Good news earth is soon to become the second planet from the Sun.
Mercury moved 2 million miles closer to the sun in the last 12 months and is expected to double that by the year 2012, effects will be tremendous luminous trails of light as it is slowly engulfed by the sun
Caloris basin is 940 miles in diameter. That's huge for a planet of this size. who knows, it could be the biggest plain-on-planet ( as a ratio of relative sizes) anywhere in the whole solar system.
If Mercury's days were only eight hours long, would the planet be a lot cooler? I mean if the planet had four hours for day and four hours for night, it might be just as temperate as earth. Let me know what you think.
compare the moon with mercury. it looks like one and the same. In a hollow earth you would see the moon from both sides of the earth, and that is so. that´s why people ask, why do we see the moon, if people of the other side see it,too. So they think it´s mercury. But it shouldn´t be possible to see the mercury at the nightsky, because it is an inner planet, so it cant be "behind" on the dark side of the earth
Hmm, I think the lack of an atmosphere is more of the problem. I'm pretty sure the temperature would fluctuate rapidly to both extremes, as there is nothing to keep the heat in or out like there is on Earth. That's my best guess, anyways ^^
@LifeIsABigPuzzle your not including the fact that its MUCH MUCH closer to the sun. Think of it this way... if you have a roaring campfire and let it die... 4 hours later, the ground under it will still be warm... now imagine that several thousand times larger in scale and you have Mercury... furthermore, the ground inches away from the campfire is similar to scale to that of Mercury's location... where as earth would be right around where you put your lawn chair to enjoy the fire.
@LifeIsABigPuzzle Mercury hasn't got an atmosphere. Heat just disapates when the sun goes away and there's no protection as we have with earth from the sun's heat in day. There is no balance in temperature there.
it could have 1sec of day and 1sec of night and the temperatures would be the same, it depends on how much energy it can absorb from the sun, since it was no atmosphere, it would be very cold if it was at the same distance as Earth, but since it is very close to the sun, its hotter, look at Venus, is the hotter planet on the solar system because its atmosphere is very dense. Hope you got it :)
i refuse to believe that this is what it looks like i think it's bullshit ,,I believe every planet in our solar system looks completely different than what they'd like us to believe.
2 billion miles in 3.5 years? Not bad.

Simple geometric calculus however we are concerned with regards to the debris will it be expelled in to the path of venus, earth etc

Just like the moon. It gets up to 270 C on the bright side and -180 C on the dark side.

@LifeIsABigPuzzle No, the temperatures change rapidly.
