I spent many hour's trying to figure out what the meaning of this song was, and to this day, i still can't seem to figure it out.

I think imagery is sometimes just so personal that it's hard to see the exact meaning the writer tried to translate to us. It's quite a poetic song... I can see many meanings in it, but thats just my mind interpreting the words. But I sense alot of it has to do with the feeling of someting eternal. Alot of reference to allcompassing stuff, not letting go (etc.)

The reason it has a feel of the trapeze swinger is because of the nostalgia that you feel...both songs call for reflection...and that is why i think you perceive that..but also...alot of his songs have that feeling..at least for me..so i don't know..but that is my take on it

i agree that they take n a similar mood and that most of his music seems to follow that; but what i meant was that the two songs also lay upon the same modes. Listen to one and then the other, the accompaniment is practically the same. So my comment was in the regard to the fact that that similarity may possibly be shutting out much of a chance for me to find and take something different from this piece than frm the other, when my assumption is that he meant to recreate the other and add to it

Songwriters are often some of the most obtuse characters on earth, but this may be one of the seemingly more straightforward things I've heard in lyrics. This is almost one of those, "gotta-be- Southern-to-get-it "" lines, if he isn't using it reference to something other than what it seems..

Sounds like a way of saying they are both upset, vulnerable sections of flesh, wound in bailing wire..bailing wire is used for bailing hay. So, it seems to refer to feeling upset to me, but who knows?!?!

You know, this song has such "country" music sounding structure, and while that is something I usually just cannot stomach, I adore this. I absolutely love Sam's writing, what a poet of the first order. When someone can take my associations to a particular sound and morph them into the complete reverse of aversion, that's beyond impressive to me. I think he could probably clang on pots and pans and I'd still love him, with that honey voice and those intoxicating words.
