  • justin, thank you for these lessons. this series is definitely one of the most well-thought out and well taught blues guitar intros on youtube. and no, you're not talking too much. i know a lot of people are eager to learn and just want to see where to put their fingers, but they need to realize that it isn't just about where you put your fingers and what strings you play. it's about why-it's technique. and your technique is fantastic. clear, simple and rockin'! thanks again, man. peace.

  • i love you

  • @bogellenong back off he's mine

  • I'm always looking for notes outside the minor pentatonic scales to sort of think outside of that box. I liked the extra blues notes and the extra notes in Dorian mode. Great stuff...thanks

  • good that guy

  • @realjuvelive do you enjoy having people piss you off? Just wondering, because you are just asking for it when you post senseless comments such as 'blues sucks!'

  • best guitar lessons ever

  • very nice video, great with a free lesson

  • Excuse me guys I personally don't play scales .. so what is the purpose of scales though ?

  • @realjuvelive So you can learn how to put the guitar to the most potential by learning new things you can do with it, while getting better at playing yourself.

  • @realjuvelive to improvise or make your own solo within a scale

  • @DaNorthernLight thats a big buff pinkie if it does

  • Omgsh. You are the answer to my prayers of curing my horrible guitar lead playing. I'm so in! God bless ya!

  • man, I've learned so much in 1 lesson, thanks Justin.

  • thumbs up

  • Why isit alwaysthe key of A?

  • @BoundInChains I guess Key of A is easier to show all possible positions than others on the neck (in standart tuning)

And also, bending in Key of A in 1st position is easier as it is approximately middle of the neck.

  • @ertansaygi That's a very reasonble explanation. I thought blues was all about the key of A. ;) Thanks!

  • Jason you Rcok man! your the best teacher on youtube! after learning thease 3 scales you had me jamming on me electric and sonuding much better.. i am a really a accoustic guitar player, so thease scales really helped me get used to my new electric guitar.

  • @windsurf7772 You know it's Justin Sandercoe right? Not Jason?

  • @AllinforMichigan78 oh is too sorry, justin rocks on

  • Thank you! I just need to practice practice practice! Thank you :)

  • @danmartynharris

    You are too.

  • is all 3 scale played in the key of A?

  • didnt know michael jacksons Bad is based off of a scale!

  • I GOT THE SAME TELECASTER :| A reissue right? Awesome!

  • I was always getting mad because i could never do like a lead or little lick or something on my own. Thanks to your video(s) i can now play guitar and enjoy it way way much! Thanks so much and keep it up Justin!

  • your talent shouldn't be on youtube. it should be in the shops at a CD

  • Great video ... You mention at around 3:17ish you mention that you should bend with your third finger (not your pinky) ... why is that, I bend with my pinky and don't seem to have a problem ... I do of course use my other fingers to support my pinky for the bend.

  • @jlhcornwall He also said it's your choice. If you can easily bend with the pinky, you should continue doing so!

  • @jlhcornwall i use my pinky to bend too, but since watching this vid i have started to use my third finger. it just gives you more control and makes the bend sound stronger, more supported. i still use my pinky from time to time, but i've been changing it up. ultimately, it's about what works for you.

  • @sgenn99 me too. use my pinky coz i was classical guitar player first. but its cool to learn electric differences so thanx many many times for yur great vids

  • i love blues <3

  • fantastic mate. all the way from australia

    great lesson btw :)

  • Thos are fake nails :D

  • Even if you suck at guitar, playing the 3 in variations make it seem like you know what you're doing. Awesome vid!

  • The dorian mode seems an awful lot like G major pos 2.

  • i need a tab 4 the dorian notes and where 2 play em. try addin a tab box 2 ur vids justin.. u rock man

  • youre the man

  • gr8 lesson man thx

  • your lessons are the best but what in the name of Saint Hendrix is that rat at the end of the video. lol

  • its a wolverine lmfao. so random

  • Pretty sure it's an Tasmanian Devil. Native to the country that Justin is from.

  • he's aussie?

  • english

  • These lessons are great, been playing about a year, Justin is an excellent teacher, if you want to slow the video down there is a software programme callede transcribe but you should not need to.

  • does this work for all keys or only A?

  • It works for any key

  • sounds great when u do it on the high notes

  • justin..is your fingering for the blues scale in this vid different from the chart you showed on your website. or is it just me?

  • Good video. I haven't learned the Dorian mode scale yet but it kind of looks like the first position of the minor pentatonic scale (in A) overlapping the second position of the major pentatonic scale (in A). Is there a reason for this or is it just a coincidence?

  • i am trying to learn the blues scale for a bit of chuck berry style geetar-in' and this is the single most helpful video in you tube. thank you so much.

  • Finally a high quality vid that shows the scales plus gives a good example of how to put them to use. Nice job.

  • Good stuff. The combination of scales, modes and figures are really the key to getting "that sound". Good stuff man.

  • ur awsome...but can u take it a bit slower mate..... thanks a lot.. ur a great teacher

  • thanks! ! ! ! this helps me alot

  • Thank you so much *.*

  • Is that a Nashville Tele?

    LOL

  • I've progressed from a 'crap guitar player' into a 'more knowledgeable crap guitar player'. I'm off to pratice to become a 'more knowledgeable not quite so crap guitar player' 8-)

    Thanks Justin!!

  • @YaniT991 wooow.....woooow....wow !!

  • @YaniT991 same here haha

  • This is a great lesson, and helped me out alot. Thanks alot!

  • Freakin great! :)

    Love those "Blue notes" =)

  • what the FUCK is with that tazmanian devil?!?! that freaked me out man! great lesson though, cheers!

  • haha, its his signature.. he does it at the end of each vid

  • @Jurbo33 ... LOLOL! I feel you! That Devil Dog scared hell out of me too! I actually backed away from the monitor to keep from getting my nose ripped off! hahaha!

  • @Jurbo33 i was chased by one of those fuckers. they're very very scary!

  • @Jurbo33 where is it?

  • good lesson, the A dorian scale is the G major with the root note A i.e A B C D E F# G.you can also use the minor Pentatonic and the blues up a semi tone A# but don't stay there to long! use it as passing notes

  • Damn this is useful! Thanks man!

How much do you charge per hour for personal lessons?

  • yeah man thats awesome I couldn't play guitar to save my life.... now I rock (in my opinion) you're a great teacher too :0)

  • How is that?

  • Because hes explaining it you fucking twat,it is a lesson ....

  • There is 2 extra notes on the blues scale that aren't on the minor pentatonic, but otherwise, flawless video.

  • sorry if i sound rude here haha, but its actually only one note, its adding a D# on the two different strings. when you play 5th string 6th fret its a D#, as well as when you play 3rd string 8th fret, which is a D#.

You think by notes he means frettings. but in reality, its the same note.

  • You sir are a fool (elclapton44545). There is only one added note in the Blues scale. You are obviously thinking in terms of playing the scale all the way down. In which case you play the scale twice (and thus the extra note twice).

  • Justin, you are a very good guitar instructor. Thanks for your great work here. I know you love guitar because it really shows. Once again, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Flagranger

  • on a blues turnaround is it possible to use other scales - like for example harmonic minor or melodic minor or diminished scale?

    thnx

  • What i don't get is how does all of this apply to the other 4 positions of the pentatonic?...Where are the blue notes in the other positions...or are there any?...Anyway, thank you very much for the lessons, Justin....I paid for 2 hours of lessons (4) and didn't even bother going to the last two lessons...The guy didn't come close to teaching me what I can learn here from you and others like Marty...Please keep em comin, bro!

  • The "Blue" notes are normally the flat third and third notes along with a few others within and around the chord that is being played in the progession. For instance, while in the key of "A", the blue note that is most used will be the "C" and "C#", The actual "C" note is within the minor blues scale while the "C#" is actually in the Major scale but the koolest one is the "C almost but not quite #" note that is between the "C" and "C#" notes. Underatand??

  • Great lesson! Thanks a bunch.

  • well i want to master in rock leads.... is that .first we hav to leaarn blue than go to rock..but i dont like bluse at alll. all i like it rock n metal....can u gimme any vedios to practice or to learn some leads in rock

  • you can also think of the dorian mode as combining box 1 and 4 of the minor pentatonic (well that's what i see in it)

  • *box 1 and 5

  • the idea is this... learn a scale, learn HOW TO USE A SCALE then with some practice it becomes instinctive and you don't think about them. I never think about scales when I play, why would anyone want to - but for a beginner it makes a lot of sense to learn scales and experiment with them until they become natural to use.

  • I agree but the most important aspect of playing guitar is not scales. It`s chords because as the other guy has stated, chords are essential and chords actually contain the scales within them. No arguement here about your idea, just approach. Show the chords that are in use and the scales within them and then the overall scale, position and mode. To begin learning guitar by learning scales is a disaster waiting to happen with only heartbreak on the horizon. CHORDS chords chords chords chords!

  • What ^ he said.

  • I agree darin. To many guitar players are trying to begin learning guitar by learning scales. You can always notice these players. They sit over there, playing half cocked lead and don`t know nor could they tell you the chord progression. Sorry Justin but I`ll have to agree with Darin on this one. Chords Chords Chords

  • Jimi Hendrix once said "learn the chords and the rest will follow"

  • I responded with a video. I recorded this on the fly and all of the lead just happened at the moment. My friend was messing with me the entire time but it turned out ok. Scales never crossed my mind. The sounds of music play out in my head and end up at the tips of my fingers. Like I said, turned the camera on, recorded the lead to an old rythym track on my looping station then turned it off. I was actually trying to showcase the Looping Station.

  • Exactly what I was thinking 777. Scales are important just as chords are absolutely essential. Actually chords are more important because they contain the scales within them but application calls for the ear and heart. I`m also educated in music so I completely understand the point portrayed here but you can`t be thinking about this scale and that scale as you`re playing music. Scales and chords are learned ,... music occurs. Loved that comment 777.

  • Too much talk about scales. Theres no way to try to think of these scales as you play blues if you`re playing as you should which is from the heart. Scales should be learned as an individual part of your music education. Applying the scales should come as 2nd nature. Do not try to think about all of this mumbo jumbo while actually playing guys. No disrespect intended. I play by ear, read tab and notation but playing blues or any other music comes from the heart. Don`t think, just play.

  • yes I agree you should play, as you say from the heart.but it does help to have a scale or two under your belt.just let it happen thanks and respect

  • I have a few videos concerning Blues, Funk and general chord usage if you guys want to check them out.

  • to what aeolian scale does the A-dorian scale invert? I need to know to apply to dorian scale in a more save way - thx for the answers^^

  • awesome

    nice guitar btw

  • nice vid bro

  • thx for the tips

    also, very awesome ending

  • it took patience from me to listen all that blues and pentatonikscalethings i know and use since years, but I never heard about dorian...

Now i start subscribing it to all parts of the fret and tonight i will be much better than the last 10 years...

    !!! THANK YOU MAN !!!

  • exelent bro

  • Awesome Justin Thanks for the Excellent video!!! Miami Beach USA

  • hey, thanks helpful i have a bit better understanding of mode cool licks + riffs etc

nice fret inlays + guitar by the way :)

  • In the blues scale and the dorian, if I alt-pick on a string with 3 notes, my last pick is a down pick. Should I start the next note on the next string with an up pick, continueing the alt-picking, or should I start it with a down pick, because that is what I would do in the 'normal' scale?

  • You should keep alt-picking to keep the rhythm.

  • i love the bluesriff you do its very cool

your an excellent player and teacher

keep up the good work :)

  • Justin You are amazing. excelent personne. cheers sir

  • all sounds great, very good lesson on the scales

  • but how to you do things like that in 3:07 ?

  • Arent you actually starting in the 2nd position in the minor pent scales there???? Also, is this dorian mode you are playing the same as a diatonic scale??? Confusing from what I've learned is all!!

Shouldnt I learn all 5 pent minor scales?
