  • @ sharuba, I was picking this song for Whitney (rip) funeral,, and with the trouble confusion in the world, your words are strong. "As we prepare to pass in the decades to come, let us pass this light to our children" let us not grow up in ignorance. especially to the determination of an Empire, disguised as a Democracit Republic for the people. who, by the way don't believe in killing each other! I mean, isn't that what we Preach? wake up, hold hands, don't let them break the line"

  • I am speechless with tears running as I recall how a brave generation burned our draft cards "singing this light of mine "on the steps of the Pentagon, Oct 23 1967. as the sun went down, thousands of little lights shone to mark the refusal of the children of America to kill their brothers and sisters in VietNam with high tech weaponery, on a humbug so that the war mongers could make money. As we prepare to pass in the decades to come, let us pass this light to our children.

  • The spoken intro brought tears to my eyes. I have heard the quote so much, but hearing it through the mouth of someone who truly embodies those words is something powerful and moving.

  • dude i remember this when i was kid. too bad i didnt understand crap about religion when i was a kid.

  • You are Still my Light!!!!

  • "You are a child of God". Indeed, through Jesus alone. The trouble is that too many people out there like to omit that part, and search for light - or anything like it - in themselves only, where none is to be found. If there is ever a time to reflect upon the Light of This world, Christmas is it. And when you do, you may come to realize the value of that Light in a world shrouded in a darkness, so deep and permanent that we kind of got used to it. There is more to this world than meets the eye.

  • Should be on every school-curriculum... would make a great difference to some, who have low self-esteem...and there are many!

  • my daughter used to sing this song in preschool ~ I love it so much!

  • no it was not marianne williamson that first spoke these words but Mandella

  • @sadiesadie no, it was Marianne Williamson. Mandela never said it, that's an urban myth you can Google it if you like.

  • Some People Sing to sound good, to people who dont know Music and Make Lots of Money. But There are a few other People, who Sing to be Real and reach People who Feel.God.

  • @GodSpellsMusic i feel ya. Doesn't matter about sounding good or being on beat or on pitch. God tells us to,"Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted." Shout to God, shout the words from your soul. Give thanks for what He has done. Don't hold back because you aren't on tune or in rhythm. Don't give up your right and need to shout from the soul, let your voice be heard.

  • It is People like YOU! THAT Makes My Light Shine>

  • @GodSpellsMusic Thank you, you've made a very salient point. Those who shine teach us of the sun light of God (no pun intended). There are few like Odetta but multitudes like me and thank God for the Odettas of this world.

  • this is how this song is meant to be sung

  • This is such a beautiful song I cry every time I hear it, what a lovely lady.

  • thank you beautiful odetta. youre royalty in my book

  • Very inspiring! How many of us really do acknowledge this light within us and "let IT shine" in our lives! Many thanks for this.

  • so i never really understood the meaning of this song until i heard that opening speech
