I like their version, they are doing this in tribute to Brian and the Beach Boys. It isn't fair to compare the greatness of the original with the tribute. stop being haters enjoy the music or gtfo
@M3town3 well if we are going to quote brian, you should check out dennis's video a time to live in dreams, where Brian calls him a genius. clubber perhaps at the start but he got better.
@denniswilsonfan Phil Spector already taught me how to see which people who are talented... Nobody in the Beach Boys except Brian are very alented at all.
@Clanhelius Spector said recently that Brian never was on the same level as him and that the Beach Boys best record Good Vibrations is a edit record with some weird instrument. "It's not a great record, it's an edit record" he said.
I don't think its possible to make a better version of a Beach Boys song, and 100% of artists know this is true when covering a Brian Wilson classic. So what you have to do is put your own twist or take on the song and do the best you can.
Great cover. Love the sound of the guitar at the beginning. Obviously it isn't as definitive as the Pet Sounds/Beach Boys version but it isn't trying to be, it's a great band paying tribute to a great band.
i think this is a somewhat successful update of the song, i mean it's sonic youth can you really expect sonic perfectionism from what is a basically a noise rock band
They didn't understand the harmonic subtilities of the original. And the vocal/instrumental performance is poor. This song is a precious, fragile, light, thin crystal, finely embroidered, you must use carefully !
An example of the way you can take a masterpiece and turn it to banality. When you do a cover, even if you want to change the original material completely, you have to deeply understand the source, and then bring your interpretation. This is obviously not the case here.
I love the Beach Boys, I checked this out because I love them and am much less familiar with Sonic Youth.
But even I can tell they were going for something different, here. They weren't just trying to re-record the original. I think they did a pretty nice job.
@mariechristine100 I'd have to strongly disagree here. I think Sonic Youth DID understand the tenderness of the song, and I think their arrangement very much retained the "fragility" of the original. It could definitely have done without the background vocals, and it could be a little more polished, but frankly I was amazed at how seemingly easy the transition is to quite a beautiful rock song.
Sorry guys, you cant improve perfection.

@denniswilsonfan They deserver "BETtER" covers than this freaky. Besides Dennis Wilson is just a clubber. He's not an... artist. Brian's own words.

@M3town3 My senile grandfather once went on record as saying that Phil Spector dreamed of being as talented as him.

The original is a masterpiece of epic proportions. The lead vocals here are horrible.

Black Francis did a nice cover of this as "Hang on to your Ego" With original BW lyrics. He is a genius, you know, Brian Wilson is.
