes you around 40ish. You are 40years of age and arguing over youtube. You lead a sad old life. C) You think have 200 songs on itunes makes you successful? I could upload 200sound clips of me farting and taking a shit onto itunes and sell it. Am I successful? D) You need to learn proper use of grammar and punctuation. You're not your in most cases. E) Your opening sentence is an insult. you can't form a retort.

  • @davidkirbymusician youve never heard of me bececause i havent told you who i am.i couldnt give a fuck what you think of me. it was meant as an insult.and yes that makes me a sucsessful musician.

  • @username102030405 and also i see who your favorites are. suck his dick.or are you in this shitty band. this is fucking unorganized trash. and hey man nivana and the whole punk rock scene including green day are semi successful too. does that mean that they are great players.you suck and he sucks too

  • @heaveymetalmaster Rightio Mr Successful, what band are you in? what's your name and where is your proof? Where are these "200" songs? If you and your band are just as successful and better than this "unorganised trash" I'd love to check you guys out, you sound amazing! :)

  • @username102030405 look up bands like forfallen or homegrown or third day :)

  • @metachozoite Couldn't find forfallen anywhere...homegrown were an average pop punk outfit and third day was what..preacher pop? lol

  • @username102030405 it is music that brings glory to gdo thank you verry much...which is the only and real reason to play insurtments anyway. There better then most rock bands live...and they put on one hell of a show~
