Wow! This was actually culled from an REM episode of 120 Minutes that I remember watching back in the late 90's. Dave Holmes hosted it, and fans mailed in which REM videos they wanted to see. I never saw this video until that show. (It was left off of Succumbs!) I ended up saving the video, but not the whole show. If someone has the whole show, I will happily trade you another 120 episode!
@Plarocks I read somewhere that the band was reportedly not too thrilled that this was being shown on 120 Minutes. They never wanted it to see the light of day ever again.
@Shaden0040 No, it isn't that is a different song. "Wolves, Lower" and "Gardening at Night" are two distinct separate songs. Maybe it was mis-labeled.
crimsonwhitw. I'm from England, THis was a bad period, Wham! Duran Duran etc utter nonsense. 82 I was 9 but I did discover R.E,M, in 1985 thnks to Billy Bragg.
@DavidLCarcoba That's exactly how I came to REM. My dad always played Automatic and OOT when I was a little kid, and ever since I heard those albums, I've been a fan. It was just in the last few years that I started listening to their old stuff, which I think I like even more
@tquasa I think it's the case for many people: from mainstream to underground, from Warner to I.R.S. It's shock to see there're another 6 albums or so before the two great works you mention. The feeling of seeing the tip of the iceberg....
I remember seeing them at the 9:30 club pre Police tour..when Stipe still had long hair...one of the first bands I sung along with phonetically...an amazing band...
@ToulacAxeHand It was off their very 1st album, I think before they even signed on to IRS. Murmur was their debut on IRS I believe in 1983-84. It is a great album if you are an R.E.M. fan. I think the oldest stuff is the best, just like U2 they get shittier as time goes on I feel.
I can remember wanting to watch this video for THEE longest time, and ever since I got to have it played on VH1 Classic a few years ago, I can't stop watching it. The song/video is just THAT good.
@crimsonwhite1 - and in 1982 the only people who knew anything about REM were people who lived in Georgia, College Radio stations, and record store assistant managers. Its most amazing that, like the Velvet Underground before them, not too many people bought their albums, but most of those who did went out and started their own bands...
They remain one of the most important things to happen to the 80's...
they were just different from the top bands. yes. so were many others, joy division, cure, bauhaus, siouxie.... 70's prog bands.... they are all different from those pop song makers. that doesnt make them ahead. From that reason, Mozart is 6 bilion years ahead of olivia newton john.
@crimsonwhite1 REM is obviously superior to this lot. Regrettably, compare any song on this list to a current Top 10. {Of course, the current top 10 will only last for 10 seconds.)
this fine video captures the mystery of early r.e.m., one of the most interesting musical offers ever from the united states of america. at 3:14 michael does a dance move which is very similar to pretty mary's in the virgin suicides. adolescent wonderment sitting still inside the heart
Wow! I've been wanting to see this again for about 20 years! YouTube, I love you! As a side note, Stipe always claimed he didn't lip sync in any videos until "Losing My Religion". Guess he forgot about this one. Or maybe that's why this hasn't been on any video collection...still one of my faves, regardless!
I lived in Winston-Salem NC when they and Mitch Easter recorded this in his parents basement, and a few copies got out, i wish i hadnt worn mine out, believe me when I tell you there was nothing like this being played anywhere in 1980 and to think it happened in my 1/2 hometown! Chronic Town was and is brilliant
fuck yes!!! THANK GOD!! someone put this video up again...its like why the fuck was it taken down in the first place and finnally someone made my wish come true and now i wont take it for granted im going to download it and so should you before we dont have it again... yes im lame..
I consider this one of the quintessential, foundational songs of 80's alternative music. Chronic Town was a game changer.

I miss 120 Minutes...so long ago. And Michael Stipes hair. But it's all good, R.E.M. still on my top 5 list of best bands of all time.

this song is about being gay and the fear of getting caught. Also it handles with homophobia.

Yes, which is why I rule.

wow - have listened to this song my whole live, never seen the vid (they got youtube on the interweb now!!)
these guys came out of the gate hot as hell, and for the most part, just got better - REM can do no wrong (well, except the monster experiment)

Is it just me
or does Michael Stipe kinda look like Robert Smith with his hair like that?

please dont confuse the great REM with that loser band the cure.
eeayt 3 years ago
whoa-whoa, man!!
both are greats in the creation of alternative rock
Even if you don't like em, you gotta respect the Cure!!
ialsoRAPEemos 3 years ago 4
This comment has received too many negative votes show
bah. i guess they influenced current emo crap.
eeayt 3 years ago
Maybe in their look
But the Cure didn't cut themselves
imo, the Cure are NOTHING like emo
Emo also ripped off punk rock, and call themselves "pop-punk"
That doesn't mean the Ramones are emo

to put things in perspective. here's the u.s. top 10 hits for the weekend of September 10, 1982:
1. PHYSICAL, Olivia Newton-John
2. EYE OF THE TIGER, Survivor
3. I LOVE ROCK 'N' ROLL, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
4. EBONY AND IVORY, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
5. CENTERFOLD, The J. Geils Band
Now, you see why r*e*m was sp far ahead of their time.
