  • You can watch part 2 to this solo on the Vic Firth site. I wish someone would upload it to youtube because part 2 is one of the greatest fucking things I've ever seen.

  • 7 people have nooo taste for good music....and amazing drummers!!!!!!!!

  • steve is a mathematic.

  • EPIC HI HAT.

  • I like his feel a lot better than Weckl's.

  • 1:25 to 1:36 his left hand on the snare drum is fucking magical!!

  • Can I touch your face : O

  • thumbs up if you would freak out if you had drums and you didnt loosen anything and ur hi hat started doing that :)

  • He makes it look so easy.

  • stiiiiiick conntrrrrol

  • Does anyone have the link to the next part of this video? I believe it's one of his best solo's.

  • how did the hi hat do that at the start?

  • @DrummaAddict You loosen the felts on the hats a lot and then like, slam the hat with the stick and then immediately splash, really close like a flam. Then keep splashing at a moderately fast pace. It's easier to do with heavier hi-hats. I learned it from watching Keith Carlock. Look him up.

  • I dont know what is so flattering to me about watching people play traditional from this angle. It just looks so graceful, and Steve makes everything look so effortless. This is awesome!!

  • hah, his hi-hat in the beginning is great.

  • he's so freakin' amazing. This inspired me!!!

  • Journey must have been a really challenging gig for this guy to get, with their odd time signatures and mind boggling compositions.

  • @dwilmer7 Not to mention the big ass paychecks....

  • @golferal lol yup ur right dude.

  • master of the world...

  • csm porque es tan seco

  • ES UN DE MENTE Y MUCHA SABIDURIA

  • I can't believe I've never given this guy his props. Knowing he played in Journey, which no offense but I consider bubble gum rock, I figured he could only be so good. Since then whenever I heard how good he was, I just assumed he was overrated. Obviously I was sadly mistaken, cause this guy can flat out play. What a technician, and a very cool guy as well.

  • DAMN!! At the beginning.... LOOK AT THAT HI-HAT FLY!!!

  • fast, but not musical

  • at 1:33 what the fuck is he doing with his left hand on the snare!!

  • What the.. I think he might be balancing hte stick on his thumb?

  • Whatever it is. its crazy

    Its steve fucking smith XD

  • lol yer hes balancing it in his thumb/index finger groove and playn with his fingers. thats intense.

  • What..you never saw Buddy Rich do that?? 45 years ago?

  • I've always played match grip, but I'm pretty sure just emphasizing the push fingers (don't know the technical term). He's doing the same thing the whole time, just much faster. It's the same thing you'd do playing match grip. Use the index knuckle and thumb as the fulcrum, and use your fingers to push the stick down. Dennis Chambers talked about practicing using each finger to get them all strong. I think it helps with dynamics. I'm no expert, but I hope that helps.

  • Hes playing the snare on the down stroke and the hi hat on the up stroke......saaaweeeet!

  • @rith5... i think he is hitting the side of the snare for more rebound and that noise it makes when u hit it

  • @rith5 its not too dificult to do but its fucking hard to put into context like steve does here!

  • @rith5 Check out the hi-hat solo video from a Vic Firth clinic. He does some CRAZY stuff with his sticks in that one...

  • @golferal haha yea man ive checked those out n been thoroughly exhausted trying to copy him!

  • Really good drum solo. neil is my favorite, but steve definitely is top five for me.

  • This is real drumming.

I hate all that travis barker, neil peart shit.

  • travis barker is a shit... he isn't good at drums... is only scene!!!

  • Well Travis Barker is, but some one like Steve Smith and Dave Weckl, those are simply the masters along with John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Dennise Chambers....

  • lol travis barker is shit steve is very very good

  • We all gotta love that K Heavy Ride.

  • WOWW

  • Oh no you didnt ! How can you mention travis barker in the same sentence with Steve Smith. Im with MCshlthead, I hope you where kidding about whats his name..

  • i hope your joking about travis barker

  • travis barker sucks, all he is, is fast and not skilled

  • Steve Smith is one of the best players in the Universe.

  • THIS IS MORE LIKE IT

  • Needs more cowbell :D lol

  • I would to be like him, when I grow up!!!

  • wow....awesme control and awesome technique...this guy kicks major ass

  • does anyone know what hi hats those are?

  • Zildjian 14" A Armand Hi-Hats are what the jazzmaster is known for using, can't see right but look like those!

  • he has some of the most incredible technique ive ever seen.

  • unhuman

  • His technique is fucking amazing.

  • For those curious how Steve Smith sounds in a progressive metal situation, he recorded an album with Tony Macalpine called "Edge of Insanity." His work on that album is amazing.

  • he has restless hi hat syndrome

  • His control over the pedals are incredible!

  • go MR hi-hat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Damn, never realized how much he truly kicks ass on the drums until watching this.

  • are you retarded?

  • Impressive...

I always listen to metal, and I like drummers like Vinnie Paul or Dave lombardo, but damn Steve is good

  • YUCKY BUT AWESOME CHINA AT 1:37

  • 0:4 holy shit how the hell does he get his hi hat to move like that with his foot?!?

  • A few things...he has the tilt adjusted on the bottom hat, his hats are set loose and he's 'heeling' the pedal (nice and hard) in order to "splash" the hats. They'll just start going like that after a few stomps. Good luck with it. Have fun.

  • that's what I'm saying that's all I would like to know right now

  • Wow

  • To the guy that thinks Steve Gadd is abetter drummer than this. Well we know you aren't much of a drummer. I never thoght Steve would evolve to this level. I honestly didn't. I used to see him in Journey in 70's and thought he was a good rock drummer. But this is special. Don't see how his skinny forearms can propel so well. Oh well seeing is believing. Yahoo Steve

  • its about time he gets his signature kit

  • what the hell is wrong with that hihat?

  • wtf at 1:25.....so weird looking, and yeah the hi hats are bizarre too hahaha

  • its like a beatblast? lol

  • eh, more or less, haha, nonetheless its bizarre as hell looking

  • Did you hear that china? That is NASTY!!

  • what ride is it it's gorgeous!!

  • u can say: steve smith and sonor-the perfect pair....;) OK

  • how the F**k does he do that with his hi-hats

  • Is that hi-hat on a piece of string lol haha... CRAZY never seen some1 do tht b4

  • horrible sound...but that's NOT steve's fault...

  • crazy hi-hats much?!

  • ummm...00:05 to 00:13 that is againts the laws of physics.

Steve eats us mere mortal drummers for B L and D!

  • yeah wtf is with that hi-hat... MINDDDFUUUCK!!!

  • I thought so too!! It's all about the Moeller Technique, baby. Youtube has some awesome tutorials...and they actually mention Steve a lot. =)

  • hes overkill for journey steve is so fucking versatile

  • saw him yesterday in germany

    WOW

  • AWSOME!

  • Dude they are selling signature sonor steve smith drum kits on musicians friend for 8000$! Actually a good deal for how amazing they sound, and all of the hardware that comes with.

  • Still, that is quite expensive. All Sonor drums are so nice but so expensive. SQ2's are what I wanted but they are impossible to get.

  • (Steve gadd) is much better

  • All around best drummer alive!!!

  • i go to a show in amsterdam (Badhoevedorp of him tonightt =D

  • went to his drum clinic last nite, absolutley amazing. never seen anthin as good

  • in shorncliffe?

    mee too

    was great

  • one of the greatest drummers who ever lived.....and he lives in my hometown!!..too cool...

  • why did he leave Journey?

  • along with some personality conflicts, he out grew them musically and discovered his love to be an educator.

  • Why the fuck was a drummer this good in a band like Journey anyway?

  • He was proving that a band can be talented AND popular; although it doesn't happen often.

  • Dude, out of Berklee to Jean Luc Ponty and then to Montrose who backed up Journey. They fired Ansyley Dunbar and Steve had taken a liking to the band. So he slummed and made tons o' bucks and then got out when their monstrous egos blew them apart. He then went back to his school chums and formed Vital Information and had the bucks to produce it. We are all better for the money Journey made for Steve Smith. Vital Info would have never existed without them.

  • He i a musically talented Buddy Rich...

  • crazy hihat!!!

  • i got the chance to assist at a masterclass of smith the last week and i have to say that it was one of the best experiences of my short life

  • # 1 in my books he is my all time fave drummer!!

  • ya know,i've never been a real journey fan, but thin guy could persaude me into it. i like what i've heard from them so far, but i haven't really listen to much of them.I'm usually a fan of any band with an exceptional drummer, and this guy is definately great.

  • Jesus christ this guy is totally outstanding.

  • Yes! Jesus Christ is outstanding!

  • Holy Hi-Hat! WTF WAS THAT!? Steve Smith pwns.

  • I like him cause he has rythem in his solos, not just speed

  • How does he get his hi hat like that in the begining?!?! thats so friggin cool

  • he has his hihat clamp really loose, and he said that the hihats either start that themselves or he has to give them a small tap to get the started.

  • his stick control is just out of this world!

  • His hi hat foot work always amazes me.

  • awesome, i really enjoy his technique, btw his vic virth drumsticks series are amazing!! my favs!

  • äje chäjjin

  • awesome

  • how is he getting the hihat to move so much with just his foot!!!

  • it's easy, do eights as normally you'd do but move the heel from left to right to left to right etc. instead of up and down

  • WHATS THAT SNARE DRUM??

  • its like a 15 pound solid brass snare made by sonor

  • holy shit!

    nice....

  • Sonor Artist Series 14" X 5" thin maple shell with single flange hoops.

  • christ sakes! every time there's a great clip of an amazing drummer some ingnorant little prick has to piss all over it by saying Neil Pert or Joey Jordinson is better. grow up.

  • Ehr.. I start thinkin' it's not only 'bout practice...

  • Whoah, why the hell does everyone feel a need to compare drummers.

With so many excellent drummers out there today, there is NO best. There are hundreds of AMAZING professional, and non professional drummers out there, and to compare them would be simply stupid.

On a lighter note, look at his hats.

  • I agree, Comparing drummers is ridiculous. There are so many different categories that they can be placed under. Some are better than others just in differnt ways, like some are faster but others are more technical.

  • Yeah I'm pretty tired of It too.

  • Peart is great great great but he's not better than Steve Smith.

Peart is a definite innovator of rock drumming, but he couldn't touch the jazz that Smith can play.

Neil is for sure one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, but jazz he ain't! lol

  • dont retarded man, be cool.

  • wat the hell is that suppose to mean. all i said is that neil is way better than him in my opinion.

  • I dont think anyone on youtube cares about your opinion...

  • be cool man!!! i just said smith is one of the best!! XD but if you analyze this: i a little bit illogical to comment that some one is better than.... if you know almost every person that search for smith is a huge fan!! XD, smith is no my favorite, but i think is one of the best(bozzio, virgil,Harrison, weckl, tomas haake, morgan agren,JoJo Mayer,etc)... i also enjoy Dolmayan, i know he is not the best, but you really can enjoy his compositions, rhythms, etc!

    cheers!

  • ok ok but my favs are neil peart and joey jordison. umm this cant really measure up to them in my opinion. umm but i do enjoy watchin this but i am just sayin......

  • smith is one of the best

  • hmmmmmm not in my books. there alre better drummers than him!!!

  • One of my all time favorite drummers. He is a master in every sense of the word.

  • everything he plays is effortless and precious

  • eh jazz drummers were the first to ever start using double bassdrums, all the old bigdrummers used double bass.....

  • I didn't know that... good to know

  • sorry i meant to say,big band drummers, not big drummers....

  • smith rocks!!! XD

  • he makes it look so easy he is so screaming good I love it

  • he can do it all, very smart drummer

  • A TRUE master! Flawless in every way.

  • HAHA!! Nice a jazz drummer using DB, never seen a lot of jazz players use DB.

  • lol. my favorite drummer. look at his hats from :05 to :14 secs. hilarious.

  • Steve smith is incredible! So versatile and the sheer beauty and complexity of his playing is outstanding.

  • steve smith was a very smart learner. you gotta be great at learning, being good is then the easy part. this guy went step by super tedious step his entire life (and there has been thousands of steps) and i dont think he missed any so far, and he is still getting better and better.

  • this guy is great

but my favorite is Bobby Jarzombek <<<he's SSSOOOO great!

  • Apples to oranges.

  • I thought it was impossible to mix diferent techniques, style, swing, dynamics, mucicality, and talent in perfect balance, but Steve is the living proof that is just a matter of practice, patience and... oh yeah, TALENT.

  • got to see him in a clinic and with vital information twice in vegas. i was so floored, when i tried to talk to him i became a total idiot. sorry steve!

  • anyone know what ride it is?

    its dam sweet...

anyway, imaging getting paid to do this!! : P

    SWEEET!

  • im pretty sure that its a 21" K Special Dry ride from zildjian. this is just sick drumming

  • COINCIDENCE!

guess what i got give for xmas : D

only thing different (u might be wrong?)

wqas that it was K custom....or maybe u assumed that i must b k custom cos the K line doesnt do that....oh well.... : P

  • hahaha yeah sorry k custom. those rides are some of the nicest ive seen zildjian make

  • yeah dude, i was swinging on one in guitar center today. such a great sound and feel come from that cymbal.

  • from 1:23 to 1:36 is sweet...the stick is just bouncing in between the snare and his fingers... i took a clinic from him and he is phenomenal

  • Well when he was playing in journey he didnt have as much freedom to play like this. You just cant get away with as much in rock because its a more simple style so you never really know how good they are tell you see what they can do in a solo.

  • and I also happen to pre fur Bonham

  • he has great technique and his strokes r raw

  • i like his style.but i prefear bonham

  • yes many drummers pre fear bonham before they play.

  • OMG look at his hands insane!! amazing i dont play the drums but i no thats extremely hardcore! XD

  • i'm novice and...french...

but i' like very much steve and mike portnoy and thomas lang...ok ?

  • He is good, but he doesn't seem that amazing. Mike Portnoy, Bill Bruford, and Neil Peart. So does the guy in Kamelot. Idk, he doesn't seem that amazing. I have a friend in a music academy that seems just as good.

  • great drummer, but he is sooo up himself. I met him at a clinic once and he was like "Im the man, buy my cds" and "Im sooo good" and "why isnt everyone as good as me, hmm maybe because I have talent"

quite sad really, my friend really idolized him, but was very disappointed after the clinic (not because of him drumming of course)

  • dude practice everyday i say he has the most executed hands ever

  • good drumming, but he Does like his snare...... not saying its a bad thing; but for me it seems a little to.....centered on the drums.

  • That's the proof that study is really helpfull!!!

Steve you Kick ass and you have a good taste!!!!

  • when steve smith played in journey he was not this good..

  • its called evolution. drummers arent supposed to be over drumming, dont be silly

  • well i'll be better than i am now in 26 years too

  • when he played in journey he was as good as now... This virtuoso playing does not fit with Journey's balladry. Can you really imagine Open Arms or Faitfully featuring this solo? No, right? Instead, think that Steve Smith trademarked that slow drumming style that characterises adult-oriented rock and ballads, just as Steve Perry influenced every singer of this genre

  • Totally amazing technique!1:23
