@deneb1795... as i understand it, in addition to jettisioning the solid rocket boosters over the water instead of on land.. most satelites travel in a east to west trajectory.. such as the ISS... the launch pads are oriented in a north-south trajectory.. this is why the shuttle completes the roll maneuver after liftoff...
The shuttle has to jettison the booster rockets over the ocean, not over land. Also, at a certain point, the shuttle trades altitude for velocity in order to orbit the earth (in other words, it orbits the earth parallel to it).
it rolls to face east, which makes it fly "faster" in relation to the earth. this makes easier to attain escape velocity required to break free of the atmosphere
The main purpose of the roll is to place the heading of the vehicle on the proper inclination in relation to the equator. This allows the spacecraft to reach its intended destination in space. For example - The space station orbits at an inclination of 51.6 degrees inclined to the equator. So for an ISS mission, the shuttle rolls onto a 51.6 degree inclination for orbit. The roll also gives the shuttle performance advantages.
Indeed --- as the earth rotates in a southeasterly direction. I wouldn't mind seeing a good ole 28.5 degree roll, though. It's been a while as the overwhelming majority of missions in recent years have been to service the ISS.
although another thing is that before the roll, primary ground communication lies with the kennedy space center. the roll repositions the antennas, which allows the handoff to the houston mission control center
I was in 2nd grade when this happened... Too bad the we still launch rockets when we have the technology to not used that proulsion...
