@malachy1847 the people the goverment and not lest the catholic church made it almost impossible to be protestant in eire.protestants who married outside the own community had no choices any children had to be brought up catholic otherwise the state got involved isolated examples indeed spun the myth that most protestants are the rich minority. nothing could be futher from the truth.the educated always got voted into office the uneducated followed them not saying its right but thats the truth
@CORBYLOYALIST Can you give examples of Southern state stopping protestants bringing their children up in their religion? agree the 26c state gave the catholic church 2 large a role in the country, but that has and is changing. I agree the church has too much of a role in education, but this is also changeing. My cousin is married to a southern protestant and they bring their children up in the Church of Ireland faith and the children attend state funded church of Ireland schools.
@malachy1847 talking about the boot on the neck of minority your lucky the british didnt treat you as bad as the people in eire treated protestants you would only be 10% of population in northern ireland thats how hard done by yous are .what difference to the poor man in dublin or anywere else in eire when the republic was founded nothing.and dont say at lest they were free no they werent in fact it got harder dont let the facts stand in the way of republican history
@CORBYLOYALIST But the people of the ROI didn't treat the Protestant community poorly.Granted, there are some isolated examples of discrimination but the difference is that it wasn't endemic like it was in N.I. Take a look at people like Basil Brooke who actively encouraged Protestant businessmen not to employ Catholics.Your community consistently voted people like this into office which is what made the problem endemic. The ROI isn't perfect but it isn't even as bad as Scotland let alone N.I.
Ian Paisley is an old dog but he should realise that some would take offence at the term 'Romanism'. It's considered a derogatory. thefreedictionaryDOTcom/Romanism
He makes an interesting point about reading the works of St Patrick, etc...there is no getting away from the fact that doing so would open people's eyes to early Irish and Latin etc. It has helped Paisley realise that there is a huge heritage attached to Irish (and Scot's Gaelic) and that it is a very old European language, almost as old as Latin itself. St Patrick himself spoke Irish and lived in Co. Down for much of his life. This fact isn't lost on Ian Paisley! Maybe other 'Unionists' too?
Northern Ireland's power sharing Government have been disaster, 10 years ago there were 28 segregating walls & now there are 90 segregating walls in Ulster. Kids who never done a day's work in there lives are running riots in Ulster. Arshad Khan will smash so called peace walls with tanks within 1 hour. click Justice party UK.
@2010WARISHELL I don't want to get into a 'Wordfest' in that regard... But Demogrophics would tell us outherwise.. the Northern Ireland is changing more rapidly than one might think. Unionists no longer control Belfast City Council which was unthinkable a generation ago, Even the seriously 'Airbrushed' 2001 Census put Majority Community at around 56% ..Next years Census figures may indeed see i futher dilution of that position because the older age profile.. Well thats what the numbers Say
Believe me the people of Northern Ireland would only join the South if the Conditions were right. And the south needs a strong political group on the left or centre left to achieve this.
...Rather than the ultra Nationalistic, Ultra Catholic society that evolved under Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and teh Irish Catholic Church. with its intrinsic class divisions... and poor economic performance ....That in essence scared the unionists out of a united Ireland......
The Northern statlet Set up on a Sectarian headcount .. with Carson, Craigavon and Brookeboroughat the helm was a paradise for Unionist hegomony... supported for decades by Westminster bankrolled by the british these despots had everything they wanted and felt safe and secure in this Orange State a sort of Tribal homeland ruled by the Protestant ascendancy what a preversion of democracy.... with their boot on the neck of the minority community.. they for got that Croppies DON'T lie down
Personally I would rather have an international socialist than a patriotic right winger. The IRA of teh 70s Paisley and Pearse would be what I call Patriots. The people of the rising were more interested in a just, open Libitarian society.....
But Connolly was a way ahead of Pearse and many others when it came to a vision for the future. And the vision has never really materialised for socialists or even moderate centre left politics in eth ROI ever since.
Pearse meant well but he was quite aloff from reealty . He thought the risisng would suceed. Connolly knew he would fail but wanted to be a Martyr and sow the seeds of rebelion.........The sucessive right wing ROI governmments have neglected the memory of Connolly in the south ever since. Ahern was a big Pearse sentimentalist.
All the historians at the major colleges in Ireland recognise Connolly started the actual rising itself which is what I mean. Started the actual armed insurection. Connolly was chomping at the bit because he feared if it was delayed it could have been aborted. Clarke and Pearse wanted to wait a while until they had stronger resourses and support.
Irish people gotta move away from religious association...for gods sake James Connolly was an athiest ( he started1916) and...Dev and his chums made it a very catholic state...that was a major problem....still inherint today which has prevented peace in the north
@Maguirearch I agree with you that we certainly need to move away from religion. In fact i think the whole world should move away from religion.
But it was not James Connelly who started 1916, it was in fact Thomas Clarke who was the mastermind behind it. He however handed the right of military leader to Pearse only asking to be the first signature on the Proclamation. And Connelly later before it started decided to unite with them since he did not agree with their pact at the start. But i agree
@IrishTHFCfan A man that helped lead Northern Ireland to peace and power sharing with people he once regarded as enemies is a "disgraceful" human being??????
I'm a nationalist and want a United Ireland, but I could have a beer(whoops! he doesn't drink, I forgot!), I mean a cup of tea with this man!
Ian Paisley has moved on from the past! Why can't you?
Eh. lol."Ulsters are a strange people" He led the hate behind them "strange people" fgs.Yeah he's come a long way wearing a shamrock, let me tell ya,lmao.
All languages develop first as dialects of one or two languages and then develop in isolation. Ulster Scots is an off-shoot of Middle-English that was spoken by Gaelic speakers. It should have language status in my opinion.
it shoudnt have language status because it's not a language, it's a dialect. why should the tax payer in the north pay for funding for something that is essentially english with an accent?? it's not a language and the only reason certain people seem to push it in the north, from what I've seen, is to answer people who look for funding for the Irish language and trying to say that Ulster Loyalists have a culture of their own that's unique to them and not shared by people in Britain. tis bullshit!
Ulster-Scots is something that happened naturally in that area hundreds of years before you and I were born. It is essentially English, correct, but not modern English. One can find vestiges of Old-English within it. Why not support it, doesn't it enrich the area? It has it's own literature that you or I would have a hard time reading unless we studied it. Broad-Scots is spoken in Scotland and is a bit different than the Ulster-Scots. There's a tremendous amount of history behind these.
It's interesting how the Roman Catholic Church never recognized the the Irish kings, but always regonized those in England, even after the Reformation. Rome was never a friend to Ireland.
Either was the Protestant regimes. The only time we benifited from Christianity is when WE had full control of it. When our Monks brought it to Britain and Europe.
Very true. But back then Irish Christianity had very little resemblance to what was going on in Roman controlled Europe at the time. What's your opinion of the indigenous religion of Ireland before the introduction of Christianity?
well from what I can see. the Irish Christianity wasnt as much a new faith as it was a development, and its position in society was exactly the same as it was in Pre Christian. instead of a big Cairn you went to a graveyard, instead of going to the circle on a Sunday you went to the church, kings still payed money to make religious centres and learned people but now the druids were called monks.instead of people telling pagan tales they wrote them down in manuscripts added a "St" to their deity
Thank God Rev Paisley has opened his eyes, hatred is an awful covering, it clouds all rationale & compromise.
