its not really a chain reaction, each person throws the next person. its not the very first person that throws all of them. each person gets the next person in a iku lock so they cant let go.

obviously if your hands are locked and the person your holding hands with falls down your going down too.

idiots, Aikido is difinitevely one of the master martial arts. It is the pressure of the tug to make one fall initiating the pressure upon each arm in turn to cause the chain reaction. This is completely legit, the blackbelts are proficient enough to hold the arm even while they fall... this looks dumb but it is a challenge to accomplish and brings out the point of Aikido.
