You can watch part 2 to this solo on the Vic Firth site. I wish someone would upload it to youtube because part 2 is one of the greatest fucking things I've ever seen.
@DrummaAddict You loosen the felts on the hats a lot and then like, slam the hat with the stick and then immediately splash, really close like a flam. Then keep splashing at a moderately fast pace. It's easier to do with heavier hi-hats. I learned it from watching Keith Carlock. Look him up.
I dont know what is so flattering to me about watching people play traditional from this angle. It just looks so graceful, and Steve makes everything look so effortless. This is awesome!!
I can't believe I've never given this guy his props. Knowing he played in Journey, which no offense but I consider bubble gum rock, I figured he could only be so good. Since then whenever I heard how good he was, I just assumed he was overrated. Obviously I was sadly mistaken, cause this guy can flat out play. What a technician, and a very cool guy as well.
I've always played match grip, but I'm pretty sure just emphasizing the push fingers (don't know the technical term). He's doing the same thing the whole time, just much faster. It's the same thing you'd do playing match grip. Use the index knuckle and thumb as the fulcrum, and use your fingers to push the stick down. Dennis Chambers talked about practicing using each finger to get them all strong. I think it helps with dynamics. I'm no expert, but I hope that helps.
Well Travis Barker is, but some one like Steve Smith and Dave Weckl, those are simply the masters along with John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Dennise Chambers....
Oh no you didnt ! How can you mention travis barker in the same sentence with Steve Smith. Im with MCshlthead, I hope you where kidding about whats his name..
For those curious how Steve Smith sounds in a progressive metal situation, he recorded an album with Tony Macalpine called "Edge of Insanity." His work on that album is amazing.
A few things...he has the tilt adjusted on the bottom hat, his hats are set loose and he's 'heeling' the pedal (nice and hard) in order to "splash" the hats. They'll just start going like that after a few stomps. Good luck with it. Have fun.
To the guy that thinks Steve Gadd is abetter drummer than this. Well we know you aren't much of a drummer. I never thoght Steve would evolve to this level. I honestly didn't. I used to see him in Journey in 70's and thought he was a good rock drummer. But this is special. Don't see how his skinny forearms can propel so well. Oh well seeing is believing. Yahoo Steve
Dude they are selling signature sonor steve smith drum kits on musicians friend for 8000$! Actually a good deal for how amazing they sound, and all of the hardware that comes with.
Dude, out of Berklee to Jean Luc Ponty and then to Montrose who backed up Journey. They fired Ansyley Dunbar and Steve had taken a liking to the band. So he slummed and made tons o' bucks and then got out when their monstrous egos blew them apart. He then went back to his school chums and formed Vital Information and had the bucks to produce it. quite sad really, my friend really idolized him, but was very disappointed after the clinic (not because of him drumming of course)
when he played in journey he was as good as now... This virtuoso playing does not fit with Journey's balladry. Can you really imagine Open Arms or Faitfully featuring this solo? No, right? Instead, think that Steve Smith trademarked that slow drumming style that characterises adult-oriented rock and ballads, just as Steve Perry influenced every singer of this genre
You can watch part 2 to this solo on the Vic Firth site. I wish someone would upload it to youtube because part 2 is one of the greatest fucking things I've ever seen.

when he played in journey he was as good as now...
