If I may, they're not being called sell outs because their sound changed, or they're popular. They're being called sellouts by most people because Alex brought in outside writers on the album. As in, he wrote the guitar himself, a rough copy of the lyrics, and then he REwrote the lyrics, and the rest of the stuff, with ghostwriters.

Quite obviously, they use the same chord progression as lots of songs out there... but you have to keep in mind how many songs are out there in the world. There's gonna be songs with the same chords...

In all honesty, it's not the chord progression that matters. It's what the band DOES with that chord progression that makes a song unique.
