"I hate mainstream music, underground music is real music"
Well aren't you a cool hipster. Listen to whatever you want and don't let people affect your taste in music. Listening to a certain song doesn't make you a loser or cool. Listen to it for whatever reason you do, whether it be how catchy it sounds or the meaning of the song, or maybe just because you fucking want to. When people say shit like "that sucks", it's their opinion, and you don't want their opinion to affect yours. Your unique.
OMG THAT GUY IS SOOO ME,, except for the part with the iranian folk whatever that is. but DUDE, i am such a music snob and i never realized how annoying it might be.. thank you greg.
i'll keep my german techno and other foreign music to myself when i can retain my self control lol
I love the Finnish doom metal band 'Sentenced'. The band broke up in 2006 when their bass guitarist drank himself to death. This is the music to which I meditate after a fight with my father. Also good music for shooting yourself.
if ur gonna listen to hip hop, listen to something good like mc eyedea, living legends, dj shadow. im not against mainstream music just mainstream rap. the last thing i wanna listen to is someone rhyming about hoes and 22" rims
kurt cobain killed himself because his music went mainstream...mainstream sucks even man in the box agrees with all the nickelback bashing and thats all the radio plays 2day
I hate people who hate on mainstream bc mainstream today sucks but 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago it was awesome bands like Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles.
@Gregwuzhere : Bullcrap todays mainstream does not suck, it is great too. Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Radiohead, (too some extend) coldplay, foofighters, kings of leon, audioslave I could go at this for hours. Fuck a lot of rap and hiphop isn't really that bad if you open yourself up to it.
@Gregwuzhere What? You mean you hate people that hate on mainstream and then think its the best a decade or two later. Like those who hated Pearl Jam in the 90's but like it now? Or you just hate those people who hate today's music and like older music better. B/c those are two different things... B/c the past decade's music did suck relative to other past decades. A few high points, but mostly shit.
just cause your a proffesional doesnt mean you know shit son. For example. Have you ever heard of soulja boy? he is a professional. and he doesnt know shit. now jim. ive never heard your music, probably never will. why cause you suck goat balls son.
This is funny because it makes fun of alot of people on youtube who act like Devon there, they act like if you listen to popular or mainstream music then you're a poser or something, it's mainstream for a reason....because it's good music
i used to listen to metal and rock exclusively, i confess i was an uppity prick a few years ago, then i just opened my mind to it all cos i got fed up of listening to the same stuff and now i love alot of "euro techno" as you call it, its all a matter of perception i reckon :P
I am Devon, the White Stripes are ok though. My coworkers hate me for my holier than thou attitutude about music but I can't help it. Music is extremely important to me and everyone around me listens to shit!
Actually, good music isn't all opinion. As a musician I know from a few years of music theory that certain music, whether you like it or not, is still good. You should appreciate music without understanding it. The sort of music I listen to is divine, and when someone says it isn't "good music", I tell them that they need to learn more about music before displaying such ignorance. Arnold Schoenberg is a great example, his music isn't aesthetically appealing, however it is technically masterful.
sorry, but i think whoever taught you that "certain music, whether you like it or not, is still good." was probably quite stuck up, though i dont know him/her so cant really judge, anyway i got to disagree too that complex or carefully made = good, if it pleases you to listen to then its good, for you. i bet if mozart had wrote "hit me baby one more time" and played it in his style, and britney spears never sung it you would say it was a masterpiece :P
Quite the display of ignorance. "Good" music, is good music, regardless of the listener's opinion. It's not a specific person that taught me that, or any other musician for that matter. It's just common knowledge amongst professionally trained musicians. As a musician myself you can take my word. By the way, what you said about Mozart didn't make sense. If he had written that song in his style, it would be different. You'll probably want to respond with more nonsense, in which case don't bother.
well i was trying to tell you how snobby you sounded, i totally disagree on your idea of music quality but hey our opinions are what they are, personally i dont think anyones musical talent or knowledge elevates their opinion above anybody else's, nobody likes a snob though :P
Sorry if I sound snobby. By the way, this isn't "my idea" of music, or anyone's opinion. Ask any musician like I said, they are facts. My musical talent doesn't elevate my opinions. However, I am a seventeen year old professionally trained jazz pianist, and I've been making a living with my dad gigging for the past few years. A musician's musical knowledge doesn't elevate their opinion's either, however what we're debating isn't a matter of opinion, it's just what's written in stone.
hahahaha you DO sound so ignorant and snobbish. "professionally trained musician" hahahah, you can barely even call yourself professional, you could never contend with the likes of "Ludwig Van Beethoven", "Vladimir Horowitz", and "Yuja Wang". Go back to school, you ignorant prick, and pull that silver spoon out of your ass.
I am a professional, I get paid to play music, it's my job, it's how I pay the bills. I'm pretty sure that qualifies me as a professional. I've been trained by other professionals that make a living teaching people how to be, you guessed it, professional. It is my profession, and the one thing in my life that is constant. I've been playing jazz piano for money since I was fifteen years old, and I've been studying music my entire life. I'm pretty sure what I've been taught is the real deal.
Just because it is your job, or "profession", doesn't mean you are a professional at it. So, basically, you don't know the meaning of the word "professional", if you consider yourself to be one.
Okay at that point you're just arguing for the sake of argument, that doesn't even make sense. It is my job to play music for people, people pay me good money to play a piano for them. That makes me a professional, the definition of professional is one who is engaged in a profession. A profession is something one gets paid for. Thus making me a professional musician. This discussion is over. You're just arguing for sport at this point.
Technically she'd be a professional at playing piano naked, not a professional musician unless she'd been trained prior to said event. But yes, to answer your question, if you get paid to do anything, ANYTHING, then you're a professional at it, you don't need to be good at something to be a pro, you just need to get paid to do it, that's the definition of professional, which is what the argument is about really. It's not valid at this point.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
honestly dude from one musician to another will you please just go play the piano and have a heart attack or somthing cuz i cant stand assclown musicians who think they're the shit cuz cuz they make 'good money' nobody gives a shit. and 'by the way'
i know soo many people like that that bitch at me cuz i listen to main stream music.? even though i listen to tech death metal. its annoying they dont even know what i listen to but they complain just cuz there douchebags
Of course it wasn't; using actual White Stripes audio samples in a video that receives advertising revenue would be a huge violation of copyright law.
There's a lot of great music out there that never makes it on the radio. I don't see any problem with looking for iteresting new bands that appeal to you as an individual. Especially since mainstream music is usually generic, repetitive, predictable and boring. I'm with Devon. Funny shit though.
There's no problem with people looking for new bands, but this skit makes fun of the idiots who try too hard to be different when it comes to music. There's two extremes in terms of people's music tastes. Both suck! The first is those who know nothing of the music outside the top 40 charts. The other is those who try too hard to be cool by avoiding famous bands so they can attempt to show off their knowledge of indie artists. Ultimately, people shouldn't let the radio influence them either way.
First of all, radio has an influence over people whether they listen to it or not. Secondly, you can't assume that every time that someone likes something that you think is weird or different that they are "trying too hard to be different". It's possible that they actually like the music, even if you don't.
I think you may have missed the point of this comedy clip. The whole point of the clip is to make fun of the music snobs who go out of their way to avoid mainstream music. So ya, I realize that it's possible that some people actually like those other forms of music, but clearly Devon isn't one of them. He's one of the idiots who tries to hard to listen to and enjoy anything but mainstream music. That's the idea behind this video clip. To make fun of him and those like him.
When he was listening to the White Stripes, there was clearly some bass in there, but the White Stripes don't have a bassist, so, was it really the White Stripes?

Actually, good music isn't all opinion. As a musician I know from a few years of music theory that certain music, whether you like it or not, is still good. You should appreciate music without understanding it. The sort of music I listen to is divine, and when someone says it isn't "good music", I tell them that they need to learn more about music before displaying such ignorance. Arnold Schoenberg is a great example, his music isn't aesthetically appealing, however it is technically masterful.

Have you not... HEARD... Seven Nation Army?
They have basslines, I think Jack plays bass on some of the tracks
jackfordtrousers 3 years ago
No bass, just pedals to drop the range on the electric guitar and give it a bass effect.
CleverDan31 3 years ago
Yeah, I would like a pedal like that, but they're like $500.
AngryStopMotion 3 years ago
When he was listening to the White Stripes, there was clearly some bass in there, but the White Stripes don't have a bassist, so, was it really the White Stripes?
