like everyone else thanks for posting this the owners manual sucks big time and didn't give a proper clean procedure in my opinion. but this video made it a lot easier.
Wow! What a beast to clean... but I still want one. I love my FAL but it's not well suited for anything past 400 yards. So I've been eyeing an FNAR. Thanks for posting this. Just the sort of thing a guy needs to know befor dropping a mint on one of these.
great demonstration ... thanks! Just got a used FNAR and the firing pin & spring fell out of the bolt. Gotta figure out what held it in and why it fell out.
Thanks again for posting this....Problem here: I loaded a 175 gr. a lil too hot and punctured a primer and bloated a case. The case got stuck in my chamber, my bolt wouldnt eject the shell, and after much time I finally got the old case out... Currently the rifle will not extract at all. How do i tear the bolt down further?
Depending on mounting solution, the optics may or may not be affected by removal/remounting. A good quality weaver/picatinny style mounting solution with good quality rings should not be affected at all.
Frankly if you have a semi-auto rifle with an optics setup that does not facilitate easy removal/remounting without any shift of zero then you have a crappy cheap setup that is a problem in and of it's self.
Wow why would anybody ever buy one of these? That field strip was agonizing. You could get a DPMS LR-308 that strips just like an AR-15 and is more accurate then this rifle. Is there a special reason why people buy these?
@scarred4life1 Because an AR-15 GI system shoots dirty and fouls far faster. This gun is more like an M1 you fully strip it once a year maybe to clean it, the rest the time you just clean the barrel and call it good.
Great video and thanks for posting it! The only suggestion would have been adding the reassembly, as the order in the FN manual will not work. For all those saying FN made a poor design, do the research. The basis for this rifle has existed since 1967. The BAR sporting rifle is one of the most successful semi auto hunting rifles ever. FN took that design and beefed it up. Adding a magazine feed has bridged the gap nicely for precision vs firepower. Also, this level of cleaning is seldom needed.
Thank you for the excellent video mister! Your instructions emboldened me to finally remove the barrel so I could thread it for a Arredondo muzzle brake. Much easier than I had anticipated. Thanks again.
Very useful video. I really appreciate it. I practically had to watch the video in reverse to put it together. It was interesting having my buddy pause and play the video for me since my hands we covered in solvent.
Jeezus this is a complicated field strip for a L.E.O. / MIL rifle ...
I was considering one for long range work , but after this I think I might save up for the SCAR 17S anding this to an officer and asking him to clean it for the first time is like handing a kid a rubik's cube and forcing him to solve it in 15 seconds at gunpoint...
Excellent VID! A question if you can help out I'd appreciate it: I have what looks like a slight scorch mark on the inside of the forearm piece just under the piston assembly... should I be concerned about that?
I know gswatt35 summed it up completely--but--I cant thank you enough for posting this bro--the FN manual is WEAK!! FN should pay YOU for posting this!! VERY VALUABLE!!----MANY MANY THANKS----Its not that tough once you've seen it done a time or two-but without seeing this vid-theres NO WAY I'd consider doing this on my own---God Bless---
For those people familiar with the Browning BAR this will look somewhat familiar. Me not being one of those people this video was an incredible help. Mine is actually the Winchester SX AR, which is the same gun with a different stock. With good reloads it shoots 3/4" groups at 200 yards. Not many of the usual "black" guns can match that.

I have been delaying tearing down my FNAR because of all the bla bla on the interrnet. Today I took it down while watching your video. It was EASY !!!!! Thanks for taking the time to do this video!!!
Don't let this break down keep you away from the FNAR. The action does not have to be cleaned very ofter, it's a piston driven gun. An AR is a DI gun, meaning the action should be cleaned often. Apple and oranges.
If I had an FNAR I'm sure I would be indebted to you.
I think this worked as FNAR purchase prevention for me though. Sort of like crying babies around young adults without kids yet. Really makes taking down every other gun I've got look like a walk in the park...
Ok-I just got my sxar!-same gun as the fnar identically-but minus the longer top rail and two side rails on the fnar-now-I realize I need to clean this before firing, but do I neec to clean the entire op system or just the barrel?
We appreciate the video on the FNAR, which tells us how clumsy it can be for cleaning. Also, we were concerned about the rifle laying on the scope adjustments until we saw that it was a Bushnell. Personally, I would recommend a type of cleaning bench to prevent damage to the scope adjustments. I spent over a grand for my scope and would never consider doing that, but that's just me.
Thank you 10,000 times over for posting this! The instructions that come with the FNAR sucks. But this video is INVALUABLE as a training aid!
Watching this video almost gave me nightmares about trying to fieldstrip the weapon as it looks very complicated. However, once you have done it a couple of times, it really isn't that hard. Great weapon!
GREAT VIDEO!! This enabled me to clean my gun which I bought used and it was dirty! Its a bit more work but the more you do it, the less time it will take you to it.
I have a fnar and its a really good sniper rifle i shoot 1 3/8 group at 200 yrds i love it its real easy to clean an take apart this is worth the $1500
I have 2 ar's-they're easy to disassemble and clean but they get WAY WAY dirtier after a fraction of the round count! This rifle has a piston driven system which runs so much cleaner! The ar's gas system allows all the filthy gas all over the action/bolt etc. honestly I wish I would've gone straight to this-actually I bought the winchester version1200 vs 1700-same rifle minus a longer top rail and two small side rails-other than that its a ditto...even has built by fn in belgum stamped on it!
AR's-are you referring to eugene stoners ar15 or are you referencing to assult rifles in general...ak's-totally possible-on a true blue AR-15--I find that hard to beleive... unless you talking about a piston driven ar...then you run into broken gas keys(i know they also make one peice bolts-but even those can be broken under strenuous use...even then-10,000 rounds...do you have any references on this claim...-do you own any AR15's?
Good video. I own this rifle as well and it is a bit tricky to disassemble. A lot more difficult than my AR15, that's for sure. Thanks for the vid. really helped.
Mine shoots about 1 moa with handloads. Meaning I could probably put all shots into a 6-7 inch circle at 600 yards. I've never shot it past 300 though. All shots at 300 were in a 5 inch circle, and I'm not that great of a shot. Shooting past 300 gets a lot harder. All shots at 100 yards are less than an inch.
@testbooster You can get out to 800 yards, that's it for the best preformance range anyways. I'm sure it's possible to go further, but 800 yards is definately all she wrote in my opinion.
I clean mine without taking it all appart. I take of the front guard and thats it. Get a toothbrush u brush the bolt... no need to take it apart, although i might do it once a year.
Yes, I put a years worth of rounds about 1000 down the barrel. I do a general cleaning but just toobrushed and lubed the bolt. Finaly took it out and did a total cleaning of the bolt. My FNAR has NEVER JAMMED.

I would love to know FN's thinking behind the components, and why it is so difficult to take down. In all my years in military firearms, I have never seen anything so complicated, with the sleeves, pins, etc.
What the fuck were they smoking when designing this?

not to be a dick or anything, but would you not remove the optics first instead of balancing the rifle on it?
TargornXelos 4 months ago
@TargornXelos
I don't think you are a dick at all! just ignorant of high quality firearm components.
If the optics could be affected that easily, then they would be completely useless in
the real world. Besides, removing the optics would require a re-sighting.

The BAR and FNAR are the identical action. The difference is in the weight of the barrel.
Oh, and the FNAR is a "black" rifle ...
