Listen to this tune, then listen to Brooklyn, and you'll hear similarities, particularly in the chord structures, Herington's guitar, and the gospel-like piano fills.
No doubt, garwood. My heart broke the day I heard of his passing. Roger Rosenberg is a capable player, but Cornelius had a depth and soulful intuition that just cannot be replaced. I always heard a lot of Stanley Turrentine in his playing. RIP
Hey Rich, when I saw Steely Dan in Cincinnati in 2000, Cornelius was sitting with his wife, out in the public, eating a hot dog and drinking a coke. Nobody seemed to notice him, but I knew who he was. But he was just chilling, and there was no way I was gonna be "that guy" who messed up his personal time. I sometimes regret not asking for an autograph. It would've only taken 4 or 5 seconds. But now that he's gone, I'm so happy I gave those extra 4 or 5 seconds to his wife.
There's a misspelled word in the lyrics. They use "to" when they meant to use "too". If Fagan had caught that he would have insisted a corrected version be made.
Love this as a legitimate song; the groove and performances. Could Cynthia Calhoun enjoy herself anymore?? I found a video of her on youtube performing with Stanley Clarke's former keyboardist, Sunnie Paxson.
I've seen SD twice - Wembley, London in 1996 and Hammersmith, London in 2000 - Both class gigs. Going to Birmingham on 29th June this year to see them again and can't wait. Here in the UK we also have an ACE tribute band called Nearly Dan. Check them out here on youtube, or at a gig near you. (Not to be confused with the Nearly Dan in the US who nicked the name from them, and are pretty much a karaoke act anyway!)
This song always makes me well up.. happened to be one of the most emotional nights of my life when I heard it live last year and for some reason this is the song that makes me most reminiscent
When you hear this song, you know you've made it to the Steely Dan show! Maybe someday it'll be on an album. The next two songs they're "ashamed" of are probably Janie Runaway and "Hey Nineteen".
I agree!! I heard/seen this song during the '03 tour and was bummed that I would probably never hear it again. thanks to carlospc it lives on(at least for now)
Only if they want the album to be extra cheesy. It's a shitty song and they're making fun of their own show I believe. The lyrics are garbage of course. Why would you want to hear it on an album? Just curious...
I understand that you don´t like this song. Shitty song? I liked the chorus a lot, sounds a litle christmas song, but it´s very melodic to me. It´s unsual a band sing a song about your own show, but theres humor in this happy song, I get it and the crowd in the show liked, perfect for openings. and of course, after recorded in the studio, this song can be very different! With these musicians miracles happens. Here in Brazil we don´t have steely fans,Ihear the first time only months ago, bigfannow
Right on man! Glad to hear that the Dan is finding fans in Brazil! If you like the song then dig it. Doesn't matter what I think. Hey, while you're getting into the music, never stop digging and looking for more:
-Gaucho -Donald Fagen's The Nightfly -Two Against Nature -Alive in America -Countdown to Ecstasy -The Royal Scam -Aja -Donald Fagen's Morph the Cat -Donald Fagen's Kamikiriad- Katy Lied. YOU HAVE A LOT OF LISTENING TO DO!
@fzerostrike O que você quer dizer com "Here in Brazil we don´t have steely fans"? Só por quê você acabou de descobrir Steely Dan nada aconteceu antes nem ao mesmo tempo? Toquei Dan profisisonalmente em 1989 (Do it Again).
thank you for posting this vid. I never thoght I would ever hear this song again! the sound and picture quality are top notch, for all your video's. I like the last person's comments they sum it all up!
jon herrington bears a striking resemblance to stephen colbert. is there a way for comedy central to do something with that? musical guests wouldn't hurt an hour show.
The coolest audience participation sing-a-long pocket groove on the planet. Out here in L.A, we digs Steely Dan. This is the best copy of the Steely Dan SHow I've seen or heard on the net. Great job!
SNAP...That really is Cornelius working the Sax!!!

If Donald Fagen catches your spelling of his name(Fagan), he's likely to demand a corrected version.

The Bumpus solo at 2:18 is a great piece of work, especially around 2:25 when the band is making those steamy chord changes!
