  • My favorite song by them!

  • This has definitely a Motown groove to it.

  • Is there some logical reason why Dazza made this video "unavailable to iPad users" ???

It is almost 2012 ya know...

  • did betty sing leader of the pack? she had jimmy,s ring, i think, anyway, poor old jimmy, he skidded for 8 miles into 5 greenhouses, tragic,

  • This could be a hit now - by the right artist and brought to a modern arrangement.

  • Dig those Pants

  • Heard the Shangri Las music growing up, always liked the atmosphere they captured on records. I revisited it when Amy Winehouse cited them as an influence on Back to Black, which you can hear clearly - she had excellent musical taste.

  • @ImaniHekima yeah Amy winehouse was such a talented woman with great musical taste. I saw that interview too where she talks bout the shangri-las and the shirelles as an influence to her music :)

  • hey they could move with rythm

  • My mother looked like Betty as a teenager.

  • @sewdavicious She must be very pretty.

  • Mary Weiss - classic girl group lead - rock on Shangs!

  • I love Betty! Wow! What a cutie!

  • Mary still performs occasionally.

  • this is where amy winehouse got so much of her inspiration. RIP to amy and marge and Mary Ann may you all RIP and live on/rock on Betty and mary. im 16 and love this group so much.

  • Mary weiss is hot

  • These girls were totally unique. Hated their songs as a kid, feel in love with them as an adult. They are well represented on my ipod.

  • nice outfitz!ooo000OOOoooo

  • does anyone know what month of 65 this was ???

  • @arealOpia1991

    October

  • @dazzababes smart ass

  • they are great such fabulous girls ah they are sweet the music is lovely i like them so much

  • WOW im not from this music era but my parents were and my mom was the same age as Mary during this time and I grew up to this music and it is bad ass and talent like that should always be appericated!!

  • i still play the great group so often thankyou for posting my favourite girl group

  • I love them so much, I wish I were a Shangri-La. But alas and alec I was born in 64, and heard their songs in the womb and as a baby and toddler, and they were then and still are forever in my heart. I hope to do them justice when I sing their songs with my band! RIP twins and long live Mary and Betty!

  • @TheDj3a That's tragic! I didn't realize both of the twins passed away! I know one of them died of a drug overdose sometime in the 80's.

  • @TheDj3a OOPS! I stand corrected. I just found out the first twin passed away in 1970 from drug overdose & the other twin 26 years later in 1996. It's still tragic! They weren't that old.

  • beautiful the music and the ladies ah just magic

  • LOLoutloud... this so twilightzone. Zorro in the boudouire.

  • Margie's expression when the audience starts screaming is the cutest thing ever.

  • These gals were the template for "I know What Boys Like", by The Waitresses.

  • keep pressing 0.08 it's funny

  • Someone said they were the best of the girl groups. I starting to thing they may have been right.

  • nice

  • Hot!!

  • @dazzababes Spandex wasn't invented yet. Feel a bathing suit from the 60s its stiff.

  • @shawnamclellan

Sorry, I meant Lurex. Same fabric as Catwoman wore in the 1960's Batman TV series.

Though I believe Spandex was invented in 1959, so it was around.

  • Awesome song & footage! Was this a single? It sounds better than the melancholy "I Can Never Go Home Anymore."

They were a great influence 16-20 years later for the Go-Go's, Bananarama, Bangles, Tracey Ullman, Toni Basil, Klymaxx, and 30 years later for the Spice Girls.

  • Awesome song & footage! Was this a single? It sounds better than the melancholy "I Can Never Go Home Anymore."

  • They were amazing. KInda punk - but real pop with some kickin' beat. Like this one.

  • Only 2 of the beloved Shangrilas have left us. 2 still survive!

  • punk

  • What a shame that 3 of the Shangi Las left us so early. They were all beautiful women.Long Live Mary,Peace Des

  • betty was very pretty along with the lead singer..my mom had this outfit along with the go go boots!!! people especially gals dresserd a hell of alot better then they do today!! judy.. and yes people were much thinner then..i buy vintage clothing and can tell you a size 7 the size i am now-- back then was considered large!!

  • The one thing that confused me when I was a kid was that the members changed at times. Sometimes it was the one blonde girl and the other two. Then it was two and two. Anyone know what was up with that?

  • @lasktguy ok the original line-up is Mary Weiss (the lead), Betty Weiss (her sister the one between the twins) and of course the twin, Betty rarely did appearances with the group cause she didn't like touring so that's why they appeared as a trio

  • Class song!

  • i love the shangri=las

  • This song would be a hit even today. Shangri Las had a lot of classics!

  • so many wet dreams...

  • Where are their mics?

  • Mary's voice is sexy

  • Mary was the LEADER OF THE PACK in many way.

WHY ARE THEY EXCLUDED FROM THE HALL OF FAME????

  • Mary had it all !!

  • are they wearing latex? it doesnt look like leather.

  • @ohweloveeverton

    Lurex

  • @dazzababes lurex? oh that's funny! : ) oh mary!!!

  • Starting to get the mid 60s sound that I fuckin hate here.

  • any live performances of remember walking in the sand? or maybe?

  • @lindseysquirrel

They performed "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" on 'Where the Action Is' in 1965, but I only have clips of the performance, not the full thing.

  • @dazzababes

I wonder if there's a clip of them doing "I Can Never Go Home Anymore."

  • who cares,,I would

  • This tune sounds as if they were trying to capture a Motown-style sound - it only made it to number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1965-

  • Glad these clips are still around. Mary is awesome. Very sexy. All were great.

  • I think Betty is gorgeous! I love this song!

  • I do the dance routine in the car......

  • Betty doesn't sing much.

  • Never heard that one,,,,,nice,, thanks

  • These girls are just awesome. They always will be. Love the way Margie shamelessly looks into the camera as she lip synchs the lead by Mary.

  • Mary, if you are reading this, know that it may not have seemed like much at the time, but your work and your art lives on and on. We live looking forward, but we only understand what we do looking backward.

  • ♫ One of the all-time greats. ♫ The outfits they wore were extremely sexy and daring at the time, but they had the looks to pull it off. Love 'em! ♥♥♥

  • Why isn't she sining in 2:03 ?

  • Mary, Margie, Maryann, and Liz!! AWESOME! You are loved always! RIP M and M.

  • mary and and betty r hot...................damn

  • Mary Weiss - truly awesome.

Thanks for posting - much appreciated

  • They were so underrated.

  • @DA90027 I couldn't agree more.

  • The Shangs were hot back in the day. Even then, not all the girls could get into those black eather outfits we enjoy drooling over here! But, in my mind, Betty turned out to be the one with the long-term looks. Google her and see what I mean. Something special...her daughter too. (No slam on Mary, who had that super-cute look too...we really see it from 1:21 to 1:23 here.) and has kept trim and attractive, over the years, for sure.

  • At 15 and at 61 Mary Weiss was and is the hottest female artist of all time in my opinion!

  • LOVE those dance moves - outta sight!!

  • This tune only made it to #99 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1965-

  • hermoso

  • The reason pubescent girls are always screaming on these things is not because they're in love with John, Paul, George, Ringo or anyone else for that matter, they're screaming because they love beautiful chord-structures.

  • Trying to work that out! What about in the street outside the hotel, or at the airport when the fab 4 arrived in USA?

Much as I love beautiful chord structures, at a lot of the concerts you couldn't hear the chords because of the screaming! Just a thought...:-)

  • Naaah. All the time, in the street outside the hotel, at the airport, under the din of shrieking chicks, those Krazy Kord structures were working their strange, strange method.

  • Hahaha. That is so cute.

  • Favorite video of my absolute favorite girl group of the 1960"s.

  • Hot stuff. Wow. Fantastic song.

  • I was never into these ladies as a kid, but now I can appreciate Mary's voice and the distinct style. I actually thought that they were a black group when I was younger. They've so much soul.

  • I love Mary Weiss, she is in my top 15 all time female singers in the rock era. She is a whole lot better than the female singers today. LOVE YOU MARY.

  • Absolutely right! Tough and sexy.

  • @b42baritone she's the deffinition of sexy. look up that word, and you will find a picture of her there...

  • Gotta come back on here and say I love this video! Half the clicks on here are mine! There are just bits and pieces of Shang stuff here on YouTube...and this video is the whole package, and really the only one where you get a full dose of the Shangs at the top of their game...and including Betty! I have two copies of this record and love playing it. I am still looking for an abolutely stone Mint copy, which I will get!! So sad that Margie and Mary Ann have passed away.

  • Hey Paul, how come when I read your stuff on here I am both amazed, informed and shocked. Like when did the twins pass on??? I just saw a Music info tape on them for 89 that they were suing some guy for using their Name for a different group etc!!!! This is all a big surprise.

  • give me the way women moved back then over a bullshit 'booty' dance any day, pure class

  • i love this video...one of the few that shows all 4 members (betty was a part time member). And it shows--betty was a step behind in the dancing and singing. Very cool--makes it seem real to those of us that never got to see them in life.

  • Nice observations Bunny! I love having Betty in here, and yes, it is obvious that she is kind of going through the motions / looking over at Mary Ann and Margie to check things out! Incidentally, Betty "grew up" to be really beautiful! Wow! And so sad that Margie and Mary Ann passed away at young ages.... Love Mary Weiss who has said the Shangs' street-girl image wasn't close to their real personalities...which were really basically representative of typical teenagers of the day!

  • Hey Rosseggers, funny you mention motown backing, some people from motown at the time did have some thing to do with this song, a couple of guys from motown, I don't know if they were in the studio, or songwriting or arranging it, I forgot the story, but the funk brothers were not part of it. Oh yeah now I remember it, go to red bird entertainment. com and click on the shangri-las story, it mentions how the 2 guys from motown did have something to do with it.

  • You're right Eddieb715. Mary Wilson admitted that because Motown didn't always pay the artists properly, many of them moonlighted behind Motown's back so maybe this was one of their outside projects.

  • Interesting, Iaminage. This sounds so much like the Supremes' "Come See About Me".

Not the chords or tempo or melody, but the instrumentation. But, as if they all were in the studio and someone said:

"Okay, you've played 'Come See About Me' for the Supremes, now let's do 'Right Now And Not Later' for the Shangri-Las. Hit it!"

  • Hey if you want to hear some other "similar" Melodies. Listen to Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry and then "Fun Fun Fun by The Beach Boys. Or Uptight by Stevie Wonder and then Church Of The Poison Mind by Culture Club, Reunited by Peaches & Herb and Penny Lover by Lionel Ritche. You'll see what I mean.

  • That's because it was produced by Robert Bateman who had left Motown.

  • @Holdenon3 hmmmm...I was thinking more along the lines of "Stop! In The Name of Love"--

  • astonishing shangs as always

  • Thanks so very much for posting these awesome vintage footage of one of the greats-TheShangri-Las.

Imo Mary is one of the greatest singers in Rock n' Roll. :)

  • sounds like a Phil Spector production

  • Is it me but does this sound like a funk brothers backing track. This has motown written all over it. Never heard this before today. This should have a HUGE hit. oh well

  • What can I say? Shangs FOREVER!!

  • Been a Shanri La's fan for years and never heard this song. Thanks for posting.

  • Hey Orange....amen to that. They could have left the camera on her the whole video!

  • 1:22..Mary...so sexy

  • I have read a few more articles on the Shangri-las and watched some interviews here on YouTube. I never thought of them as "one of the ones" in terms of Girl Groups... Sure, they had a couple of really nice hits... But I have gained a lot more appreciation for Mary Weiss. She really does sing with a lot of power and feeling for her age! And the Shangri-la songs, like "Leader of the Pack" required more than just lip-syncing ability... Mary brought a lot of expression and emotion on stage.

  • OMG! Not only were the Shangs HOT, but they could actually sing unlike the doughheads out there now! Mary and Betty/Liz hot then and hot now! The twins are beautiful. RIP M AND M.

  • How many girls do you see on the streets these days, or coming out of McDonald's after powering down a double-cheesburger with super-size fries and an extra large Coke, couid get into those outfits! The Shangri-Las were hot.

  • Yeah, but they were very young. I think they probably had average sized figures. They were constantly touring so I'm sure they had more than their share of fast-food, but the gruelling schedule they had to adhere to would knock the weight off.

  • @dazzababes true.. my mom, my aunts..were all this thin!!! i am getting older and purposely dropped out sweets and fats..i do not want to fall into that "fat trap" that it seems alot of older gals fall into!!

  • @PaulDePace Only Mary was really good looking at all

  • @DaRandom90 Actually, Betty was the prettiest. She looked like Bardot.

  • It's so nice to see a clip of all 4!!

  • Great song! Margie gets tickled @ 1:35. Someone in the audience screams and she looks left and up and then when she turns facing friont she laughs about it! It's funny! Mary Ann is looking at Marge--like what the heck? Just an observation on my part. RIP M and M.

  • I love their choreograph moves and those skin tight outfits - amazing!!!!!!!!

  • love this.....has some "motown sound" in this song. Sounds like "Stop! In Name Of Love...sample

awesome! geezz over 44 years ago LOL

  • Well, I have to admit, it does have a Motown-esque style to it!!

  • It has a Motown feel because it was co-written and produced by Robert Bateman, a former writer/producer at Motown.

He was involved mainly with The Marvelettes.

  • WELL, then, that explains it! Its a shame this tune didn't even make the top 40 - I think it stalled at #56 in early 1965-

  • I'm pretty sure it only reached #97 (or #99) on Billboard's Hot 100.

No clue why it did so poorly. In my opinion it's better than "Out In The Streets" or "Give Us Your Blessings".

  • thanks for the chart clarification, I wasn't quite sure - when they debuted this song on the "Shivaree" TV show in 1965, you would have thought for sure this would have at least hit the Top Ten!!

  • @RecordsOrama At that time there were tons and tons of great bands...very stiff competition...now that we look back we see that all of the groups back then and there music even B sides would be consider number one now.....Mary keep on rockin girl..I love your new CD

  • Classic stuff. Love it.

  • The Shangs were my idols growing up in the sixties. My friends and I listened to their records non-stop. Mary today looks great and still sings. Thanks for posting this!

  • wow they were dressing pretty risky for those days! i like it..

  • It was the prelude to Woodstock -- when everybody just got naked and got it over with. Like it did not mean anything. Means a lot now -- kind of like it meant a lot back in the mid-twentieth century.

  • I think Mary Weiss reads these posts, so i want to let her know she had nice hips!

  • It's true. The way they're dressed was considered Scandalous in the 60s. But this is what made them such a hit. They were pretty, sexy in the way they dressed and moved on the stage, and they sounded good. That was rare in the 60s. Most female singers weren't so Hot.

  • Love it !!!!!!

  • Wooaaaa! this looks great sounds great bu tI think I've missed something here for years - thought they only did one record. Sure I've heard them for years on the soul scene but just never connected!

  • Look at them in that LEATHER!! SCANDALOUS in those days!!

  • Ha ha, It's actually Spandex!

  • Brillliant!

  • I have just discovered the incredible

Shangrilas! My older sisters use to listen to their records, but thanks to You Tube, I have had a chance to experience the magnificent Shangs! Mary you ROCK! RIP: Margie and Maryanne.

  • They were the sexiest ever !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Soooooooooooooooooooo hot. and cool music, yep.

  • motown meets shadow morton! it would have been fun for pop and r&b if this had happened more often. then maybe justin timberlake wouldn't be viewed as such a phenomenon.

  • Very true, music like this is so great to have stream threw the ears.

  • Great song!

  • Ma was a big fan of the Shangri-las..I see why! Great sound!

  • Attractive and sweet love you guys! Mary you are so pretty.

  • The Shangri-Las made some great records, and some of their best("Right Now and Not Later", "He Cried", "Past, Present, and Future")weren't big hits.

  • Did you See the way Mary Ann dissed the host?

  • which ones mary ann??

  • The last one the host introduces on the left of Betty

  • i know im srry i pposted the commetn before i watched it to see that he intro duced them i feel really stupid after i posted it

  • Don't worry about it, but did you see the way she dissed him though?

  • yea who did the higher voice at the end when they sang right now and not later baby mary or betty

  • I'm not sure Mary and Betty do sound alot like each other at times, but I think it was Mary

  • Never mind, It was Betty

  • The Bad girls of Rock & Roll were just so awesome.

  • I love this song! It's so addictive. I really love Mary's voice!

  • my fave rave Las singles

  • Love the outfits!

  • Absolutely awesome!!!

    The best.

  • ....how this song never got to the top ten at least is a mystery to me. And let me add that ALL FOUR of them were beautiful as well....

  • and look at the backup singers what they're wearing....exactly what's out on the racks today! yikes!

  • you gotta remember the competition in 1965 was hellacious, beatles, stones, motown, etc i imagine there were a lot of great perfommances that couldnt climb into the top ten. i agree with you however

  • ....most definitely! This was probably a big hit in very select spots, where there were still people who didn't "get" the Beatles or the Stones...kinda like Phil Spector music struck a chord with those same folks...

  • I agree with you 100%, Packard.. I just discovered this song recently and I absolutely LOVE it. And all four of them were indeed beautiful (Mary and Betty still are).

What I think made them so popular was the fact that teens could identify with their attitude, their emotions and their pain of heartbreak, all of which easily shone through Mary's voice.

  • mary just had a record come out on the Norton label last year

  • Beautiful girls, great voices, driving bass, skin-tight black leather, and ATTITUDE. I'm 18 again!

  • Hands Down "Best Damn Girl Group Ever" does not get any cooler! WAAAAAAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME!!!! Awesome vocals!!!!! Todays groups, need notepad in hand!

  • Betty aka Liz has been married for the past 26 years and has kids.Mary told me that she does not do music anymore the other 2 have passed.

    HH

  • wonder what happen to betty. any pics of her today.

  • These girls, like the supremes and the ronettes were very good, and totally hot! Mary is so cute, and sings beautifully!!

  • The Shangs & Theronettes were the epitome of the " street wise tough withaheart of gold " girl groups

  • Yeah, you'r so right! Girls with attitude and talent to back it up too! Sweet!

  • My favorite girl group of all time.

  • Long all by the Shangri-las. So Memory Lane!

  • sounds like a motown song!
