@ilonawright1 How about laying down. Could you train the dog to crawl backwards between your legs? This could be done via luring. Then the dog backs up towards you, drops before he gets between your legs and continues moving backward by crawling. That would be a really cool NEW move! Or you could lift one leg and have the dog back under it, kind of like Honey the Great Dane does when the handler has her 'weave' forward through her legs.
Keep working on backing between your legs until it is easy for he. Try a half step back and do it quickly when she is still in position and she should move back with you. Don't give her time to think about turning back to you.
Awesome tutorial!!!! I have a question: When we get to the stage at 1:16, Nellie (my sheltie) turns her head and comes to me instead of backwards. What do we do?
@murwill1 An easy way is to lure the half turn with the dog in heel position and you take a step back. Then add the cue, then try it with the dog in front of you. Good luck!
gulp! i was going to use this behavior as an example of a CF behavior that really is great to back chain in pam and my seminar in Canada! hehe, ill have to find a different one to go with it!
@kikopup That's very thoughtful, but I will be happy with any of your creative ideas as I am sure there will be a new twist on something I never thought of! LOL! I love your approach and always get new ideas from you!
I'm in the process of teaching this, and I've hit a snag. He has the position rock solid. He has the turn rock solid, but his backing up is slow and unsure. How can I encourage a more confident back up? Should I continue to only move in very small steps, until he speeds up? Thanks.
@smoon3 Try more practice with him backing between your legs, then phase it out so he is more ahead of you. Make it a game to speed up as he gets better. I do alot of back end awareness 'games' to help with his. Good luck.
Thanks for this wonderfully clear tutorial! Ricky has the flip and back between my legs but I wasn't sure how to go about getting the straight and continued backwards btw legs part or the distance. Thanks for the terrific ideas!
If the dog is too big to stand comfortably between legs in step 1, can you offer alternative advice? I like this method very much. Thank you

Great tutorial. Mine know how to spin and back through my legs but I still need to add more distance to it yet.
Canislupess 1 year ago
@Canislupess Thanks! it is the distance that takes the time. Take it slow and you will succeed! Have fun!
