The statue is to commemorate the founding of the Black Watch at Aberfeldy, the first soldiers were recruited in about 1735 or so. They were raised by the British Government to to help control the Highland Clans. My understanding is they were called black watch as their tartan was dark and 'Watch' as they were watching the Highlands of Scotland for the government.

Black Watch and their heroic battles in the Fort Ticonderoga, Quatre-Bras, Alma, Tel-El-Kebir are all legendary and I respect that. They are no longer a full regiment but a mere battalion now, but still, their legacies will live on further on.

However, I am appalled by the blatant display of racism and prejudice down in the comment section. Do you lots know that Britain is gaining a bad name for many citizens being a racist? I thought the legacy of the BE was tolerance and understandings?
