Hitler stopped the Wehrmacht units for three days, as they needed a rest, but he unleashed the Luftwaffe which he wanted to favour, and gave orders to destroy all the allied forces in the "pocket". For the French and British at Dunkirk, this was not a truce at all (I know this from 1st hand information!).
..and little did they know, that by stopping and not follow suit, and by not obliterating the British Army while they had a chance to do so, they would lose the war a few years later. Another early strategic mistake by Herr H. (luckily) Correct me if I'm wrong! :)
Germany has not used the victory - fortunately for humanity!

Hitler halted his troops and held them for three days. Hitler spared the British in hopes that he could still reach peace with England.

No. There is absolutely no evidence to support this legend. In fact, the order was to destroy entirely ("vernichten") the troops trapped in Dunkirk.

Yes there is evidence that Hitler stopped his troops for three days. But there is no evidence to why he did it...

I'd call that a tactical mistake, but otherwise I agree.
