of Asians there, and they have a rocky history with whites too, so ... Plus tons of Hollywood movies have been shot there too, so there's a big influence there as well.

When I was growing up, black meant Black-American. The possibility of a mixed race dude, who's dad was African and grew up on a pacific island raised by white people was way off the radar.
Who knew such a person would ever come to exist? Of course it was theoretically possible.

The thinking was, "He's black, so he's anti-establishment like me, so I'll vote for him."
I nearly voted for him for the same reason. But I knew from closely inspecting his words, that he wasn't really anti-establishment.

And that I, growing up as a white kid in the 48 states, had more exposure to African-American cultural influences than he did.

No you drew conclusions based off what you know of where and how he was raised. You said you're more black then him because he's clean-cut and probably doesnt know black slang. His dad is from Kenya, Africa it doesnt get much blacker than that. There's more to being black than the stereotypical way we act. Its how our skin color has its own reputation that precedes us as individuals. Thats something you have to experience and I have no doubt he did, especially going to Harvard, but even before.

When I was growing up, black meant Black-American. The possibility of a mixed race dude, who's dad was African and grew up on a pacific island raised by white people was way off the radar.
Who knew such a person would ever come to exist? Of course it was theoretically possible.
But we can all agree, it's a very rare upbringing. It's not just exotic, it's extremely exotic.

And that's my point. His upbringing is something that cant be taught. A reporter said after his Inauguration that he has the ability to to sympathize yet simultaneously remain objective enough to see the big picture. I believe that comes from his unique upbringing and what helps make him a great choice as leader. Add to that his education and his relative newness to politics (less time to be tainted by it) you have a possible situation where the stars have aligned for us. Its crazy.
