If you don't make a loop around reentry, you are given a huge time penalty. Most teams do it, and there are course operators to be the eyes for the trailing car.
Right, I understand that there is a huge time penalty. If you were at FSAE west, however, GFR pulled the same move and was awfully close to hitting a car coming behind it. A loop can happen in the matter of a 1.5 seconds -- it's just not enough time to have safety precautions in.
I really do think it should be SCCA rules -- an offcourse is an offcourse.
I looked to make sure the track was clear, I also saw the marshal on the other side of the track waving me on. If there had been a car right there I would not have jumped right back on course, but there wasn't.
@taatk1 I was spotting for my photog at West in 2009, when WWU went by...I swear to God it sounded like it had open headers. All the guys around us (OSU, Colorado State, UW were like "SHITTTTTTTT how did that pass noise?"
I really think that reentry maneuver that Akron did should be made illegal. I can only imagine what would happen if the cars weren't so staggered.

Purdue DQ'ed during endurance because they overheated. I think they were running an electronic davies craig water pump that ended up failing.
