yo dawg, i herd you like photos, so i put some photos in your photos in your photos so you can look at photos in your photos in your photos while you listen to iron & wine! -Xzibit
I think imagery is sometimes just so personal that it's hard to see the exact meaning the writer tried to translate to us. It's quite a poetic song... I can see many meanings in it, but thats just my mind interpreting the words. But I sense alot of it has to do with the feeling of someting eternal. Alot of reference to allcompassing stuff, not letting go (etc.)
@mstewey I feel the same way. Too bad he's married with 5 daughters. I think I'd be happy just to spnd a day with this man... or at least grab a drink.
This is a great song...but i think upward over the mountain is my favorite...reminds me of my mom...and that doesn't change the fact that i think the trapeze swinger is the best song ever written
His song have some sort of air of innocence, hard to explain. But you need talent to do that as a grown man. Love his songs, impossible to get enough of them.
this is basically the trapeze swinger with a diff "tone"... its needed; but my mind can't help and put me back in the state of mind that the former song used to
The reason it has a feel of the trapeze swinger is because of the nostalgia that you feel...both songs call for reflection...and that is why i think you perceive that..but also...alot of his songs have that feeling..at least for me..so i don't know..but that is my take on it
i agree that they take n a similar mood and that most of his music seems to follow that; but what i meant was that the two songs also lay upon the same modes. Listen to one and then the other, the accompaniment is practically the same. So my comment was in the regard to the fact that that similarity may possibly be shutting out much of a chance for me to find and take something different from this piece than frm the other, when my assumption is that he meant to recreate the other and add to it
Such a gorgeous tune and lyrics that drip with imagery. I find it really interesting how Sam turned his music from a solo thing into larger arrangements without losing any intimacy.
I love this song. I thin that I've listened to it at least fifty times today. I think these lyrics just refer to things he's experienced in real life with a poetic type spin to them.
I am trying to understand this song, truly beautiful, just as I start believing that I figure out the meaning, what does are tender bellies are wound around in baling wire mean.
Songwriters are often some of the most obtuse characters on earth, but this may be one of the seemingly more straightforward things I've heard in lyrics. This is almost one of those, "gotta-be- Southern-to-get-it "" lines, if he isn't using it reference to something other than what it seems..
Sounds like a way of saying they are both upset, vulnerable sections of flesh, wound in bailing wire..bailing wire is used for bailing hay. So, it seems to refer to feeling upset to me, but who knows?!?!
I love Sam Beam so much and Iron and Wine, that Im growing my beard and my hair out. LOL. I think he has one of the most wicked of styles and his music is....perfect! Absolutely Perfect
You know, this song has such "country" music sounding structure, and while that is something I usually just cannot stomach, I adore this. I absolutely love Sam's writing, what a poet of the first order. When someone can take my associations to a particular sound and morph them into the complete reverse of aversion, that's beyond impressive to me. I think he could probably clang on pots and pans and I'd still love him, with that honey voice and those intoxicating words.
What a beautiful song; stumbled upon it on someone's myspace site. Never heard of the group but I love being pleasantly surprised now and then with a little blessing...
i've always pinned it to a man looking back on his childhood, or thinking of when he was a boy looking ahead. and wondering if it turned out the way he wanted it to.
thats very close to how i think of it, it seems to me like a man about to die and looking back at his childhood, however many of my interpretations deal with this and much of my art does too so it might just be an unconciously ego-centric way of perceiving it.
i love all the bull crap art projects that accompany great songs now!
